Officer Suspended

KBTV is reporting that the BISD Police Department has suspended one officer and reprimanded another for sneaking off the job to take a personal car to a muffler shop in Nederland, Texas.

The Review first broke the story this morning - and BISD acted later in the afternoon. No comment was made by BISD other than to confirm the suspension and reprimand.

Secret Journey

Ya know....there are times we simply just want to drift away from a story that lands in our backyard like a thud. And we do not like to burn our friends in the police service - but God - when you are stupid....well?

There is a bunch of talk in the community from citizens and cops regarding the Beaumont Independent School District and the utter waste of money regarding their police department. In fact, depending on who you talk to in the cop shops - you will hear everything from the BISD police sleeping on the job to simply using their cruisers to do whatever they want.

We kind of ignored this talk. You know - there is some inner agency issues from time to time. So we just let it go.

But this one fell in our backyard.

This morning at 8:43 a.m. we got a series of emails from a cell phone friend of ours that send us pictures. We were kind of shocked at first - but then we got photos of a BISD patrol car smack in the middle of the city of Nederland. The unit was at a local muffler shop called "Duals Mufflers" at the corner of 23rd street and Nederland Avenue.

Our first thought? Well it must be a contract job on a cop car. But then two tips came in that said they saw a police officer drop off his private car and catch a ride in a patrol car.

The Review sent a staffer to the Duals Muffler shop with one of the pictures and got a plate. We ran the plate and got the name. From the name we verified the auto was an officer with the BISD police and it was his personal auto.

So we looked at the pictures and then made some calls. Sure enough - it was the officer - and his buddy in a BISD Patrol Car? Over 20 miles away in another city dropping off a personal car? On Government time? In a Government Police Car?

Here are the photos :

The Officer Post Dropping Auto Off

What does this all mean? Well nothing we guess. We are withholding the officers name because he may have had permission to do this. However, what it does do is brings up the question of how money is spent again at the BISD. From wanting to knock down perfectly good buildings to forming and hiring a police department that seemingly has time on duty to walk away from the job and get his ride fixed?

Taxpayers beware - millions are being wasted.

It is just another day in Jefferson County Texas. Where government is king. And you pay the king.

One Beaumont ISD police officer has been suspended and another reprimanded after a district investigation found both used a district vehicle for non-district purposes. Beaumont ISD spokeswoman Jessie Haynes, who spoke with The Enterprise by phone, said that it appears the two officers went to a Nederland repair shop, one in a district vehicle and the other in a personal vehicle. She did not know on what day the incident happened or if the officers were on district time. The district was alerted to the incident by media who learned about it from a local blogger. Haynes said the incident might have started innocently, but the use of the vehicle was not appropriate. "Our resources are not to be used except for BISD-related activity," she said.
