Salem Cemetery

"This is a large well kept cemetery in the Salem community and next to the Salem Baptist Church. There were 1063 markers with two of them having a death date of 1861. They were J.R. Martin who died April 16, 1861 and L. Nelson in 1861. The cemetery was surveyed by Sammy Tise on September 15, 1985 and October 26, 1985.

A sign in front of the church shows it was established July 14, 1857. A sign over the front gate of the cemetery reads: In memory of Mr. and Mrs. A. harless. A marker inside the cemetery reads: Dedicated to the memory, valor and generosity of Joel Ponton, Jr., 1842-1927; son of the Lavaca County pioneer settler, physician and minister, Joel Ponton, Sr.; Veteran Co. D, 2nd Texas Calvary, and its campaigns. Donor, March 31, 1881; tract of two acres for cemetery, Salem Cemetery."
