!1770: Edge Hill was described in 1934 as set on a hill overlooking Lancaster Creek and the lowlands beyond, back from the Rappahannock. A large brick mansion, it was the seat of a large estate, a home of the Chinn family. The estate, part of a Chinn grant was inherited by John Chinn, a grandson of Rawleigh and Esther Ball Chinn who, about 1770, built the mansion. His son John Yates Chinn graduated in Medicine at St. George and St. Thomas Hospital, London England. Upon his return to Virginia married Sally (Sarah Fairfax) Carter one of the several daughters of Councilor Robert Carter of Nomini hall. Once there were terraced gardens. It had a facade one hundred fifty feet across. Guidebook of the Northern Neck by R. Ragland Eubank in 1934. It was located far up on Lancaster Creek, near a road that turns left at Fairplay, off the Simonson Road. Nothing is left of the mansion but an outlline of the foundation.
