Subject: [NJHUNTER] Levi Williamson
Date: Sun, 20 May 2007 12:57:29 EDT

Dear Richard,
If you are interested, I have another Williamson to add to your
database. Levi Williamson was a son of Adam Williamson and Eleanor Williamson. He
was born ca. 1821 and died 28 July 1888. He was married on 18 Sept 1851 to
Rebecca Shearman (Sherman), daughter of John Sherman( Shearman) and Elizabeth
Rittenhouse.
She died in 1853 or 1854, and I can not find any indication that he ever
married again.
They are both buried in Rosemont Cemetery right next to John and
Elizabeth Sherman.
He is shown in the 1850 census living with Adam and Eleanor, and Adam
Williamson, farmer, Delaware Township is listed as his father on the record of
marriage for Levi and Rebecca obtained from the archives in Trenton.

The following article was taken from the March, 1977, issue of the QUARTERLY, Whole No. 97, p 1890:

"In the June 1959 issue of the QUARTERLY (Vol. VII, No. 2, Whole No. 26), we devoted several pages to the history of the descendants of Solomon Sparks, Jr. (died 1817) and his wife, Charity, of Wilkes County, North Carolina. A son of Solomon Sparks, Jr., was George Sparks (born ca. 1788) who married Delila - - - - about 1806 and moved to Randolph County, Indiana, about 1830. He moved to Wells County, Indiana, about 1836 and died there in 1843.

One of the sons of George and Delila Sparks was Abel Sparks who was born in Wilkes County, North
Carolina, about 1828; he married Elizabeth Douglass in Wells County, Indiana, on May 4, 1850. This is the only information that we had regarding Abel Sparks when the above mentioned article appeared. Mrs. Bertha J. Davis, 1700 Harrison Blvd., Boise, Idaho (83702) has learned a little more about him, but hopes that someone reading this may be able to report even further.

When the 1850 census was taken of Huntington County Indiana, the family of Abel Sparks was listed as
consisting of himself (aged 22, and his wife, Elizabeth, aged 19. Elizabeth's birth place was given as
Pennsylvania. Abel's mother, Delila Sparks (aged 62, born in North Carolina), was living with him, as was his sister, Mary Sparks (aged 16, born in Indiana).

According to family records found by Mrs. Davis, Abel and Elizabeth (Douglass) Sparks had a daughter, Mary Sparks, who was born on April 16, 1851, in Bluffton, Wells County, Indiana. It is not known whether there were other children.

Sometime in the 1850's, after the birth of Mary, Abel Sparks, with his wife and daughter, joined a wagon train going to Oregon. Abel Sparks died enroute - - where or when is not known. It is known that his wife married again, but it is not known to whom or when.

On May 12, 1869, Mary Sparks, daughter of Abel and Elizabeth (Douglass) Sparks, was married to John
Joseph Brown, son of Charles Arthur Brown. Their first two children, names and dates unknown, were born in Cottage Grove, Lane County, Oregon. Mary and John later moved to Gilliam County, Oregon, where a son, Charles Arthur Brown, was born on March 11, 1876, in Rock Creek. Charles Arthur Brown was married on December 1, 1901, in Condon, Gilliam County, Oregon, to Missouri Pearl Fitzwater.

Mary (Sparks) Brown died in Condon, Gilliam County, Oregon, on August 29, 1931. Her son, Charles Arthur Brown, died on September 12, 1960, in Pleasant Valley, Baker County, Oregon, and his wife, Missouri Pearl (Fitzwater) Brown, died on February 9, 1969, in Oak Harbor, Island County, Washington."

Also see SQ p. 3706.

See SQ p. 5289:

Abel Sparks was born in May 1827. He was married to Elizabeth Douglas on May 4, 1850, in Wells
County, Indiana. A great-granddaughter of Abel Sparks (Doris Cornett [Brown[ Macomber), reported
many years ago that early in 1852 Abel Sparks and his wife, Elizabeth, with their infant daughter, Mary
Sparks, joined a wagon train to Oregon. Most of Elizabeth's family, including her parents, were members
of this train. Abel Sparks died of cholera somewhere along the Platte River on June 13, 1852. Elizabeth
and her daughter continued with the train and settled with her relatives in Lane County, Oregon. There, on
May 23, 1854, she was married (2nd) to James Richard Phillips.

[JS NOTE: See THE SPARKS QUARTERLY, December 1958, Whole No. 24, pp. 337-337 for the following article which was later corrected in the June 1987 issue of the QUARTERLY at pp. 3061-3084, reproduced below. This Abel Sparks, said in the following article to be the son of Solomon and (Sarah -----] Sparks, was actually their grandson and the son of Joseph Sparks.]

DEATH TAKES GEORGE WILLIAM WAGNER

GREAT-GRANDSON OF ABEL SPARKS

"It is with deep regret that we report the death of George William Wagner, a devoted member of The Sparks Family Association since 1955. Mr. Wagner died of a heart attack at his home in Conrad, Montana, on August 31, 1958. He was eighty-three years old at the time of his death.

Born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on September 18, 1874, Mr. Wagner moved with his parents to a farm near Blue Earth, Minnesota, where he attended school. They later farmed near Guckeen, Minnesota. He married Minnie Gertrude Brownlee, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Gordon) Brownlee, in December, 1902, and he and his wife came to Montana in 1910, homesteading twenty-eight miles east of Conrad. He lived there until he retired in 1942. Mrs. Wagner died in 1956. He is survived by four daughters: Mrs. George (Gertrude) Kovatch of Kellogg, Idaho; Mrs. Olive Harris of Conrad; Mrs. A. J. (Marian) Kovatch of Conrad; and Mrs. Mae Bales of Tillamook, Oregon.

Mr. Wagner was connected with the Sparks family through his paternal grandmother, Mary (Sparks) Wagner, daughter of Abel and Sarah Sparks. Abel Sparks, Mr. Wagner?s great-grandfather, was the son of Solomon and Sarah Sparks of Surry County, North Carolina [Note: later found incorrect; see top of page]. (See page 98 of the December, 1955, issue of The Sparks Quarterly, Whole No. 12.)

Mr. Wagner owned the family Bible in which was recorded the birth of Abel Sparks, along with that of his wife and children. Following is a transcription of this record:

Abel Sparks was born Jan. 8th, 1767
Sarah Sparks was born May, 1767
Children:
Geo. Sparks, born Oct. 14th, 1800
Hannah Sparks, born May 9th, 1802
Frances Sparkes, born Oct. 27th, 1803
Elizabeth Sparkes, born April 13th, 1805
Ann Sparkes, born June 7th, 1808
Martha Sparkes, born April 1st, 1811
Soloman Sparkes, born Sept. 5th, 1812
John Sparkes, born March 25th, 1814
Mary Sparks, born October 25th, 1815
Sarah Sparks, born Sept. 13th, 1817
Abraham Sparks, born July 27th, 1821
Rebecca Sparkes, born Dec. 27th, 1825
Jane Sparks, born July 19th, 1827

Relatively little has been learned regarding the life of Abel Sparks. He may have been married twice, for on the 1800 census of Wilkes County, North Carolina, he was listed with five children, two boys and three girls, all under ten years of age. Since the Bible record gives no children born before 1800, it would seem probable that they were children by an earlier wife. It is possible, of course, that these five children were not his own and were merely living in his household when the 1800 census was taken. Another problem exists regarding the birth date of Sarah, wife of Abel. If she was born in 1767, as the Bible record indicates, she would have been thirty-three years of age when her first child, George, was born in 1800, and sixty years old when her daughter, Jane, was born in 1827. Although it is not impossible for a woman of sixty to bear a child, it is very unusual - - so unusual that, if she was the mother of all the children named, she must have been born several years after 1767.

Several records have been found in Wilkes County, North Carolina, pertaining to Abel Sparks. The earliest of these is a tax record dated 1800 on which he was taxed for 60 acres of land. A letter of attorney dated July 31, 1801, to Abel Sparks from his brotiers and sisters is also on file in Wilkes County; this appears to have involved the settlement of the estate of Abel?s father. Although it is evident that Abel Sparks owned land in Wilkes County by 1800, the only deed pertaining to his purchase of land is dated December 12, 1801. It records the purchase by Abel Sparks from Humphrey Cockerham, both of Wilkes County, for 100 pounds, a tract of 150 acres described as follows: ?a certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County of Wilkes beginning on the East fork of Swan Creke on Timothy Sisks line, running with the sd line South to a stake in James Foxes line, then East running with sd line to a white oak on the County ithe, thence North with the County to the Long Glade Creek, thence running down sd crick with the various courses of the stream to the beginning.? The witnesses to this deed were Mordecoi Samuel and James Dowell; it was recorded in the Wilkes County courthouse in February, 1805.

In 1805, Abel Sparks was taxed for 100 acres of land in Wilkes County. The last record pertaining to him in the county states that he was chosen to serve on a jury on August 5, 1807.

By 1812 Abel Sparks had moved to Tennessee, but in what section he settled is not known. Sometime between 1815 and 1820 he moved to Illinois, settling in Bond County, for he and his family were listed on the 1820 census of that county as follows:
Abel Sparks
1 male over 21 years
3 males under 21 years
7 free white females

No record has been found thus far to reveal when or where Abel and Sarah Sparks died. Some members of the family moved to Grant, Wisconsin, in later years. A marrlage is recorded in Bond County, Illinois, for one of Abel Sparks? children: on October 10, 1822, Fanny (Frances) Sparks married Francis Kirkpatrick. Of the other children, it is known that Elizabeth married a Jones, Sarah married William Dennis, and Rebecca married William Andrews.

Mary Sparks, daughter of Abel, was Mr. Wagner?s grandmother. She was born while her parents were living in Tennessee, and died on May 10, 1879, in Hampton, Franklin County, Iowa. She was married twice, her first husband being Jacob Wagner, who was born in Palatine, New York, August 24, 1807. He was a farmer living in Grant County, Wisconsin, when, about 1844, he was killed by a neighbor who struck him on the head with a fence post. It was winter and there was lots of snow; Jacob Wagner had taken down this man?s fence in order to take a shortcut home. The children of Jacob and Mary (Sparks) Wagner were as follows:

(1) Elizabeth Wagner, born Jan. 22, 1832, died Mar. 17, 1923; married Samuel Wanamaker.
(2) George Wagner, born May 1, 1833, died Mar. 9, 1863; never married.
(3) Sarah Jane Wagner, born May 22, 1834; married Jake Wire.
(4) Jesse William Wagner, born June 28, 1835; died June 1, 1922; never married.
(5) Emdine Catherine Wagner, born Jan. 9, 1837, died Feb. 1, 1929; married Scott Vincent.
(6) Solomon Wagner, born Aug. 20, 1838, died Jan. 20, 1924; he was married five times. His first wife?s maiden name was Sullivan; he married 2nd Mrs. Pricella Ice Ward. Solomon is buried at Stockton, California.
(7) Jasper Newton Wagner, born Nov. 4, 1839; never married; he was lost in a storm on a wagon train going West.
(8) Jacob Harrison Wagner, born Feb. 28, 1841; died Feb. 25, 1929; married Margaret Eirning.

Mary (Sparks] Wagner married, as her second husband, Joseph Brown who was born about 1810 and died about 1860. He was a Quaker, born in Pennsylvania, but lived in Grant
County, Wisconsin. They had the following children:

(1) Apame Ann Brown, born March 25, 1845; died May, 1909; married Bentley Wheeler.
(2) Minerva Brown, born Nov. 14, 1846; died June, 1921; married Charles Humphrey.
(3) John Brown, born July 23, 1848; died Aug. 24, 1920; married Mary Ann Gullickson.
[4) Dave Brown, born Aug. 20, 1850; died Feb., 1914; married Evelyn Medley.
(5) Marques De Lafayette (Mark) Brown, born June 14, 1852; died Dec. 26, 1899; married Agnes Nowell.
(6) Pheobe Brown, born July 9, 1854; died June 4, 1855.
(7) Mary Idell Brown, born Feb. 21, 1858; died Dec. 18, 1933; married Dr. John Pride.

The above information on Mary (Sparks) Wagner Brown has been supplied by Mr. Wagner?s daughter, Mrs. Olive M. W. Harris, who has been an active supporter of the Association for the past several years.

Should anyone have further information on Abel Sparks or his descendants, your editor would be very pleased to hear from him."

See THE SPARKS QUARTERLY, June 1987, pp. 3069-3084:

TWO MEN NAMED ABEL SPARKS
(continued:)

ABEL SPARKS, THE YOUNGER
SON OF JOSEPH SPARKS

"When the younger Abel Sparks died in 1872, his age, as given on his tombstone, was 94. When his wife, Sarah Sparks, died in 1853, her age was given as 74. If these ages at the times of their deaths are correct, Abel was born in 1778 (possibly 1777 or 1779) and Sarah, his wife, was born in 1779 (possibly 1778 or 1780). Census records confirm the near correctness of these dates.

As noted earlier in this article, we are quite certain that this Abel Sparks, whom we have called "the Younger" in order to distinguish him from his uncle, Abel Sparks, the Elder, was a son of Joseph Sparks, a biographical sketch of whom appears on pages 3057-60 of the present issue of the QUARTERLY. We believe this in part because the age of Abel Sparks, the Younger matches the age of a son of Joseph Sparks enumerated on the 1800 census of Surry County, North Carolina. No other man named Sparks living in Surry or Wilkes Counties of North Carolina had a son born in or about 1778 whom we cannot otherwise account for.

"Abel and Sarah Sparks were married in Surry or Wilkes County, North Carolina, about 1799. While we have found no record of their marriage, there can be little doubt but that Sarah?s maiden name was Cochran. Descendants have always believed that this was her name. (Cochran was spelled in a variety of ways in the Wilkes County records, including "Cockerham.") We believe that it is significant that on December 12, 1801, Abel Sparks purchased a tract of 150 acres of land in Wilkes County, North Carolina, from Humphrey Cochran. (Deed Book E, p. 703) While in this deed, Humphrey?s name was spelled "Cockerham," his name appears in some Wilkes County records as Cochran (also Cockran). A daughter of Abel and Sarah (Cochran) Sparks, Frances Sparks, who married Francis Creswell Kirkpatrick, named her first son James Cochran. Kirkpatrick. This may suggest that Sarah?s father was named James Cochran, though no one of that name has been found in Wilkes County records.

"In the QUARTERLY of December 1958 (Whole No. 24, p. 337) we published a record of the children of Abel and Sarah (Cochran) Sparks from a family Bible then owned by the family of George William Wagner (who died in 1955). George William Wagner descended from a daughter of Abel and Sarah named Mary. This record pertains to Abel Sparks, the Younger, although at the time (1958) that we published the record we did not realize that there were two different men named Abel Sparks living in the Surry-Wilkes Counties area in the 1790s and early 1800s. In transcribing this Bible record for the QUARTERLY from a hand-copied sheet sent by a member of the Wagner family, we noted that the dates of birth given for Abel and Sarah Sparks (both being 1767) seemed strange in relationship to the dates of birth of their thirteen children; if born in 1767, both Abel and Sarah would have been 33 years old when their first child was born in 1800, and both would have been 60 years old when their last child was born in 1827. Rarely, if ever, has a woman borne a child at the age of 60.

We assumed in the 1958 article that this was the same Abel Sparks known to have been a son of Solomon and Sarah, as noted earlier. Since that time, however, evidence has been found to prove that the birth date (1767) given for the younger Abel Sparks and his wife Sarah was wrong (see the records given above for their ages at their deaths appearing on their tombstones). Rather than being a son of Solomon and Sarah Sparks, Abel Sparks (whom we call "the Younger? here" was a grandson of Solomon and Sarah.

Since the publication of the 1958 article, we have obtained a photostatic copy of the family record in the Wagner Bible. From this it is clear that the names and dates of birth of Abel and Sarah Sparks, along with those of their thirteen children, were all written in the same hand and at the same time, that is, this record was copied from an earlier record. Perhaps it was taken from a family Bible once belonging to Abel Sparks, himself. What is especially interesting is the fact that the birth dates of Abel and Sarah were written orginally in the Wagner Bible as follows:

"Abel Sparkes was born january 8th Anno Domini 1789
Sarah Sparkes was born May 1th Anno Domini 1789."

"At a later date, in a different hand, the following was written in the Wagner Bible record above the entry for the birth of Abel Sparks: "corrected Born 1767" and above the entry for Sarah Sparkes was written simply "1767." Why was this correction made? We can speculate that someone, at some point, must have realized that if Abel and Sarah had been born in 1789, as originally written in the Wagner Bible, they would have been only 11 years old in 1800 when their first child was born. While the date "1789" was obviously wrong, subsequent events (e.g. their ages given on census records and their ages at death on their tombstones, as well as the fact that no woman could bear a child at age 60) prove that "1767" was likewise wrong.

"Where did the date "1767" come from? Since this seems to be very nearly the date of birth of the elder Abel Sparks (son of Solomon and Sarah), we wonder whether the person who made the change in the Wagner Bible record may have had access to the record of the births of the children of Solomon and Sarah Sparks and assumed, as did we in 1958, that there had been but one Abel Sparks.

"In our earlier discussion of the elder Abel Sparks, reference was made to the 1800 entry in the Wilkes County Court Minutes for an Abel Sparks being one of a group of men charged with laying out a road "from Brooks road at Surry County line into the road that leads down the Yadkin on the south side." While we cannot be certain, we think it probable that this referred to the younger Abel Sparks. (It is interesting that in this list of men charged with building this road, the name of Humphrey Cockerham (or Cochran) immediately precedes that of Abel Sparks.)

"It was on December 12, 1801, that Abel Spanks purchased from Humphrey Cockenham (or Cochran) a tract of land in Wilkes County consisting of 150 acres. (Book E, p. 703) Both Humphrey Cockerham and Abel Sparks were identified in the deed as residents of Wilkes County. Abel Sparks paid Cockerham "One Hundred Pounds Courantcy." The tract was described in the deed as follows:
"... lying and being in the County of Wilkes beginning on the East fork of Swan Creke on Timothy Sisks line running with the sd line South to a stake in James Foxes line then East running with sd line to a white oak on the County line thence North with the County to the Long Glade Creek thence running down sd crick with the various Courses of the stream to the beginning." The witnesses to this deed were Mordecoi Samuel and James Dowell. Though signed on December 12, 1801, this deed was not recorded in the Wilkes County Courthouse until February 1805.

"Unfortunately, no tax lists are available for Wilkes County between 1800 and 1805. Abel Sparks was taxed for 100 acres of land in Captain John Martin?s District in Wilkes County in 1805. Since the elder Abel Sparks had been in Georgia for at least two years when this tax list was prepared, we have no doubt that this refers to Abel Sparks, the Younger.

"While the Wagner Bible record quoted earlier regarding the family of Abel and Sarah (Cochran) Spanks was obviously in error regarding the dates of birth of both Abel and Sarah, the record of the births of their children seems to be accurate, according to descendants. This record reads as follows:

1. George Sparkes, born October 14, 1800
2. Hannah Sparkes, born May 9, 1802
3. Frances Sparkes, born Octobr 27, 1803
4. Elizabeth Sparkes, born April 13, 1805
5. Ann Sparkes, bonn June 7, 1808
6. Martha Sparkes, born April 1, 1811
7. Solomon Sparkes, born September 5, 1812
8. John Sparkes, born March 25, 1814
9. Mary Sparkes, born October 25, 1815
10. Sarah Spankes, born September 13, 1817
11. Abraham Sparkes, born July 27, 1821
12. Rebecca Sparkes, born December 27, 1825
13. Jane Sparkes, born July 19, 1827

"Our last record of Abel Sparks, the Younger that we have found in North Carolina is dated 1807. The Wilkes County court records indicate that Abel served on a jury there on August 5, 1807. He again served on a jury in Wilkes County on September 21, 1807. (See the Winter 1982 issue of the quarterly publication of the Wilkes Genealogical Society, Vol. 16, No. 4, p. 10.)

"Abel Sparks, the Younger moved with his family to Tennessee sometime after September 1807, where they remained until at least 1815. He was taxed in Franklin County, Tennessee, in 1812. (See Index to Early Tennessee Tax Records by Byron & Barbara Sistler, published in Evanston, IL in 1977.) By 1820, however, Abel Sparks had again moved his family, this time to the new state of Illinois, settling in Bond County according to the federal census of that year. Abel Sparks did not appear on the 1830 census of Illinois, however, because by that time he had taken his family to Crawford County, Missouri. In fact, the move to Missouri probably came no later than the summer of 1827 because Abel?s youngest daughter, Jane, who was born July 19, 1827, gave her place of birth in later years as Missouri.

"Abel Sparks, the Younger made one more major move in his lifetime -- sometime before 1840. In this instance, however, he may have simply accompanied a son in his attempt to better himself. Abel?s son John was living in Grant County, Wisconsin Territory, when the 1840 census was taken, while his son George was in Iowa County of Wisconsin Territory. From the enumeration of the household of George Sparks on the 1840 census, it appears that his parents were then living with him.

"When the 1850 census was taken of Grant County, Wisconsin, Abel and Sarah Sparks were listed (on November 2, 1850) as living with their son Solomon Sparks, near the town of Lima. (The 1850 federal census was the first to list each member of each household by name.) Solomon Sparks, son of Abel and Sarah, was identified as a farmer, 40 years old, with real estate valued at $1,200. His place of birth was given as Tennessee. Abel and Sarah, both shown as born in North Carolina, were listed as 70 years of age. Also listed in the same household of Solomon Sparks (who never married) was 23-year old Lucinda Sparks (thus born about 1827) whose place of birth was given as Missouri. We believe that this was intended for Jane Sparks (born July 19, 1827), the youngest daughter of Abel and Sarah Sparks--perhaps her middle name was Lucinda, or the census taker may simply have misunderstood her name. Also living in the household of Solomon Sparks were three males who were probably hired men or boarders. They were: William Wagner, age 15, laborer; Jesse Crow, age 27, miner; and Jasper Wilkerl, age 20, laborer. (JS Note: See SQ p. 2608 for this census.)

"In 1853, Sarah (Cochran) Sparks, wife of Abel, died. She was buried in Grant County, Wisconsin, about one mile south of the hamlet called Arthur. Located on land owned by a McReynolds family today, the cemetery is called the McReynolds Cemetery. (Two daughters of Abel and Sarah Sparks married men named McReynolds, Nancy and Jane.) The inscription on Sarah?s tombstone reads:"Sarah, wife of Abel Sparks, Died August 12, 1853, Aged 74 years."

"When the 1860 census was taken, Abel Sparks, 82 years old, was again listed by the census taker as living with his bachelor son, Solomon Sparks, in Grant County, Wisconsin. The census taker, however, mistakenly wrote his name as "Abraham"; in the column for occupation, he wrote "Gentleman." In 1870, Abel Sparks was again listed by the census taker as living with his son Solomon; he was now 92, and under occupation this time the census taker wrote "keeping house."

"According to the inscription on his tombstone in the Mc Reynolds Cemetery, Abel Sparks died on December 27, 1872, at the age of 94. He was buried beside his wife, Sarah.

"When Solomon Sparks, son of Abel and Sarah (Cochran) Sparks, died in 1880 without issue and without leaving a will, his brother, Abraham Sparks, requested the county probate judge to appoint Thomas Watson as administrator of the estate. A man named George Clementson was directed to identify the heirs of Solomon Sparks. His report contains helpful data regarding the descendants of Abel and Sarah, as will be noted below." Tobias Bright was the eldest child of Albertus and Patience (Hopkins) Bright. Neither the date nor place of his birth is known, but he was probably born in Virginia, for Albertus was there between the years 1755 and 1777, and as Tobias received a grant of land from Governor Moultrie of South Carolina in 1785 (a month earlier than his father) he was evidently of age then, so must have been born in the early 1760's. He married Jane Ford, who it seems certain was the daughter of John Ford, Sr. The record of their marriage has not been found but their eldest child was born in 1787. Tobias and Jane (Ford) Bright moved from South Carolina to Kentucky sometime betweenm August 1789 and 1791, the birth date of their son John W. Ford. They first lived in Fayette and Montgomery counties, later settling in Shelby County on a farm west and nearly opposite that of Albertus Bright.

Tobias died 13 September 1801, and Jane 17 March, 1817. They were buried in the grove on the home farm, but when the Eminence Cemetery was opened, they were moved to the family lot there.

HISTORY OF THE MAMMOTH CAVE. As told to me by Mrs. Nancy Maria Barnhill Whitson my Mother in law. (by Marie T Jentzech Whitson; wife of Edward Whitson, son of James Edward Whitson and Nancy Maria Barnhill) Healdsburg, California. April 18, 1922.

"Sometime before the Southern war, just exactly when I can not tell, There were two Brothers by the name of McClane. They came from Europe some where and setteled in Kentuckey, and became very wealthy in real-estate, and I have heard from one of there Granddaughters, that they owned nearly one half of the State of Kentucky. This might have been exagurated, never the less they owned much very much.

As the snake were rather plentiful and dangerious in Kentuckey it was in the Winter time when men dug for Saltpeter, and on one of these ocasions these two McClane Bros. punched a hole into the side of a Hill. When they discovered that it was a large cavity, they made investigations and by letting themselves down in the cave by a rope, they discovered that it was a very large Cave, and found many curiosities on there first visit into the Cave, among which was an Indian woman who sat in a stone arm chair - or a stone that was shaped thus. With her knitting basket on her arm and her needle work in her hands, On close inspection they found that she was dead and petrefide, the two brothers were so amaised over it, that they desided to take the Indian woman out of the Cave and put her on Exebition, and in doing so they were much disapointed when they saw this woman fall to pieces as soon as she got into the open fresh air. As time went on many investigating parties were taken into the Cave, as it was on the land owned by the McClane Bros. They found so many Indian relics and curiosities, that they were assured that at some time the Cave must have been the home of a prominent Indian Chief - There was a large apartment like a dineing room in the center of which was a large stone table, around it were stone chairs just like the one the woman had died in, at the head of the table was a chair somewhat larger than the rest, as though it was a Chief! Chair, from the ceiling hung earth shaped like icidles and various ornaments adorned the walls. There was a river in the Cave with very clear water and in it were fishes without eyes, and many other things I have now forgotten as time rolled on. They found the Cave to be about five miles long and had several enterences. On one accasion while a party of explorers were in the Cave, One of the McClane Bros. Strayed away from the rest of the party and got lost. It tuck them three days to find him, he was almost dead from exposure and hunger when they found him perfectly nude haveing burned up one piece of clothing after another after his torch had burned out. Now all this happened and much more up to fifty years before the Southern war broke out- when the McClane Bros decided to leave Kentuckey I can not remember the given of either of the McClane Bros. But they bothe liberated there negro slaves they hac many and sold all there land - the Cave was sold to two men - who?s names I do not remember althou I have been told, these men were pardners in the agreement of buying the Cave. The deed of the Cave was made out to these two men, by the McClane Bros. And all that was paid down at that time was $25.00. These men were to make regular payments, but never did so. The McClane Bros. Had so much of this worlds goods they did not bother them about it and the full amount is still due. They settled again in Illinois these McClane Bros. One of them had eight children. He was my husbands Great- great grandfather, in some way he received the news that one of the men to whom they sold the Cave was dead - Now comes a case of curcumstancial evidence. It seams that one of these two men was a mean sort who wanter to get the Cave in his own name but could not persuade his pardner to sell - so one day the two men were seen going into the cave - only one came out again and that was the mean one - a week went by - and neighbors began to asked where the other pardner was (the good man) but could find out nothing. Thus a searching party went forth, and found him down in a gulch where they believed the mean pardner had thrown him from the Bank above. And it killed him, as the good man had no relatives there was nothing done about it and the mean man got the cave in his own posesion. I understand that the presant owners of the Cave are his decendents- One of the Daughters of my husbands Great Great Grandfather McClane who setteled in Illinois, who?s name was Elizibeth maried an enterpriseing young man after whom the Town of Barnhill, Ill. was named he built homes and induced people to come there and live - his daughter the oldest married James Whitson - that marrage tuck place in Fairfield or Springfield - Mrs. Nancy Maria Barnhill Whitson brought her husband and one child to Cal. Just about the end of the war 1853 - of that family there are four children liveing - Mrs. Murphy in Oregon. Frank Whitson in Sunsmure Cal. Geo. Whitson Alameda Cal. And Ed Whitson of Healdsburt Cal - who is my husband -

This is about all I can tell you about the Mammouth Cave. Mrs. Marie T. Jentzech Whitson, 426 Nort St Healdsburg Cal.

The births as I know them - McClane came from Europe - Elizibeth McClane his daughter - married Barnhill. Nancy Maria Barnhill his daughter was born in Barnhill Ill - married either in Springfield or Fairfield Ill. I can?t tell the place was not far from Barnhill - to James Whitson who was born in Monrow Co. Kentuckey. About 40 years ago Grandma Whitson recieved a letter from a Lawyer in Fairfield of Springfield Ill. asking her to sign a paper - but I could not induce her to do so - The Lawyer was doing some recearch work and came across the unpaid deed of the Cave - said if she would sign - he would fight the case for half - but she was not interested and distroied the letter. I do not know what year Henry went back- he married into the Turney family- Mrs. Ed. Whitson."

The following is a letter from an unidentified grandson of John Lovelady, from Cave Creek, Newton County, Arkansas. The letter was written to John W. Bowens, author of an 1892 History of Smith County, Tennessee, and quoted in Mr. Bowen's book. The book, apparently typewritten and "self-published", is a classic on the county and is available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

"My grandfather, John Lovelady, was a native of South Carolina. He and his wife both served in the Revolutionary and Indian Wars. Grandmother moulded bullets for the men while they fought, thus being used to camp and fort life.

They came to Tennessee in a one-horse wagon, cutting their way through cane and grape vines with a butcher knife and hatchet. They stopped near the head of Dixon's Creek, on the land now owned by Jessee Parker. Here finding a good spring, they erected a camp beside a large log and used their wagon for a bed room. Thus they passed their first winter in what became Smith County, amid the howling of wolves, screaming of panthers, growling of bears, yelping of turkeys, and hooting of owls.

When spring came, they built a cabin about a hundred yards above the spring, cleared a patch for corn and other vegetables and thus made preparations to live.

My father, Asa Lovelady, married a daughter of Henry McWhorter, and was one of the early settlers on Peyton's Creek, where he continued to live until 1837 or 38.

Success to you in writing the history of my native county."

According to family tradition in the Young family, William Young came to middle TN from SC by way of KY. He settled in what is now Smith Co., making his home on Sanderson's Branch of Peyton?s Creek. He died in 1799 and was buried on Tillman Dixon?s land in what is now Dixon Springs. According to a manuscript in the TN state archives, entitled "The Young Lineage", by Dr William Byrd Young, when William Young migrated to Middle TN "William Marchbanks and Sampson Williams came with him, and each of them afterward married a daughter of him." William Marchbanks married Jane Young and Margaret of course married Sampson Williams

A History Of Smith County,TN." William Young returned to Virginia from captivity. He was probably captive in Cherokee, North Carolina or Coker Creek area of TN. William married Elizabeth Holland and moved to South Carolina. Later he moved to Simpson Co.,Ky. Next he moved to Smith (then Sumner) County TN. He finally settled in what is now Pleasant Shade community. In 1798 William died after returning home from New Orleans. He was in New Orleans to visit his brother, Major John Young.

The Widow Young referred to in the journal of Steiner & Schweinitz was Elizabeth Holland Young, late wife of William Young -- no relation to the William Young married to Elizabeth Huff. The story is that he was captured by Indians when he was a child in Virginia and held by them for eight years (FHL 976.852/H2h, vol 1, section F839-840). Because he was too small to keep up with the tribe, the Cherokee captor said he would end the boy?s life. At that point another Indian stepped forward and said, "I want him for my slave, give him to me!" Later, William and his older brother John, also a captive of the tribe called the Overhill Indians, claimed they had been taken as far west as "the chalk plains." They were deeply indoctrinated in Indian ways, until William was 21 years old and an official treaty freed him and his brother to be repatriated. But John had to persuade William to leave the tribe.

This particular William Young married Elizabeth Holland and moved to South Carolina and then to Kentucky. Soon after his marriage, he left home to hunt along the Cumberland River. On Christmas night in 1779 he and his young friend, a man named Marchbanks, camped on the north bank of the river and watched while James Robertson and his party crossed the ice to settle the town now called Nashville. That same night, his wife gave birth to a baby girl back home, who much later grew up to marry Marchbanks. Eventually William and his wife Elizabeth Holland settled on Sanderson Branch of Peyton Creek in Pleasant Shade,Tennessee. When he died in 1799 at Tillman Dixon?s house in Dixon Springs Tennessee, he was buried still wearing Indian rings in his nose and ears. After her husband?s death, Elizabeth Holland Young married Mike Murphy.

James Clark Yoakum
James Clark Yoakum was born on July 26, 1847 in Bradley County, Tennessee. He met Millie Dennison born 1849 of Pulaski County, Missouri and married her November 29, 1865. Their three daughters, all born in Licking, Texas County, Missouri were; Mary Ann Yoakum born March 30, 1867; Margaret R. Mintie Yoakum born February 3, 1871, and Eantha Hester Hoakum (sic) born February 11, 1873.
In 1873 James Clark made a trip to Bonham to visit relatives. At this time a public sale of Texas land was in progress, so James made a bid of $16.85 for a river bottom farm somewhat lager than a section located 16 miles south of Decatur. His was the highest bit on the land, however, he did not see it until two years later. Other men who bid on this and other parcels of land eventually moved to Wise County, and became neighbors of the Yoakum family.
After his return to Licking, Missouri, James wife Millie became ill during the spring of 1874, so she asked her cousin, Catherine Dennison born March 29, 1853 in Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri, to come to her home and take care of her and the three daughters. As her health declined, Millie realized that she could not recover and asked Catherine to marry James Clark at an appropriate time. Although Catherine was engaged to marry Billie Frasier at the time she promised Millie that she would. The exact date of Millie's death is not known, but it was sometime near the end of October. Six weeks or so later, James Clark Yoakum married Catherine Dennison on december 11, 1874 in Black Oak, Missouri and moved the family to Rolla, Missouri. Their first son was William James Yoakum Jr. who was born October 22, 1875 at Rolla, Phelps County, Missouri. Several families formed a wagon train at Rolla to go to Wise County in Texas about the first of November 1875, arriving about five weeks later at Prairie Point (Rhome). The Yoakum family was glad to come with the train to stay with the grandparents of Catherine. Her grandfather was Merriath Followell born in 1798 in Kentucky; her grandmother was Catherine born in 1808 in Kentucky. The Followells had moved from Kentucky to Pulaski County, Missouri, than to Bonham and finally to Prairie Point near Decatur.
After the Yoakums family arrived in Prairie Point, James Clark went to see the river bottom farm he had purchased at the public land sale in Bonham in 1873. It did not seem suitable for his homestead so he made a trip to Bonham to see if Adam Stump Yoakum could sell him a better parcel of land. There was another farm of 85 acres 16 miles south of Decatur available, so James Clark Yoakum bought it and erected a tent for a temporary shelter until 1876 when a log cabin was built. Their first child was Louisa Jane born in the long cabin.
Louisa Jane was born September 28, 1878 and married Julius Grant Keeter born July 19, 1868 in Canton, Georgia on July 4, 1897 at Keeter. Their four children are; Ida Cleo Keeter born June 26, 1899, in Decatur; Orland Winston Keeter born June 19, 1901 in Fort Worth; Joy Grant Keeter born December 9, 1903 in Fort Worth and died July 28, 1960 and Elwyn Benson Keeter born April 14, 1908 in Fort Worth.
The community was called Keeter because Albert Lafayette Keeter was the first settler in 1873 and owned about 2000 acres of land south of Decatur. Albert Keeter was an older brother of Julius Grant Keeter.
The next child of James Clark Yoakum was born in a frame house built near the log cabin. He was Lonie Modrant Yoakum who was born July 2, 1881. while seining on the Trinity River near his home, James Clark Yoakum was bitten by a water moccasin snake June 24, 1902 and died 48 hours later at home. He was buried in the cemetery at Keeter.

Subject: Joseph Ephraim Forman marriage to Charlotte Gaskins

Since I often use and cite your tree I felt it only fair to share that I found marriage information at familysearch.org for this couple. Unfortunately it doesn't give parents names, which initially gave me concern that it might be the younger Ephraim... But since he was already married and the wife living, it seemed not to be.

In any case here it is:

Hi, Donna. Thanks for this!
It's interesting, and maybe a little confusing. I have in my notes something published online from LV Hayes, who I communicated with back in the 1990s - that Ephraim Sr. M2 Charlotte Gaskins. But if the marriage was in MS in 1924, like you say, it's not working. He was in St. Landry in 1810 census, unless he moved back, which is unusual. On the other hand, LV surmises that he never moved from MS into LA. So, that would mean the Joseph Ephraim in 1810 is somebody else. Jr. was b 1798; so not him in 1810.

Documentation shows him m to Charlotte Stutts 1813 in LA. I assume there's documentation Stutts is mother of all the children? I don't have that in my notes. I suppose Jr could have m2 Gaskins but that would mean children born after that date would be Gaskins, not Stuffs - but we're in the wrong place, unless he went to MS to get married and came back ??? Kind of reaching.
I need to get the Natchez Court Records book down and see if I can find something in it that might clear it up.

There's another Ephraim who was son of Edward Forman Jr & Nancy Perry - Nathan Ephraim; but he was bt in 1801 in Opel; m Tilithe Forman, who was child of Eprhaim Sr & Brown. Maybe Gaskins his m2? But not likely. Maybe yet another Ephraim?

If you figure it out for sure, let me know, and I'll do the same. It's a wonderful puzzle piece! Thanks!
Sherry

SINCE DAYS OF INDIANS HAS RICHARD J. MOORE LIVED IN THE COUNTY
Comes Away Impressed with Belief that Later Generations Should Organize to Perpetuate Memory of the Early Settlers

Judge Lewis Shepherd has been resticating for a few weeks, and while leisrely enjoying the inviting quiet of the more remote sections of the county, he chanced to visit the home of Richard J. Moore, in the old Eighteenth district, over 90 years of age and seventy years a resident of Hamilton County. The memory of the aged farmer is perfect, especially in relation to the early days, and Judge Shepherd, upon his return to Altamede, his own fine country home, jotted down some of the facts he gleaned while talking with Mr. Moore. He gives them to the public in the following inter esting communication:

Richard J. Moore, who lives in a comfortable, old-fashioned country home on a fine farm in the Eighteenth district of Hamilton County, is perhaps the only survivor of the first settlers of this county, and on account of his virtuous and amiable conduct throughout his long life, he deserves to be mentioned in print.

Mr. Moore is now ninety years, and four months old, and is a remarkably vigorous and well preserved man, considering his great age. His progeny, children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, number more than a hundred souls, and it is a source of supreme happiness to him when he reflects th at they are all, without an exception, honorable upright people. Mr. Moore is a native of Bledsoe County, but when a strippling of a lad removed with his parents first to McMinnville, in Warren County, and then to this county, of which he has been a resident and citizen more than seventy years. As the Indians moved out to go to their new home in the far west, t he Moores moved in and established their home on the foot hills of the White Oak Mountains, about twelve miles east of Ross' Landing. His mother so on became a widow, but being an industrious woman, full of energy and practical sense, and endowed with the wisdom of economy, she was able to rear her children in comfort and give them such education as the facilities of the county put within her reach. One of her sons, who was afflicted with lameness, was a school teacher who achieved a considerable reputation as an instructor in the early times in which he lived.

Her son, Richard J. Moore, married Miss Margaret Pittner about sixty-five years ago, and by this marriage thirteen children, all of whom, save one who died in infancy, lived to manhood and womanhood. They are all married except one son who lives in Texas, and a daughter, Miss Virginia, who lives with and is the comfort of her father in his declining years. God, has signally blessed the old gentleman with a daughter who is willing to forego all the pleasures of her young life and to devote her life and her love. Through his long life he has been a citizen without a blemish on his character, a man of undoubted integrity in his business relations.

When a young man Mr. Moore was converted to the Christian religion under t he preaching of Rev. Hiram Douglass, one of the greatest pioneer preachers in Tennessee; he joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church, and from that time till now he has been a faithful earnest worker and elder in the denomination. He has always been honored by everybody who knew him for his pious devotion to his duties to God and his fellow men. He is and has been a Christian without reproach.

Doctor Sauls is now conducting a revival meeting near Mr. Moore's home, and he has several times attended the meetings, at which he exhorts sinne rs to repentance and encourages mourners with the same earnestness and fervor of manner that he was accustomed to when he was in the prime of his life and fim of manhood.

Some of his descendants live now in the states of Arkansas and Texas, but most of his sons and daughters and grown children live in Chattanooga and in the nearby country.

Let us not, in the hurry and bustle of these modern times, forget to honor the pioneers who laid the foundation upon which our own county and ci ty became great. Let us get up a society to perpetuate the memory or o ur prognitors, such as the Websters, the McCallies, the Hookes, the Whitesides and others.

Revolutionary War officer, Pittsburgh business and civic leader, born in Hillsborough, Ireland. Craig took part in the capture of the Hessians at Trenton on Christmas night 1776, and fought in the battles of Princeton, Brandywine, and Germantown (all 1777); he wintered at Valley Forge (1777-78). Commanding Fort Pitt, Craig led troops to assist George Rogers Clark in the Detroit expedition (1781). Craig was deputy quartermaster general and military storekeeper of Pittsburgh (1791), led federal troops during the Whiskey Rebellion (1794), and helped prepare munitions during War of 1812.

Isaac Craig, originally from Ireland, and his business partner, Stephen Bayard, purchased all of the ground between Fort Pitt and the Allegheny River from John Penn and his son in 1783.

A Revolutionary War captain who saw action at Brandywine and Germantown and wintered at Valley Forge, Craig came to Fort Pitt in 1781. Eventually, he purchased the site of Fort Pitt and resided in the blockhouse with his family for several years.

After the war, Craig served as deputy quartermaster general and military storekeeper of Pittsburgh and led federal troops in 1794 during the Whiskey Rebellion. In "The History of Pittsburgh: Its Rise and Progress," published in 1906, Craig is credited with filling "many offices of public trust, and took an active part in making and developing his adopted town."

Buried in the grave yard of the First Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh PA (later removed to Allegheny Cemetery). Came to American in 1765, landing near Philadelphia. He was a house carpenter and worked at this trade becoming a master builder which he continued until the breaking our of the Revolution. He enlisted in the navy. In November 1775, he was commissioned lieutenant of marines (probably the first ever appointed in our navy)

In February, 1785, Major Craig married Amelia Neville, the only daughter of John Neville, a native of Virginia, and the colonel of one of the Virginia regiments, who was
then residing at Woodville, about eight miles from Pittsburgh, and about one half-mile south of the new stone Episcopal Church, on the Washington turnpike. He had entered a large body of land there, before the Revolution, while it was supposed to belong to Virginia.

Major Craig had a taste for, and a very respectable knowledge of Mathematics, was an excellent carpenter, and was fond of mechanic art generally, and philosophical experiments; and it was, no doubt, because of this knowledge, and these inclinations, that the American
Philosophical Society, in May, 1787, unexpectedly,
on his part, complimented him by electing him a member.

In September, 1787, an Act was passed by the Legislature, incorporating the Presbyterian Congregation of the town of Pittsburgh. In this Act eleven trustees were named, six of
whom were officers in the Revolutionary army, Major Craig being one. The congregation proceeded immediately to erect a log church on the spot where the beautiful stone edifice is now almost completed; Isaac Craig being one of the building committee, as he was afterwards in the erection of the original brick church around the primitive log building.

Smokie, as he was known, was a kind and strong man. He loved and laughed easily and loved to rib people. His daughter-in-laws didn't quite know how to take him when they first met, because of his pratical joking. When you recieved his jokes you were expected to give back as given, he loved to laugh at himself.

Smokie was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing, especially deer and quail. Many was the time he went quail hunting with his sons and grandsons. Always ready with 'braggin rights', it was common to sit around the fire at night and recount the times we shot 4 birds with one shot or other gregarious fibs. No fisherman ever had stories greater than those told on those nights.

Smokie started life in eastern Oklahoma at a place called Greenbriar, near present day Pryor Creek, Oklahoma. His family moved from there to Texas, then to Sayer, Oklahoma, Portales, New Mexico and finally to Glendale, Arizona.

It was in Sayer were he married the love of his life Rose Annette Grady. He met Rose in Pampa, Texas, but married her in Sayer on July 8 1933. I'm not sure, but I suspect dad was a bit of a hobo in those days, since the railroad went through Sayer and Pampa, the two towns are a considerable distance and that would be the easiest way to travel. However, that's only my guess.

After moving to Arizona he worked as a welder at Luke Air Force Base in WWII and received many honors for his ingenuity in repair of aircraft. Dad eventually became a Ford auto-mechanic and worked for Grey Madison, Read Mullin and Don Sanderson Ford dealers. He was forcibly retired due to serious back injuries, but stayed as active as his injuries would allow. Besides quail hunting his favorite pass time was exploring the desert and mountains North of Phoenix in his old flat finder jeep, along with his very good friend Clarence Mathis. They were quite a pair and spent many days exploring back roads and mines which are in abundance in the mountains.

After exhausting every avenue I know to find Catherine's parents, I've gone to the least advisable method, a methodical, logical approach with no hard evidence. This is my best theory; just go with me step by step.

To begin, John and Catherine's children:
Wm Rissler m Susan Boone
Phebe Rissler m Squire Boone Jr.
Squire and Susan Boone kids of Moses Boone.

prob 1st or 2nd cousin marriages.
if 1st cousins:
would mean Moses, their father, is the sibling to Catherine (b Nov 1767), meaning she could be dau Squire II.

Squire I, m 1744
1 Jonathan b Aug 1766
2 Moses b Mar 1769
Catherine b 13 mos after Jonathan
and born 16 mos before Moses
these were born in NC; do we know where she was born? if NC, she could be Squire II's 2nd child and Moses the 3rd. Not totally exclusionary but she did not name a child Jane or Squire.

If Catherine's two children married 2nd cousins,
would mean Catherine was daughter of one of Squire II's brothers.
Assuming I have them all, we'll go through each one:

- Israel Boone (not possible) b 1724 d Jun 1756 in NC.
Catherine's born too long after he died.

- Samuel Boone (possible) b 1728 m Sarah Day
I have several kids and not exact birth dates on some but last one I have is Apr 1768 enough time to have Catherine last child. family seemed to have lived in MO, and NC.

- Jonathan Boone (???) b 1730, m Mary Carter -- need to get their kids and death dates.

- Daniel Boone - of fame (not possible) b 1734
his kids too documented

- George Boone (not possible) b 1739 m Nancy Linville
first child born 1765
next known b Feb 1768
Catherine b Nov 1767, 3 mos before -- so rule him out.

- Edward "Ned" (not possible) and Martha Bryan; son George b Apr 67. Rule out Edward.

- Squire II (father of Moses; so if children marred 1st cousins; see above)

That's it. So looks like most likely candidates would be:
Squire II and Jane Van Cleve (1st cousin marriages)
Jonathan and Mary Carter
Samuel and Sarah Day --- 2nd cousin marriages and Catherine and John named a son Samuel and a daughter Sarah.

Samuel and Sarah seem best candidates for parents. Need to get better birth dates/locations on kids and who they married. If one of them married a Rissler or lived next door -- that would be helpful. :)
Until then I have attached her there, as we know she is in the family -- with a cautionary note (daughter?)

This study was done while trying to help Sharon Phillips, a descendant of Catherine Boone Rissler.

182 George Sugg/George A. Sugg/George Augustus Sugg, son of George Sugg, Jr. and Judith Tyson was born about 1758 from most family researchers, estimates and most likely Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He died about 5 October 1810 in Henderson County, North Carolina. His
Will has not been found, but his Estate was inventoried on February 12, 1816 in Henderson County, Kentucky. One account says, ?George Augustus Sugg and born 4 July 1756 and ran a tavern in Nashville, Tennessee in 1790 as proved by a covenant with Elijah Robertson to let him buy liquor and meals ?at usual tavern rates? to pay for corn Robertson was to deliver to him in November of 1790.This account comes from Davidson County, Tennessee records, where on is dated 29 June 1790.He married 2) Mrs. Sarah Patience Jones Sugg on 13 April 1781, the widow of Joel Sugg, brother to George A. Sugg.Their children:Wiley Sugg, Louisa Sugg, Allen J. Sugg, Lavenia Suggs, Martha Sugg and Zeletus Sugg.
1) Wiley Sugg was born 13 January 1784.He married Keziah (Other records show she was nee Keziah Hart Stanley, a descendant of Patriot Benjamin Hart - DAR # 120956 application.
2) Louisa Sugg was born about 1786.She married a Robert Robertson.
3) Allen J. Sugg was born 25 December 1791 and he married Sarah Dupree Mann.
4) Martha Sugg was born 28 August 1797 and she married Hiram Walker.
5) Lavenia Sugg was born 21 March 1806 and she married Richard Jones.
6.) Zeletus Sugg and she married Burwell Williams.

From the DAR # 44243 application of Mrs. Katherine Sugg McKnight, of Louisville, Kentucky gives the list of children for both marriages of Sarah Patience Jones Sugg?s husbands 1) Joel Sugg and 2) George A. Sugg.

George A. Sugg was summoned for Jury Duty for Davidson County, North Carolina in 1778.He purchased land on Spencer?s Creek, formally Wilson County, North Carolina now Summer County. These two references come from ?1770-1790 Census of the Cumberland Settlements? by Richard Carlton Fulcher, book page 117-118.George A. apparently moved to Tennessee along with his father?s people by 1789 for on 17th of January of that year, he received three Land Grants in Davidson County, Tennessee. On 18th of May 1789, he received six more Grants and on the 20th May two more for a total of 7, 680 acres. On 21st of December 1791 in Davidson County, Tennessee he sold for L100 currency of North Carolina a Negro Boy named Aaron about age six to Andrew Jackson.A few days earlier on the 5th of December, he had sold Simon Sugg a Negro Wench.Simon Sugg therefore apparently also moved to Tennessee.Simon Sugg was a nephew of George A. and half brother to his children.
In 1810, (Deed Book 8, page 174) Wiley Sugg of Henderson County, Kentucky, Attorney In Fact for George A. Sugg and Patience, his wife, turned her interest in her mother?s Estate to James and Caswell Armstrong. It is surmised these two men were sons of Sarah Patience Jones Sugg, sister in turn her nephews.

183 On October 12, 1774 Court Minutes (CM 1774, Pg. 135) shows that Richard Suggs was a Constable according to the Anson County, North Carolina records.Benjamin Smith of Anson County, North Carolina sold 75 acres to William Yerly on July 25 1760 (Deed Book 6, Pg. 39) wherein witnesses were David Dumas, William Snuggs and Richard Snuggs.Anson County Court Minutes of 1771-1774, shows on January 14, 1773, list Richard Snuggs, Constable.Benjamin Griffin deeded to Richard Snuggs on Wednesday, April 13, 1774, which was proven by Robert Snuggs.

1772, John Davis deed to William Irby and proven by Robert Snuggs (Court Minutes 1771-1777, Pg. 72).

Sugg (Suggs), Robert (I95475)

185 Thomas Sugg, son of George and Sarah Ives Sugg may have been the one who received and Land Grant in New Hanover County, North Carolina in 1749.The same Thomas who was named a Vestryman in Saint Gabriel? Parish on March 17, 1749, when Duplin County was cut off from New Hanover County. Then it is possibly that this could have been the same man who was later in Anson County, North Carolina.
A Thomas Eldridge Sugg is mentioned in Duplin County on April 14, 1752, selling to Samuel Eldridge (Deed Book 1, Pg. 130) ?land granted to Thomas Sugg by patent on 13 April 1749?.Whether or not the middle name ?Eldridge? should correctly be applied to this man it is very questionable. It appears that perhaps the Elderidge has been crossed through and it is possible that the person making the record mixed up the surnames of the two men involved.
Some have also said that William Aldridge in North Cumberland County, North Carolina listed a daughter Sarah, wife of Thomas Sugg. However, this report is in error. The document cited for January 24, 1724 (WB 1718-1726, Pg. 359) list daughter, Sarah Sugg.
On the day after Thomas Sugg and Samuel Eldridge made their deal, Thomas Sugg sold to Tomas Alltaman (Deed Book 1, Pg. 132) land granted to ?said? Sugg by patent April 13, 1749.
Thomas Sugg and wife Frances sold land to James Moore on April 29, 1769, land that Thomas purchased from William Magee on March 31, 1757 (Deed Book G, Pg. 186-188).When Thomas purchased the land from Magee he was listed as Thomas Sugg, Jr.
On November 15, 1753, a Thomas Sugg (more than likely son of George Sugg and Sarah Ives) of Duplin County, North Carolina received a 320 acre land grant.Could it be that the same man (Thomas, son of George Sugg and Sarah Ives) who is mentioned in the settlement of the Estate of John Holbrook in Bertie County, North Carolina in 1744 be one in the same?
Another Thomas Sugg appears in Craven County, North Carolina in 1762, when he sells (Deed Book 2, Pg. 382) 162 acres patented to William Sugg in 1739 to Joseph Rhem.William Sugg patented 140 acres on the north side of the Trent River on Wilson?s Creek (Colonial Records, Book 4, Pg. 440).Was this Thomas Sugg his son?
William Snuggs (Sugg) was on of three witnesses for the Benjamin Smith sell of 75 acres William Yearly on October 12, 1774 (Deed Book 6, Pg.39).
No factual determination has been made connecting Thomas Sugg of Duplin and the Thomas Sugg of Anson County. All records perhaps refer to the same individual or may not.Breakdown of the dates show that after 1752 in Duplin County only Thomas Sugg, Jr. and Thomas Sugg with wife, Frances are mentioned.

195 Mary Peck was also known as Sarah Denton Listed as William Thornes spouse in Eight Generations of William Thorne, by Joseph Middleton, 1913. She was also known as Mary Larson. She was also known as Mary Lawson. She was also known as Mary Oriar. Mary Peck was born in 1679 at Of, Dettingen Parrish, Virginia.

10 May 1708 - Richmond Co., VA: Robert Peck and wife Margaret of St. Mary's Parish, Richmond Co., VA, execute a lifetime lease to John and Mary Orian[Oriar] of Stafford Co., VA for 100 acres of land. After John and Mary Oriar's deaths, the land is to go to their daughter Margaret Oriar. Robert Peck states that this transaction is for "the love, goodwill, and affection which I have and bare towards my loving friend, Margaret Oriar, dau. to John and Mary Oriar."

Mary Peck sold land 5/6 July 1733--John Orear (husband of Mary) is for sure deceased. A King George Co., VA deed refers to the grantors "William Thorn and Mary his wife, widdow and relique of John Oreo late of Prince William County, deceased" along with "John Glascock & Margaret his wife, daughter of the said John Oreo & Mary his wife. . . " all selling their interests to Cornelius McCartie of Brunswick Parish, King George Co., VA.

Cornelius McCartie (b. ca. 1766) was married 2 Dec 1787 to Susannah "Sukey" Hardwick (born 1767), dau. of Margaret Glascock (b. ca. 1745) and her first husband Aaron Hardwick (she m. 2nd to William Turley). Margaret Glascock was the dau. of John Glascock and wife Margaret Orear (above referenced). By the way, Cornelis and Susannah McCartie later moved to Fayette Co., KY ca. 1797; in 1809 they were residents of Otter Creek in Hardin Co., KY (now Meade Co.); they had 11 children, one of whom was named Enos Orear McCarty.]

----------------------

this site suggests that Mary Peck married William Thorn either Nov 1719 or 1724 and states not verified. The above land sell by Mary Peck in 1733 and this marriage to Wm Thorn does not coincide with a death date of Orear being after 4 Oct 1736. Also, John Orear would have had to be older than b 1686 as this study has Margaret b 1801; making him only 15 - nnot likely.

Also, if Robert Peck left land to Margaret Orear, she would have had to been born well before 1708 as he refers to her as "my loving friend." Would he have said this of a 7 or 8 year old granddaughter?

This Margaret is possibly the Margaret Orear who married Scarlett Madden. Scarlett's Margaret couldn't have been born as early as 1801 considering their known children.

There must be another John Orear. Why does Mary have so many surnames??? Why is it suggested that Mary Peck and Mary Lawson are one and the same?? I think this is Mary Lawson, as there is a child named "Lawson" and Mary Peck is a different Mary and therefore a different John Orear, one a bit older, who also had a child named Margaret.
