Transcriber's Notes:
(snip)
* Following are notes pertaining to individual entries in the above
Captain's List: (Also see separate notes on "Wherefrom", below.)
(snip)
75 Block Gg Mich - Listed as "M G Block" in the QA. Later known as
George Frederick Block, he was an early settler of Port Neches,
Jefferson County, Texas, and the great-great-grandfather of this
transcriber.
76 Block Auguste - Second wife of passenger #75, George Block, and
great-great-grandmother of this transcriber.
77 Emilie Block - Daughter of #75, George Block, by his first wife.
78-82 Other children of #75 and #76, George and Augusta Block. Carl Block,
#79, later known as Charles Louis Block, is the great-grandfather of
this transcriber.
83 Wippernitz Ad Wwe - The lower case portion of "Wwe" is small, raised,
and underscored. This is an abbreviation for the German word "witwe",
or widow (of). She was almost certainly the mother-in-law of #75,
George Block, and great-great-great-grandmother of this transcriber.
In the 1850 U.S. Census of Jefferson County, Texas, she was listed as
Maria C. E. Wippenitz (sic). If anyone has ever encountered either
form of this surname, Wippernitz or Wippenitz, anywhere else in the
world, this transcriber would be most grateful to know about it.
91 Knuppel August - Umlaut over the "u" in Knuppel.
75-91 Lassa? - Either "Lassau" or "Lassan". No current German location
named Lassau can be found. However, there is a location Lassan,
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in the area where the Block family is known
to have lived prior to immigrating. On some 19th century maps, this
location is labeled "Lassahn". This transcriber would appreciate any
information you may have about Lassau, Lassan, or Lassahn.
Transcriber's personal note: * The Block and Wippernitz family on this voyage of the Constitution includes ancestors of this transcriber. Please let me know if you locate any of your family on this passage or otherwise find this transcription useful in your research. My e-mail link is below.

__________________________ About the Bark Constitution: The bark CONSTITUTION was built by Johann Lange, of Vegesack/Grohn, for the Bremen firm of H. H. Meier & Co--whose owner, Hermann Heinrich Meier 1808-1898), later founded Norddeutscher Lloyd--and was launched on 7 November 1833, as the successor to a bark of the same name, built in 1820, that had been lost earlier in the year. 127 Commerzlasten; 27,6 x 7,7 x 4,7 meters (length x beam x depth of hold). She sailed for almost 25 years in the packet service between Bremerhaven and New York. Captains (in turn): J. F. Volckmann, G. C. Ahlhorn, J. F. G. E. G. Thormann, Hermann Rothfos, F. G. Schelling, J. D. Luth, W. Lauer, and Jurgen Hake. She was sold in Bangkok in 1859; her later history and ultimate fate are not known. [Posted to the Enigration-Ships Mailing List by Michael Palmer - 28 February 1998] http://www.fortunecity.com/littleitaly/amalfi/13/shipc.htm _____________________ Comment: I would like to find who the Witt family was. Esther Dorthea Witten and Martin Bogislaff Gentzen (Gentz) were were the parents of Christian Gentz. These families, Gentz, Maass, Koch, Knupple, and Block, were all interconnected in varying degrees. So, since the name is so similar, and they too went to Texas, from the same place, it's at least quite curious. Following that line of speculation, this researcher has found no record of August Schunemann's whereabouts or his kinship, if there is one.
