A hearing set for Tuesday before a Jefferson County district judge could represent a key turning point in an effort to save the former South Park High School building from demolition.

A temporary restraining order issued July 1, 2009 preventing the building’s demolition remains in place. The order was issued after it was determined that the school district may not have followed proper protocol in scheduling demolition for a building that has an existing historical marker.

A request by The Beaumont Heritage Society to stop the demolition has bounced between 58th District Court Judge Bob Wortham and 136th Civil District Court Judge Milton Shuffield. The hearing will finally take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. before Judge Wortham.

The building is the former home of South Park High School and most recently a middle school with the same name. The Beaumont Independent School District has slated the building for demolition so that it can carry out plans to replace it. The new school would retain the name “South Park” and would be part of a multi-million dollar bond construction project.
