Fox-4 - Homepage 3/31 Judge Delays Making His Order Final In South Park Reported by: Angel San Juan Wednesday, March 31 2010 It seems like a never-ending saga that still doesn't have a resolution. Jefferson County state district judge Bob Wortham was scheduled to make his ruling on South Park Middle School final on Wednesday. But he's delayed doing that another 75 days. Still the Beaumont school district attorney says she's going to tell the school board to go ahead and tear the school down. She says the district can proceed as early as Thursday. Two months ago, Judge Wortham ruled that the district could not tear down South Park using bond money. In 2007, voters passed the bond to build new schools including a new South Park. Supporters of the school said they were mislead into believing if they voted for the bond, the district wouldn't demolish the school. In light of the judge's ruling, the school board planned on still demolishing South Park using separate funds that aren't bond money. However, the attorney trying to save the school building, Mike Getz, filed a motion asking the judge to modify his order to say the school couldn't be demolished at all. Thursday, the judge decided not rule on Getz's motion. He says he wasn't going to grant it, but he was just going to let it expire. In essence that delays a final order for 75 days. But school district attorney Melody Chappell says the board will most likely proceed with demolition. SETX-Homepage Judge Delays Making Final Decision |
