Bond Supporters Gather At BISD

Thursday, Aug 6, 2009 @10:16pm CST

A Beaumont school board meeting scheduled for Thursday night was canceled by a judge's order. Board members were set to decide what to do next in the South Park saga. But Judge Milton Shuffield ruled the meeting wasn't posted in proper time, and violated the Open Meetings Act. The district rescheduled it for Monday, but that didn't stop bond supporters from gathering outside the administration building. In a story you'll only see on Fox 4 and SETX Homepage.com, a few dozen people came out to say it's time to do the will of the people. Some of them had served on the committee that helped pass the 2007 bond. And it was decided that it would be best to demolish South Park and build a new school. They say that what voters decided shouldn't be undone in the court system. The co-chair of bond committee, Paul Brown, told Fox 4 News, "I think it's wrong, I think it's senseless. We're losing time, the bond issues's been passed by the citizens of Beaumont, so why tamper with this if you're concerned about the future." The bond supporters say the court-imposed delays are only costing taxpayers more money, and jeopardizing the well-being of students. Until the matter is resolved, South Park students will attend classes in portable buildings. School begins August 24th.
