EAST ALTON - Howard R. Black, 81, died Monday, Dec.23,1996, at 12:45 a.m.at Rosewood
Care Center in Edwardsville.
Born March 29,1915, in Galatin County, he was the son of the late Silas E. and Eunice (Button ) Black
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he was a member of Labor Local 218 i n Alton for 50 years.
He worked as a laborer on construction and later was employed by the East Alton Street Depart ment, retiring in 1980.
He married the former Vera E. Ruyle May 23,1953, in East Alton. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Kevin and Lois Shaw of Alton and Mark Blac k of Rosewood Heights; a daughter and son-in-law, Mellinda and Kenneth Snider of South Roxana ; four grandchildren; a brother, Clifford Blade of Junction; and a sister, Wilma Vinyard of W ood River.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow and Robert Randall Black, and a sister, Bel va Vinyard.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood
Heights, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday. The Rev. Dan Smith will officiat e.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the First General Baptist Church of Rosewood Heights, where he wa s a member, or the American Lung Association.
