A district court judge is siding with those who want to stop the Beaumont Independent School District from demolishing the former South Park High School.

Michael Seiden has a report.

58th District Court Judge Bob Wortham announced his decision late Monday afternoon. in his ruling, the judge said that taxpayers are entitled to sue BISD in an effort to stop them from demolishing the school.

South Park High School was slated to be replaced with a new facility as part of the district's $389 million bond that voters passed in November of 2007. Supporters of keeping the old school rallied against the district, claiming their arguments to keep the school intact were largely ignored.

Judge Wortham's order stated BISD distributed pamphlets that said the bond did not call for the destruction of the school. "If a government entity induces the voters to approve a bond issue by making certain representations about the issue, it is bound by those representations." the judge wrote in his ruling.

KBMT will have more on this story later in the evening.
