Notes |
- She was only 14 or so when she married Uncle Jr. and when he went into the Army, she decided she didn't want to be married, and sent him a dear john letter - later regretted it deeply, but he would not take her back.
Mother said the first thing you notice about Hilda were her extraordinary blue eyes. She had brown hair.
Billy Ward was her older brother. He and my dad were friends in school - high school or middle school? -- and Billy would take Daddy home every day for lunch, and every day his mom fixed beans and rice -- every day Daddy remembered His militay record states he had one year of high school; so best guess is it would have been around 15 or 16 years old.
There was another older brother, and then a younger brother by a few years. Mother remembers her parents taking Hilda and her brother and mother so they could all visit Jr. in Alexandria when he was in the Army. The younger brother, Byron, hd a nickname they called him, like maybe Butch or Buddy or something. She remembers he was about 10 years old and had real blond hair. When they went to eat somewhere, the boy was collecting tips that had been left on the tables.
Mother also remembered a story that after Hilda and Jr. were divorced, but Mother was not yet married, that Hilda was taking Mom up to a lake or somewhere and Hilda stopped and picked up a couple of Army boys hitchhiking. It scared my mom, buthe boys were very nice. She said when the told Hilda later she shouldn't have done that, Hilda just laughed.
Hilda somehow knew Judy Lemaire's mother, Margie, and they were good friends. (Mary Marjorie Scaife Lemaire). Margie loaned mother her bassinette for me when I was born in Sept and then got it back from my mom when Judy was born the followingovember.
Mom remembers going to see Hilda after her son Jerome Armand was born and understood that he grew to be a doctor and moved to NY. He seems to currently be practicing in Georgia. She thinks that Hilda married again after divorcing Armand, but st touch. (She did, but the marriage did not last. She apparently didn't marry again after #3, as he she died with his last name.
