- Mrs. Shepard's brother, Thomas Greenhill, which named ?her two children. John and Rebeckah Shepherd."
The estate of Thomas Greenhill caused some controversy, hence the records concerning it are informative. His will , dated 16 July 1653, refers to lands he had recently purchased ? of my Brother John Shepherd and Rebeckah his wife,? and debts owing for the purchase ? of my sister her part in sd. Lands?; and provides for his mother Rebeckah Adams and her four Adams children as well as for his sister Rebeckah Shepherd and her two children. Testimony taken in connection with settlement of the estate shows that Samuel Greenhill, his wife and son Thomas, came to New England in 1634 , and that Samuel Greenhill's widow had married [for her third husband] Jeremy Adams, On 4 Aug. 1654, John Shepherd gave a receipt to ?my loving Unkel, Gregory Winterton,? for £34 received of ?my Brother Thomas Greenhill for Lands I sold him,? Later, calling himself John Shepherd of Cambridge, cooper, with his wife Rebecca he gave a power of attorney to Jeremy Adams of Hartford to collect from the executors what was still owing on the account of the land Thomas Greenhill had bought from Rebecca Shepherd his sister; this was witnessed by Edward Shepherd and John Blackman. Distribution of the estate had not been
completed by 11 Feb. 1679, and as the executors had died, Sergeant John Shepherd was appointed administrator with the will annexed. [Hartford Probate; see Manwarings Digest, 1: 119-21.]
