BISD board not so popular

We hope the governor will understand. We hope he will not be offended if Beaumont residents don't get too excited about "School Board Recognition Month."

That is what Gov. Rick Perry has proclaimed for January, but we don't anticipate much celebrating in Beaumont. Fact is, many Beaumont residents are downright disappointed with their school board.

That's why, among other things, there is a move to change two of the seven districts from single-member to at-large representation. A petition drive calling for that change has fallen short, netting only about a third of the signatures needed.

Still, when more than 4,000 voters put their names down on paper, it's a message that must be acknowledged.

Board members need to understand that many of their constituents are not happy with the jobs they are doing and the direction of the district. They need to do something to change those attitudes.

January, "School Board Recognition Month." February, "Black History Month" In Beaumont that is redundant!

BISD now has some company, the HARDIN-JEFFERSON SCHOOL BOARD. They too have decided to do what is right in their own eyes. Never mind the taxpayer. They need to read the last paragraph in this article. Because as of now, they ca'nt be trusted, and wo'nt be for a long time after the stuff they pulled.

Surely the Moms of the BISD community can prove that this is a woman's world . . . and secure the maximum number of signatures needed to send the message that the children of the community ARE important . . . important to the level of securing a representative BISD school board that is responsible, caring and involved with enthusiasm and integrity . . . whether the petition drive is taken to the grocery stores, the shopping centers, public buildings, FORD Park or Rogers Park . . . it can be done . . . and it should be done . . . one door at a time . . . or one apartment complex at a time. . . . create an event, have a petition signing party. . . . invite a band, invite two bands. . . . get others involved. . . challenge the community. . . . speak up and sign up. . . . four thousand signatures is a modest start.
