Incidentally, I'm descended from the China Renfro who married John Word.
She would be my ggg grandmother. She was daughter of James Renfro and Charity Huff (Hough). James being the son of Moses and Hannah Renfro (dau. of Willia m Renfro & Eliz. Cheney), and Moses being son of Joseph Renfro and Mary Owens (Randolph). I've run across several other cousin marriages like this,, and quite a few where brother & sister married sister & brother,etc. Wonder we're not all simple minded! James Renfro and Charity Huff were my 6th great-grand parents. The pictures of their gravesites were taken in Pineville, Bell Co, Kentucky. It used to be called Cumberland Ford. James ran the ferry across the Ford and was also the tollkeeper for the Wilderness Road from 1822 until his death in 1835. They had 12 children. Charity died 1831 and James remarried to Dorcas Collier in 1832. They had one daughter, Mary Anne. (James was 70 at the time!) Their tombstones and that of their daughter, Mary (Polly) Renfro Moss were moved to the Moss plot in Pineville, due to flooding of the original si te. I am not sure if the bodies were moved. There is a small park at the site of Cumberland Ford, where their brick house was (destroyed during Civil War) . It now contains only illegible sandstone markers, which were for slaves. (J ames had 23 slaves). He was killed in a lightning storm while out searching for Swift's Silver Mine.

Laura Casey Genforum March 2, 2002 Moses Renfrow, son of William Renfrow, Sr. purchased property in Maury Co., Tn. His son Shelton Renfrow, m. Elizabeth Goforth July 8, 1822. Moses died and is buried in Tippah Co., Ms. His father, William paid taxes on 100 acres of land in Maury Co. William Renfro died in 1830 at 96 and buried outside of Culleoka, Tn. Shelton and Elizabeth Renfrow had 8 children. Their 5th child, Mary Elizabeth b.1832 m. Isaac James on July 6, 1853. By 1854 they along with this line of the Renfrow's moved to Ms., which is where most of them live to date. "Renfro Revelations & Relations by Roy E. Renfro, Jr. shows William Renfro, Sr. will. Have copy. Note: After Moses and Shelton, the name Renfrow was always spelled with a "W". I have some documentation that has Shelton down without the " W", but on family documents he used the W.

It is recorded that in 1758, Moses furnished provisions to the Virginia State Militia to pay for protection from the Indians. In 1772 he was commissioned a Captain in the Militia.

The early Rentfros were of record as being predominately Baptist. Of this family Moses who first married his cousin, Hanna Rentfro; Jesse who married his cousin, Susanna Rentfro (sister of Hannah); and Isaac were all Baptist ministers of record in Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky. In Jesse's case, Tennessee.
As in most early families in Virginia, Renfro cousins seemed to marry as a rule rather than as an exception. Also brothers and sisters from one family would marry brothers and sisters from another unrelated family.

Ordination of Moses Renfro:

William Rentfro, son of John and his second wife, Tomasin Simmons, was born in James City Co, VA. (Some researchers claim he was born in NC. It is very possible, the family lived on the "dividing line") He married Elizabeth Ann Cheney in James City, VA. The Rentfro's were important people in VA. They owned much land and held positions of Mayor, Officers in the Militia, Superintendent of Elections, were land and road surveyors and were sheriff's and magistrates.
