Your piece of historical South Park awaits you. Sort of.

The Beaumont school district will distribute what memorabilia it has on April 17 from 8 a.m. to noon - or until most items are gone - to people interested in getting a piece of the school building being demolished by contractors.

Today is the last day to reserve things, and those interested should call the district, (409) 617-5200, for more information.

Certain items will be set aside for the handful of people who requested them on the school district's Web site last fall. The online solicitation to reserve blackboards, light covers, doorknobs and auditorium seats garnered fewer than 10 returned forms, she said.

Since that first list was posted online, though, district officials have learned that some of the items were tainted with asbestos.

TG1960, they have priorities, you know...a fence for the safety of the public, setting aside those requested items, concern about asbestos contamination of the very neighborhood for whom they claim concern, observing the holy weekend...none of those are priorities. Ripping a big whole in the entrance of the historical landmark the moment they had a chance was more of a priority. They do have the ability to do many good things but they choose not to.

So BISD had requests for items like blackboards last summer, but failed to pull them out of the building before they started remediation? That just shows that they really had no intention of honoring those requests. Timwopel - I know you think it's funny, but those people who took the time to fill out the forms and send them in, should have received those items. If it was only 10 people like BISD says, then it really should have been very little effort on their part. This would have gone a long way for the district to show that they really did have a heart. Good publicity is something they could have used about now. I find it hard to believe that there aren't a few chalkboards to give to those who requested them.

Asbestos remediation, licensed electricians, maintenance, open meetings....who needs them? Remember, according to the neighborhood spokes women, "we don't care 'bout nobody!" BISD- "Come get your learn on!"

And does anyone know where will they be distributing what items they deign to make available to the public on April 17? The article doesn't say.

Asbestos inside buildings is usually only a problem when major remodeling or demolition occurs, as it just stays inside the walls having little impact otherwise unless disturbed (which is why all existing buildings didn't have to rip out all asbestos insulation once people realized the concerns about it). It seems likely that if anything people could request (for the very brief unadvertised time the request had been an option to people) would be "tainted with asbestos", it would be because BISD, Ambush Demolition, and/or other entities involved in this atrocious demolition, negligently failed to use proper asbestos remediation/abatement procedures, and negligently failed to remove all the salvageable items before disturbing the asbestos. It's not as if plumbing pipes were on the list.

The request "list" was posted online for exactly two days in the summer while the injunction hearing was ongoing. Yep, sounds completely fair and above-board to me. ~eyeroll~

Doorknobs tainted with asbestos? If some of the residents were smart in that neighborhood they'd scoop up some of that dust that's settling on their front porch. A little dust and one of Beauments sleaziest lawyers and they'll be able to afford a nice home in the West end.
