Subject: South Park High

Hi Doctor Teuscher,

I believe you may remember operating on my wife's (Michele Oglesbee) left shoulder some years ago.  Your expertise in repairing her condition brought her much relief.  I appreciate all you did for her.  She's doing well and it's all thanks to you.

Today, I would like to ask of you to contribute toward the relief of a building that needs some physical repair.  South Park High School is a fine historical structure that needs to simply be brought back up to par.

There are those who could care less what happens to that building.  There are those who would hasten to see it torn down and replaced.  There are also those who cherish that building as a piece of Beaumont history worthy of restoration and preservation.

Too many times folks turn their back on an opportunity to preserve history.  And, it's history that can save a community as well.  There's no doubt schools serve as anchors of neighborhood stability.  Pride is a component of that stability.  How many times have Texans mentioned the Alamo with pride?  There are South Park alumni all over the globe that today have a building that represents that same kind of pride.  If it is removed everyone loses.  Beaumont loses a historical monument to education and South Park loses the only building remaining in the area that represents community pride.

The building weathered hurricane Rita with little or no damage to the structure.  That speaks well of the integrity of the building's design and construction.  It just needs a maintenance make-over to tidy up the finer points of that majestic landmark.

So, I ask personally of you to consider and reconsider again preserving  a beautiful historical Beaumont landmark that means so much to so many who walked those hallways.  Today it's fate is destined by a group of which you are a major ingredient.  I hope and pray that you will help to save the South Park High building and all it represents for those who hold that place so near and so dear to their hearts.  It is a part of what makes us who we are today and why we struggle to preserve our past by giving it a future.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Jerry Oglesbee

Appreciate your comments. I am working on a plan to build a new South Park on a different site, allowing other groups to work on an alternative to demolition.
This will be discussed at tomorrow night's bond committee meeting that is open to the public.
