Beaumont ISD board members approved the hiring of Allco Construction to complete the demolition of South Park Middle School, should a judge approve it.
The fate of South Park Middle School lies in the hands of State District Judge Bob Wortham who is expected to make a decision next month.
In attendance Thursday night was South Park P.T.A. President David Pete who has been very vocal about tearing down South Park Middle School. Also in attendance was Beaumont Heritage Society's attorney Mike Getz.
Getz gave a three minute presentation to the board in which he compared South Park to a high school in Washington. Both schools were built in 1923, but Getz says the school in Washington decided it was more cost-effective to renovate than tear the school down.
Getz showed illustrations of the school and what it looked like after renovations. The estimated cost for a new South Park Middle School is $43 million, but Getz says the school can be renovated for half the money. Still, parents and community members of South Park say the kids need a new school.
There were a couple of South Park Middle School parents who spoke to the board. Many of them talking about rats and mice running throughout South Park Middle School.
But before the district can move forward with renovations or construction,a ruling must first come from Judge Bob Wortham.

BISD can't restrain itself from tearing down the main building of the ISD that saved them from extinction. I hope and pray that Judge Wortham sees fit to save South Park for future generations and Lamar historians.

Still, why would the district spend time on this matter when it is still under consideration? They sure seem to move fast on the things that they deem important, regardless of the taxpayers' will. A $44 million pest control plan sounds eerily akin to a $1 million scoreboard, no?
