Notes |
- John Welch Prewitt was a son of Abraham Pruitt and Margaret Ann White. John married his cousin, Nancy Pruitt (spelled Pruett, Prueit or Prewitt).
John was landowner at Tuscaloosa and the richest man in the state. He had over 300 slaves. He established the 2-acre burial ground in the 1820's. Possibly the largest known slave cemetery in Alabama, the Prewitt slave cemetery became the final resting place for 300 to 500 slaves and their descendents. See Old Prewitt Slave Cemetery.
