_________
Jefferson County and Beaumont in particular are where my Morgan's are
from. My GF Morgan was born in Hamshire and after returning to the area
in 1882 spent the remainder of his life there. My Dad was born in
Beaumont 22 Sept 1893 s/o O. A. Morgan & Alice Frezia (original spelling
Fruge' also spelled Fregia, Frugia, Fruger, Frusha etc.).
My GF Morgan also applied for a Confederate Pension 5 June 1941 as
Oliver Alvin Morgan age 93 born August 12, 1847. No proof of service so
the pension was rejected.
The statement read: "Before me, a Notary Public, on this day personally
appeared Oliver A. Morgan, commonly known as Bud Morgan, who being by me
first duly sworn, on his oath says: That he was born on the 12th day of
August, 1847. That hs joined the Army in 1862 and served in what is
known as the Civil War and was discharged from the Army in July or July,
1865. That in the Civil War he served in Fates Battalion; that his
Captain was George W. O'Bryan; that his Major's name was McReynolds;
that his First Lieutenant was J. F. Keith. That this affiant was a
butcher during the war, providing meat for the soldiers; That his
associates were Captain Dick Dowlen, Jake Dallier, Oscar Hayes, Mark
Wiese, J. B. Chambles, Alvin Stephenson, B. J. Johnson and Uriah
Johnson. That he served with Martin Hebert, who was a member of the
Calvery. That he was in the Battle of Sabine Pass when the Confederates
blew up the boats and put the "Yankees" to flight. That others with
whom he served were Jack Chriswell and Dan Daniels. That this affiant
worked under Jim McCall and John McCall, who were in charge of the
Butcher Department for the soldiers."
The two witnesses to the affidavit were: M. G. GALLIER & W. A. HEBERT,
SR.
Needless to say my GF Morgan was about four or five years old at this
time.

Hi Sherry,
My grandfather O. A. (Oliver Alvin) "Bud" Morgan couldn't or wouldn't give his correct age for reasons known only to him. He was 2 on the 1860 Sabine Pass census making his birth year 1858 while his death certificate listed his year of birth 8/12/1867, Hamshire, Jefferson Co., TX. I have two typed copies of his obit's from the Beaumont Enterprise, Sept 30, 1943, pg 7:1 & Beaumont Journal, Sept 30, 1943, pg :1, the informant was Mrs. H. W. (Florence) Brinchman (dgt).
Someone had a vivid imagination as to his life story. Stated he served as sheriff of Jefferson County a half-century ago, patrolled the Mexican border as a Texas Ranger in the early days, and his great-grandfather was one of the first landowners in the part of the Mexican state of Coahuila. Claimed to have been one of the first to congratulate Captain Lucas on bringing in the Lucas gusher in 1901, tales of breaking wild horses for Confederate soldiers in the Civil War and was a Confederate soldier (he wasn't old enough and was denied a pension for that reason).

*I believe the error and confusion with how my grandfather is listed on his death certificate and obit's listed the name of his son "James Andrew" or "J. A" or "Buddy" that no one bothered to correct. Ellen Eliza (Johnson) Morgan is buried next to my grandfather. Their son J. A. (James Andrew "Buddy" Morgan may also be buried there.
Also mentioned in GF Morgan's obit was a sister, Mrs. Renie PERRY of Crowley, LA. that I've never been able to find.
My grandmother Mrs. Alice (Frugia) MORGAN married Charles A SEGELHURST 4 Oct 1916 at Beaumont. She was born 6 May 1868 Johnsons Bayou, LA and died 7 Dec 1921 buried Magnolia Cemetery. She was 14 when she married GF Morgan and he was 24.
More later,
Love ya,
Ruth

Subject: Happy New Year!
I wish you a Happy New Year too! Forgot to tell you in the latest issue of Yellowed Pages they had printed a newspaper article from the Beaumont Enterprise published around 1941 and it was about Uncle Bud Morgan, my grandfather! The old fart lied about his age saying he was 96 when he wasn't. Then said he supplied beef for Dick Dowling's men during the civil war when he wasn't but about 6. Said he was born on Moise Broussard ranchstead near the village of Hamshire (this is true). Stated his great grandfather was one of the first American landholders in what was the Mexican state of Coahuila (this is true - Bennett Blackman). Said he was the father of 17 children (I know of 13) and after the death of his mother Moise Broussard took him in. That his father lived to be 104 years and eight days old (not true). To top everything off he said his grandfather Dr. Archie Morgan was the first man to settle on Morgan's Point and it was named for him. That the land has never been transferred to anyone. His grandfather was named Archibald and may have been called Archie but I don't believe he was a doctor nor was Morgan's Point named after him. I'll have to give him credit he told a good story and I guess in the 40's it made good reading.
