In 1924 he set up his law practice which continued for over 25 years with the exception of the years 1943-1945 when he was an assistant to Congressman Hays. For a time, Barnard was a law partner of Judge Harper E. Harb, now deceased, until the judge retired. On occasion, Barnard acted as special judge for Harb when the jurist was unable to hold court. Barnard later formed a partnership with his first cousin Linwood L. Brickhouse, now deceased. Barnard's legal practice was confined largely to probate work of which he was considered an authority.
