BISD board should accept judge's ruling on South Park school

The bitter battle over the old South Park High School has gone on long enough. Judge Bob Wortham's ruling on Friday should be accepted - and we would have said the same had his decision gone the other way.

The Beaumont ISD school board should drop any plans to appeal Wortham's ruling. Above all, it should not go ahead and demolish the building by using funds not generated by the 2007 bond issue, as it has previously indicated. Even though that might be technically legal, it would violate the spirit of Wortham's ruling and flout prevailing community sentiment. No more tax dollars meant for education should be spent on lawyers.

The school board has no one else to blame for this predicament. Before the bond issue, printed and spoken words assured South Park graduates that their beloved school would not be torn down. If district officials had said what they meant and meant what they said, this costly legal battle would have never occurred.

The school board should sit down with South Park grads and work out a reasonable compromise. As we have said many times, the district could preserve the facade or shell of the structure and still build a modern school building behind or within it. v That might cost a little more, but it would close this wound and allow the district to move forward.

It is time for school board members to swallow their pride and show leadership. The last thing Beaumont needs is for this dispute to drag on in the courts for several more years, creating bitter divisions within the school district that might never heal.

People that cannot be constructive, have no business destroying things! Learn about your history before you decide to cast it aside, http://www.lamar.edu/newsevents/articles/221_1122.htm We cannot afford to build buildings like that anymore, so why demolish it?

By the way, this is the best editorial in a long time. Too bad BISD board members won't read it and listen to you and the citizen's that elected them.

I think it's time for BISD to do the right thing and move on. Plenty of other options have been offered. It's NOT about winning, it's about what's RIGHT!

It would be ideal if people could learn from the bad things that happened, come together, and make all future BISD decisions for the benefit of the students and community. Perhaps this will come about when pigs fly over a frozen Hell.
