Elizabeth Grimes could be one of daughters of Robert (census showed him with a daughter b 1826-1830. If so, then William would be her nephew.
she could also be daughter of Joseph Melvin Doak & Margaret who had a daughter 1826-1830. In that case, William wouldbe a cousin. More likely nephew.

Subject: john nathaniel doak
I have his father as William H Doak and mother as Sarah Catherine Wilson, this is from the family tree of Woodrow Doak, a great uncle. The family history was that John Nathaniel lived with relatives (Robert Doak and Martha Doak ) most of his childhood. His father was in Mississippi, I don't have a death date or any information beyond Woodrow Doak's history. I can find no information about Sarah Catherine Wilson. His grandparents were John Doak and Mary Foster Doak. There are records for most of this , but the information of William Doak and wife Sarah are unknown to me.
Do you have more information about Harriett Newell Roark, Which William C Roark is her father and what is the name Newell from? I have seen Harriett's middle name as Elizabeth and Newell.
Any information you can send me would be graetly appreciated. John Nathaniel is my 3rd great grandfather on my mothers paternal side. Joyce Smith
response:
Hi, Joyce.
I've tried to track this through, but it's not consistent with what I have. That's not to say my info if perfect by any means. The Doaks are complicated to say the least.
First:
you said: Lived most of his life with Robert (1785-1821) & Martha (Fielding) Doak:
Robert died 1821 Wilson co TN and Nathaniel b 1814 - so only 7 when Robert died; so not "most of his life" -- perhaps another Robert?
you said grandson of John Doak & Mary Foster thru their son William:
The William I have linked as their son is William Hugh who m Jane Wilson - but that can't be right - that Wm Hugh b too early to be their William. Did a quick Google for Wm Hugh, but nothing readily showing up - just marking him "(not son)" for now.
To get a visual on this I created a "William H. Doak" to be son of John Doak and Mary Foster -- and attached John Nathaniel as a son. John Nathaniel b 1814 - so his father should have been b abt 1794 which appears that he could be the eldest child of John & Mary Foster Doak.
`ss
concluding:
John Nathaniel is not son of Wm H but is same as Nathaniel, son of Robert who are next to each other in census records.
John Nathaniel b 1814 Wilson TN
Nathaniel b bet 1811 and 1820 per 1830 Campbell TN and 1840 Madison Co AR census.
John Nathaniel's wife (Harriet Roark) b 1813 TN; d AR
Nathaniel's wife: b bet 1811 and 1820 per 1840 AR census
John Nathaniel's son b 1848 - so after 1840, when another couple was living with Nathaniel and wife. (male bet 1821 and 1825 and female bet 1826 and 1830)

Subject: It gets messy before Nathaniel Doak
The information I have matches what you have back to Nathaniel Doak b. 1814 in Tennessee (Campbell?) d. in 1880 in Madison Co Arkansas (Kings River?) It gets really complex after that.
Per the Anderson family tree, Nathaniel was the son of Robert Doak (1770-1850) and Nancy Pope (1772-1790). They list Robert's father as David Doak (1710-1787) and his mother as Mary Hanna (1740-1826).
Per the Chaney family tree, Robert Doak (1770-1850) was married a number of times (Nancy, Isabel Duke and Mary ?) including Nancy Pope. One of their sons was Nathaniel Doak (1814-1850). This family tree also lists Robert's father as David Doak (1702-1787).
Per the Hornbaker family tree, Nathaniel was the son of Rev John Whitfield Doak (1778-1820) and Jane Alexander (1773-1840). I question this connection as the Doak line of the Rev. John Whitfield Doak is very well documented. The Descendants of James Doak and The Genealogy of the Emigrant Doaks (Notable Southern Families, Volume VI) and neither lists a son named Nathaniel.
Per the Strickland family tree, Nathaniel was the son of Robert Doak and Nancy Pope. They list Robert's father as David Doak and his mother as Mary Polly (1730-1765). This tree lists David Doak's father as James Doak (1670-1727) and his mother as Elizabeth ? (1674-1713). It lists James Doak's father as Samuel Doak and his mother as Widow Doak.
In The Descendants of James Doak, David Doak (born in Antrim Co., Ireland and died 02 Oct 1787) was married to Mary? and had a son named Robert, but they don't have anything about Robert son of David.
In The Genealogy of the Emigrant Doaks (Notable Southern Families, Volume VI) Samuel Doak, lived and died in County Antrim of the Province of Ulster, Ireland. His sons, John, Narthaniel, Robert, David and Samuel with their sister Thankful emigrated to America about 1740.
Emigrant David Doak per his will probated Oct 2, 1787 mentions wife Mary, sons David, Samuel, Nathaniel, William, James, Robert, Thomas, Alexander and John; daus, Elizabeth, Jane, Mary and Margaret.
I think we are solid back to Nathaniel Doak b. 1814 in Tennessee. After that, as best as I can determine, his parents were Robert Doak and Nancy Pope. I think Robert's parents were David Doak and Mary ? (Hanna or Polly?) David was the son of Samuel and emigrated to America about 1740. This differs from what you have in that I think Robert may be descended from David rather than from Robert Doak who was David's brother.
Let me know if you think my conclusions are valid or not. I can't prove any of it.
James Vaughan
