4/2 Demolition Of South Park Begins

After a legal battle that lasted several months, bulldozers are sealing the fate of South Park Middle School.

The building that many consider historic is being demolished on Good Friday.

This is happening despite a judge not giving a final order in the case that was held to decide the school's fate.

State District Judge Bob Wortham didn't rule on a motion filed by the attorney who was trying to save South Park.

In essence, that would have extended the case another 75 days.

But the school board acted based on the judge's decision two months ago.

At that time, he ruled that the district couldn't use school bond money to demolish the school.

So the district is getting the funds from elsewhere.

The cost is over $100,000.

Wortham strongly criticized the district and superintendent, Dr. Carrol Thomas, in a list of facts and findings.

He said Thomas had been dishonest, and that the board had violated the Open Meetings Act.
