- J.A. "Bub" Madden
With most of his family, his joys of this life, gathered around his bedside, J.A "Bub" Madden slipped to the inconceivable joys of the next life on Friday evening, December 6, 2002. It was the day after his 83rd birthday, and his life was one of activity, health, happiness, and giving.
A native and lifelong resident of Arcadia, Louisiana, he was a graduate of Arcadia High School and Louisiana Tech in Civil Engineering. The only period away from his hometown was during his military service during World War II, when he served in the Atlantic and Pacific. A peaceful man, he didn't talk much about the war, but viewed it as a period of service to his country and fellow man.
After the war, he returned to Arcadia to work in the family business, a men's clothing store started by his father in 1921. He enjoyed clothing people of the area with everything from cowboy boots for children, to dress hats for gentlemen, but what he really enjoyed was the relationships.
His genuine love of people was evidenced by the large number of friends and acquaintances he had through the years, many of whom would just stop by to visit with him
when they were in town.
He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Arcadia, and his life was one of service to others, both in the church and in the community.
He was elected to the Bienville Parish Police Jury in 1970 and served for 10 years. He was a Lion and was active until his death. He enjoyed gardening and loved to take vegetables to friends in the community. He will be missed by
many.
He is survived by Gloria Jordan Madden, his life mate for 54 years; their children, Kay and Ken Irby of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Claire and E. A. Pope of Columbia, Mississippi, and Dan and Susanne Madden of Arcadia. Grandchildren are Caroline Irby, Nathan Irby, Seth Irby, Anna Madden (and fiance' Dan Rasmussen), and Luke (and Katy) Madden. Nephews are Al Madden and wife Glenda of Simsboro, Louisiana, and Ray Madden and wife Diane of Ruston, Louisiana.
A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church of Arcadia at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, 2002.
