Town Hall speakers fired up

In what seemed more like a pep rally than a town hall meeting, more than 100 speakers shared blatantly that they want a brand new South Park Middle School, not a renovated school.

South Park Middle School

BISD Board of Trustees last fall promised the community to hear from them about whether they wanted a renovated or new school prior to moving forward with the construction at South Park. The meeting was the South Park community's opportunity to express their desires to the Board. While one speaker

did request the Board maintain the main South Park Building and build a new school on the rest of the property, all other speakers overwhelmingly expressed their desire for a new school.

Marvin Daniels, vice president of Parsons, the company awarded the $388 million bond project management, told the audience to renovate South Park would cost about 25% more than to tear it down and build an all new school.

Amidst students brandishing posters and banners and parents exclaiming they want a new school, the town hall meeting ended with a very clear message from parents and community leaders in the South Park area. A renovated school is unacceptable to them.
