- COL. WILLIAM BALL, (9--1), of Lancaster Co., Va., b. 1676; d. 1745; eldest son of Capt. William and Margery (Downman) Ball; made will Aug. 14, 1744, probated March 8, 1745; served as Surveyor of Northumberland Co., 1724; was a staunch and liberal supporter of the Established Church, and a Vestryman of Christ Church; m. Hannah Beale, d. prior to 1744. Issue: 10--1. William, Capt., of Lancaster Co., Va., d. prior to 1744; served as Justice, High Sheriff, Inspector and Capt. of Militia, 1727 to [p.32] 1737; m. Feb. 17, 1723, Margaret Ball, dau. of Capt. Richard and Saran (Young) Ball, and had issue. 10--2. GEORGE; of whom later. 10--3. Sarah, m. (first) Sept. 22, 1724, Dennis McCarty, d. 1744, son of Capt. Daniel and -- (Payne) McCarty, of Westmoreland Co., Va.; (second) Abram Barnes, and had issue. 10--4. Judith, m. April 13, 1726, George Glasscock, who made will Oct. 19, 1793, probated Sept. 6, 1796; and had issue. 10--5. Ellen, m. (first) July 3, 1734, Richard Chichester, of Fair-weather, Lancaster Co., Va., son of John and Elizabeth (Symes) Chi-chester; (second) June 12, 1747, William Downman, son of Rawleigh and Margaret (Ball) Downman, and had issue. 10--6. Henry ffleett, Mr. Thomas Carter, Mr. John Turberville, Richard Chichester Esqr Justices, Major William Ball, Capt. George Heale, Mr. Thomas Lee. The County of Lancaster being indebted the sum of six thousand pounds of tobaco do order that a levy of five pounds and three quarters of a pound of tobacco by the poll be collected by Capt Richard Ball Sheriff of this County off and from every tithable person in this County and that he pay the same to the severall Creditors hereafter named, viz To the Honrble Robert Carter Esq. for keeping the ferry 1400; To Mrs. Barbara Tayloe 1000; To Wm Dare Attrny for the King 1000; To Mrs Martha Howard for water, candles and cleaning the Court House 800; To the Sheriff for extraordinary service 500; To Mr John Turberville for Coroners Enquiry 133. !8 Mar 1744: The will of WM. BALL, dat. Aug. 14, 1744, pro. Lanc'r Co. Mar. 8, 1744-5, entails his land in five sections to his eight male heirs, making the will too lengthy to be copied in full. 1. To his gr. son, Wm. Ball, his Lanc'r Co. lands on which the testator then lived, and his male heirs, for want of which successively by entail to his gr. son, Williamson Ball, son of Wm., dec'd; gr. son, Benjamin Ball, gr. son, Richard Ball, gr. son, William Ball, son of George; gr. son, George Ball; failing all of which, to his heirs at law. 2. Also, under similar limitations, his lands in Lanc'r Co. whereon his dau.-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Ball, lived, to his gr. son, Richard. 3. Ditto, his Westmoreland lands, with 200 a. in K. G. Co., to gr. son, Williamson Ball, son of Wm., dec'd. 4. Ditto, 400 a. in K. G., adjoining Richland Run. seated by his son, Wm. Ball, dec'd, to his male heirs, &c. 5. Ditto, his Richmond Co. lands where Capt. George Heale formerly lived, to his son George Ball; to same his K. G. land below the Little Falls, and 500 a. in K. G., &c. To same and his heirs forever two lots in Queenstown. To his daughters-in-law, Mrs. Margaret Ball and Mrs. Judith Ball, wife of his son, George Ball, his daughters, Sarah McCarty, Judith Glasscock, Ellen Chichester, and single dau., Hannah Ball, various legacies of negroes, stock, money, &c. To his daughters, Sarah, Judith, Ellen and Margaret Ball, 25 each. To his niece, Sarah Opie, one negro, &c. Son George Ball to be exec'r. Wit. Jesse Ball, Wm. Downman and Michael Dillen.
