Thomas Mathews

Thomas H. Mathews, 75, died at 10:38 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, at Saint Anthony's Hospita l in Alton.
He was born Jan. 15, 1930, in Alton to Willard R. and Gertrude A. (Herchenroeder) Mathews. H e married his high school sweetheart, the former Mary Helen Hunt, on April 16,
1955, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton. She survives.
The U.S. Marine Corps veteran was honorably discharged as a sergeant in
1952. He retired from Alton Box Board as an electrician after 35 years of service. He
was past president of UPP Union Workers Local 976 and a board member for many years at the Al ton Box Board Credit Union. He was a member of Alton Moose Lodge 951 and Alton-Wood River Spo rtsman's Club and managed Little League baseball in Alton for six
years. An avid bowler and golfer, he belonged to several leagues. He was a member of SS. Pete r and Paul Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Julie Ann and Marc Co cozza of Alton; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas V. and Liz Mathews of Overland Park, Kan. ; five grandchildren, Mitchell Ryan Daniels, Elizabeth Anne Enstall, Rebecca Marie Enstall, G race Helen Mathews and Natalie Rose Mathews; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Dorothy Mae an d Herman Boren of Godfrey and Carol Ann Martenize of Austin, Texas; one brother, Ralph Mathew s, and his wife, Mary Catherine, of Bethalto; one sister-in-law, Kaye Mathews of Alton; numer ous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard Mathews; a sister and brother-i n-law, Ruth and Roland Jun Jr.; one niece, Linda Boren; and his inlaws, Victor C. and Helen M . Hunt.
Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until services at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gent Funeral Home i n Alton, with Father Roger Schoenhofen officiating.
Burial will be at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Godfrey.
Memorials may be given to the Crisis Food Center or St. Vincent de Paul Society at SS. Pete r and Paul Catholic Church.
