Subject: Response letter to Teuscher's suggestion of fundraising for SP

Dear sirs and madams,
I asked Dr. Teuscher to forward the following letter to all who are involved in the SP issue and determined that perhaps it was more prudent that I forward it myself as I feel it is crucial while the bond issue is still in the planning stages.  My letter was written in response to his "suggestion" that those of us concerned should raise funds to refurbish the school, but it should suffice as once again my plea to all of you who have the power to make these critical decisions for our city and the SP community.
Below my letter I have included for clarity purposes his email to which I refer; and also below his email, again for clarity purposes, you will find the email that had elicited his response.

Sincerely,
Sherry

PS for Dr. Teuscher -- I apologize for sending this to you a second time, but I failed to address this in my first letter to you.  You stated to Miriam you were not sure what 3DI information she was referring to.  Here is the link to the pdf report that was posted on the Bond Committee web page:

Dr. Teuscher, since you cc'd me, I feel I can respond to your reply to Miriam.
First, I'd like to say that your response is quite curt and leaving the impression that you have no regard for how people of the South Park area or the alumni of the school feel about the situation.   We have been out in the community talking to the residents, gathering petitions and hearing their anger and concern at the thought of the school being either closed or torn down or replaced and the prospects of their children being bussed outside the community (re Bingman).  Saving the steps and building some structure behind it that conceivably matches the Pietzsch/MacArthur complex with no regard to preserving the historical value of design is hardly what people want to be the fate of that site.
I have written several letters to officials suggesting that SP become a high school again and I hope you have seen them.  If you have not, they are here, here, here, here and herePlease read them!  Even though that idea has not been discussed in a public arena, it's been amazing the number of current residents who have expressed to me that same desire from their own hearts and without my solicitation.  I ask that you give that plan a very serious consideration.  I would be most happy to converse with you on this proposal one-on-one if you ever have the time.
Closing Bingman is not going to help the community either.  Granted we need commerce in SP, but not at the expense of bussing young children to neighborhoods outside the community. If the schools leave, the people leave.
As far as the expense of the renovation, even in the reports I've seen say that renovation would be much less of an expense than replacement.  So, what the community is asking for is going to save taxpayers money, not just for the SP part of town, but would be of benefit to the overcrowding in other city schools thereby saving money there, too.  The insistence to spend big money for "new" just doesn't make sense when the people clearly want it restored.
As far as "digging deep into Greenie pockets," that comment really is beneath a man of your stature and position.   SP is not going to be restored to be a private school.  We are paying taxes to preserve and maintain our schools, which maintenance and preservation seems in serious question; and one wonders where or when accountability might come into play. But be that as it may, our taxes pay for these schools and our taxes will pay for the bond issue -- if it passes -- which at this rate, it doesn't seem likely unless it's approached with a much more conservative and sensible approach.  These taxes reach far enough into our "Greenie" pockets!
You can share this letter with whomever you like, and I do wish you would share it with your fellow bond committee members.  I also wish I could speak to each of you individually.  There's so much more to say.
Sincerely,
Sherry Moyer Sharp - SPHS-65

PS  For what it's worth, a little background of who I am, I was a charter student at Bingman in grade K in '52 and went all the way through the SP school system, as did my mother (class of '43) and my grandmother. My mother still lives in the house in SP they moved in in '51. My lineage has been in Southeast Texas beginning in 1829 and the Sparks brothers, Worthy and James, who initiated the establishment of the SP community in 1889, were my uncles, their sister being my great-great grandmother.

Miriam,

I'm not sure what 3DI information you are referring to. We asked the District to get some engineers to determine if the structure can be rehabilitated and how much it will cost. It is going to be very expensive no matter what.

How much have you raised in private donations for your SPHS preservation? It will be expensive, so I hope your alumni team has been successful in working on your fundraising and digging into those deep Greenie pockets.

David Teuscher, MD
