14. | William Stone was born about 1785 in Surry Co, North Carolina (son of Enoch Stone and Nancy Anthony); died before May 1858 in Surry Co, North Carolina. Other Events and Attributes:
- Census: 1850, Surry Co, North Carolina
- Will: May 1868, Surry Co, North Carolina
Notes:
Note by ~ss: There's two William Stones born in about 1785.
One is son of William Stone and married Nancy Denny,
and one is son of Enoch and Nancy who married Mary Gordon.
Dates of birth, marriages, and death are attributed to both. Even some researchers have them as the same William Stone with two wives.
More research is needed.
-------------
Although seven of the children listed below were named in William Stone's will, census records indicate that William and Mary may have actually had as many as nine children. In Charles H. Stone's book, "The Stones of Surry," he states that William and Mary had a daughter named Fannie who married Milton Flippin, but does not mention that they had a daughter named Nancy. 5 There is an older female who shows up in the 1830 federal census enumeration who was not listed on the 1820 census. Whether this female could be the Fannie Stone mentioned by Charles H. Stone, or whether the census enumeration is simply incorrect, is just not known at this time.
As far as the 1840 census is concerned, it indicates that William and Mary Stone had two more children between 1830 and 1840. Unfortunately, the 1840 census does not match up well with respect to some of the female children listed on the 1830 census.
Regardless of the above noted discrepancies, this write-up will reflect that in addition to the seven children listed in Williams' will, he and Mary had two other children, the youngest of whom I am fairly certain died at an early age.
NOTE: The offspring listed below as (male) or (female) were abstracted from available pre-1850 census records. These are also believed to be William and Mary's children, but have yet to be positively identified. The 1820 census of Surry County, North Carolina shows males 10001 - females 10001. The 1830 census of Surry County,North Carolina shows males 0210001 - females 201101. The 1840 census of Surry County, North Carolina shows males 10020001 - females 0102101.
