Subject: Question for you
Hello David,
My question for you is "How are we to interpret your reply to
Miriam Cade Nichols regarding the 3DI numbers?" I understood you to be the
"Co-Chair" of the Community Advisory Committee. Do I have my facts
wrong? I also understood, but correct me if I'm wrong, that you are a
physician? Do you treat your patients with as much impudence as
you have treated Mrs. Nichols? I certainly hope not.
Whatever were you thinking to admonish her for her genuine
assertion about a topic over which you are presiding? The community should
be able to know that their representatives are "gentlemen" and
"ladies"! You should have the utmost respect for people who
have a legitimate cause for which they are concerned and are
bringing to your attention.
As I read your reply to Mrs. Nichols' question about 3DI, I found
my eyes getting wider and wider with disbelief at your callous and frankly, rude
words to her. Seems to me that she is representing a group of people who
are trying to get a message to the Advisory Board and you, Doctor, are brushing
off her and those people with little more than a "Get your own money and get out
of my life!".
For that matter, the entire City of Beaumont should be disappointed
with the slovenly way this Committee has handled the Bond issue information, the
3DI estimates being found a bit high, etc, etc. Seems to me you'd be glad
somebody, anybody created enough noise to give you people a chance to take a
second look at the numbers before the residents of Beaumont voted on a Bond
Issue with incorrect dollar amounts for rebuilding, refurbishing, remodeling and
whatever else was in that proposal.
Your answer to Mrs. Nichols questions leads me to think that if you
perceive people aren't on your rung of the ladder, they're not worth
your time or thought. Those of us who are knocking on your door simply
would like to have an "audience" with the Committee. However, we're smart
enough to know that we'll be old and gray before that would happen, so we've
come to you with our concerns the best way we can. Now, you're slamming
the door in our faces. God help you, Sir!
The truth of the matter is that we are simply trying to give you
some input from the people in Beaumont who don't have a voice on your
Committee. Before your curt reply to Mrs. Nichols, I thought you and your
fellow Committee members would be glad to have some feedback from your
constituents since it's their money you'll be spending. I see now that I
was mistaken about your wanting that information.
By the way, you might want to check some of the graduates of
SPHS. They range from Congressman Nick Lampson, A Director of the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Judges, Doctors, Lawyers, Writers, Lamar University
Professors and their Assistants, CEO of Chairities and Food Banks; I could
go on and on, David.
You see, the South Park Community was good to us and helped us to
become who we are today. We're simply asking that you give the same
opportunity to a new generation of youngster and their families to grow and
learn in their own community. The facilities available to you are
certainly more readily used with a bit of refurbishing than to scrap the whole
campus, carry off all the debris, and start from the ground up. Even I,
not a rocket scientist, I admit, can figure that one out.
Better take stock, Doctor!
