    Surname Moyer

Anglicanized form of German Mayer with an excrescent -s. From the Middle High German word "meiger," meaning "higher or superior," often used for stewards of landholders or great farmers or leaseholders. Meier and Meyer are used more often in Northern Germany, while Maier and Mayer are found more frequently in Southern Germany. The surname MYERS or MYER is either of German or Brittish origin, depending upon the country of the particular family. The German origin of the surname MYERS has the meaning "steward or bailiff," as in the magistrate of a city or town.

German and Dutch: variant of Meyer
German and Dutch: from Middle High German meier, a status name for a steward, bailiff, or overseer, which later came to be used also to denote a tenant farmer, which is normally the sense in the many compound surnames formed with this term as a second element. Originally it denoted a village headman (ultimately from Latin maior 'greater', 'superior').

It seems the Pennsylvania Moyers tended to contain Mennonintes. (see webpage link below)

In Europe the name Meyer was apparently never prominent in Mennonite circles. Delbert L. Gratz lists Meyer as an Aargau family that left Switzerland because of the severe persecution in the 18th century. The name appeared in a list of Anabaptists in Montbéliard, Württemberg (now in France) in 1759. A Meyer family from Alsace located in Wayne County, Ohio, in 1872. Elmer Meyer was a deacon at Pleasant Hill, Ohio. J.C. Meyer was a professor of history at Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. Willard Moyer was a preacher in the Conservative Mennonite Church at Pigeon, Michigan.
The Hutterian Chronicle records the selection of a preacher named Hannss Meyer in 1632 and his ordination three years later.
