"Captain Johnson of Bolivar peninsula, who last Saturday, together with Mr. R.H. Slaughter and others oganized a relief committee at the above place for the Sabine sufferers sailed over to Galveston yesterday morning.....
We visited all the surrounding country and part of the pass, and found that the damage and destruction were greater in the country than in the city proper. The first house we came to was Mr. Brad Johnson's place. There was hardly anything left of it to tell the tale. The fences had disappeared completely and all the trees and crops were totally annialated. Brad Johnson was raised at the Pass and is about forty-five years old, and stated that the Sabine blow was the severest hurricane he had ever witnessed. Moise Broussard's house was situated just next to Brad Johnson's and had also suffered more or less. A tank which had been scraped out for stock watering purposes was discovered here with the only fresh water left at Sabine Pass. Out of a total of eleven hundred cattle, owned by Mr. Broussard, which were pasturing at the time of the storm five or six miles this side of the Pass, not one animal escaped he waters. The search for dead bodies is still progressing. A young lady was fished from the jetty works on Saturday who was supposed to be Miss Annie McCall, although the body was not positively identified as such. The body of Homer King still remains undiscovered. "

JOHNSON, BENJAMIN

JOHNSON, BENJAMIN (1815?1872). Benjamin Johnson, soldier, early settler, and son of Moses Johnson and Mary Ann Roberts was born on June 8, 1815, near Edgerly (in present-day Calcasieu Parish), Louisiana. He moved to Texas in 1832 and settled at Jefferson Municipality (present-day Bridge City in Orange County) on Cow Bayou.

Johnson volunteered to fight in the Texas Revolution and enlisted in the Texas Army on November 12, 1835, under Capt. Willis H. Landrum?s Company. He participated in the Grass Fight and the siege of Bexar later that year. Johnson was given an honorable discharge on January 1, 1836, at the Alamo. After learning of the fall of the Alamo, he re-enlisted in Capt. James Gillaspie?s Company, in the Second Regiment of Texas Volunteers under Col. Sidney Sherman?s command. On April 21, Sherman formed part of the regiment of the left wing and fought in the battle of San Jacinto. On June 30, Johnson served a third enlistment as second sergeant in Capt. John G. W. Pierson?s Company at Washington. He received an honorable discharge on September 30, 1836.

After service, Johnson received a donation of 320 acres of land for having served in the army. He returned to Jefferson, where on January 24, 1838, he received a 1,440-acre headright from the Jefferson County Board of Land Commissioners.

On April 24, 1838, Johnson married Rachel Garner, daughter of Bradley Garner, Sr., and Sarah Rachel Harmon. Rachel was from a family of military service. Her father fought in the Battle of New Orleans, and her brothers David, Isaac, and Jacob Garner fought at the Grass Fight and the Siege of Bexar. Her brother-in-law Claiborne West was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Soon after marriage Johnson and his new wife settled in Sabine Pass on a farm of his sister-in-law Sarah Garner McGaffey. Records show that Benjamin and Rachel Johnson were one of the earliest settlers in Sabine Pass along with John McGaffey, Thomas Courts, and Jacob Garner. Johnson then appeared before the land commissioners and received an additional headright of 3,000 acres, granted to married men. He and Rachel became the parents of at least eight sons and two daughters.

On July 7, 1838, Johnson was granted an additional 640 acres of donation land for having fought at the battle of San Jacinto. That same year, he was certified as one of fifty-seven jurors to serve in the Jefferson County courts. He was elected a county commissioner on December 2, 1852. He and his family were charter members of the second Baptist Church of Jefferson County.

Rachel Johnson died in 1856. On July 4, 1861, Johnson married Matilda Myers, whom he had employed as his housekeeper. Later that year in August, Benjamin Johnson joined his three sons, Bradley, John, and Uriah Johnson, and served under Ben McCulloch in the Confederate Army. In addition to his military and public service, Johnson was a farmer, stockman, and patriarch. Benjamin Johnson died at the age of fifty-seven at Sabine Pass on October 13, 1872, and was buried at the Johnson family plot at the Sabine Pass Cemetery in Jefferson County. A Texas Historical Marker was erected in his honor in 1972.

Sabine Pass Cemetery - The oldest continually used cemetery in Jefferson County, This graveyard has served the citizens of the Sabine Pass area since the 1840s. The earliest documented grave is that of a 12-year-old John A. Dashiell, son of William V.C. and Mary Dashiell, who died on August 27, 1847. The large site now known as Sabine Pass Cemetery represents a combination of five formerly distinct burial grounds. Included in what was once called "The Colored Peoples Cemetery" is the unmarked grave of 108-year-old Louis Williams. Born a slave in Mississippi in 1813, Williams died on June 23, 1921. Among the burials in this historic graveyard are those of many distinguished military veterans. Able Coffin (1792-1862) and Burwell Jackson (1783-1864) fought in the War of 1812. Jacob Harmon Garner (1814-1887), Benjamin Johnson (1815-1872) and Niles F. Smith (1800-1858) were Texas Revolution veterans. Soldiers and sailors from both the Union and Confederate forces of the Civil War also are interred here. The two Union sailors Patrick Ferlin and Albert W. Marshall, died of wounds sustained during the offshore naval encounter on January 21, 1863, while serving on the ship Morning Light. A number of Confederate veterans rest in the cemetery, as does Kate Dorman, dubbed "the heroine of Sabine Pass" for her assistance of the southern troops. A number of graves have been specially marked with military or state historical markers. Maintained by Jefferson County and cared for by local volunteer organizations, the Sabine Pass Cemetery remains in use by citizens of the area. Its historic gravestones and monuments provide a unique component of the cultural history of Jefferson County. (1999)

Don't have exact date, but new appraisers were appointed Nov 29, 1847; so previous to that. He was listed as a principal with Thos H Lewis & John B (x his mark) Pevito security.

1880: Jacob Garner age 66 states parents born in VA. Also listed with them are Rachel, age 14, and Othneil, age 4, goddaughters.
(Yellowed Pages show marriage date of 13 June 1843) He was the son of Bradley Isaac GARNER SR, and Rachel HARMON, born in 1814. Jacob's sister was Rachel Garner who married Benjamin Johnson.
BRADLEY ISAAC GARNER, SR., came to Tx, from Louisiana, in 1828 (1850 Census) According to First Settlers of Jefferson Co, Texas by Gifford White, Land Grants in Texas: 130th Applicant: Bradley Garner took and Subscribed to the oath requiredy the 12th Secretary of Land Law that he emigrated to Texas in 1829. It was proven that he was a citizen of Texas at the date of the Declaration of Independence by the oath of Richard Ballew and Wilson W. Gill.
David Garner was possibly Bradley's brother, even though there were 12 years difference in their ages. David GARNER married Matilda Hampshire in 1839 in Jefferson Co, and their children were Emily, born 1840; Jacob, born 1841; David G, born 3; Clairborne, born 1844; Anna, born 1845; Martha, born 1847; John, born 1848; and Alexander, born 1850.

Listed in First Settlers of Jefferson Co, Texas by Gifford White, Land Grants in Texas 47th Applicant: JACOB GARNER took and Subscribed to the oath required by the 12th Secretary of Land Law that he emigrated to Texas in 1829. It was provhat he was a citizen of Texas at the date of the Declaration of Independence by the oath of Clairborn West and BRADLEY GARNER.
The census states Jacob had come to Texas in 1825 (age 11) with David Garner (born in 1807; i.e. 18 years old). Land Grant records state Bradley came in 1828 and Jacob swore he emigrated in 1829, witnessed by Bradley.

John McCall married Martha Garner Jan 1869 months before this census; so curious she is not counted here. Mary, age 6, and Alzina Hayes, 12, living in his household, are children of Martha's uncle James Hayes, Jr. (her mother's brother). Their mother, Emily Burrell Hayes, died previous to this census and relatives took in the young children. Another Hayes child, Nancy, 8 yrs old, was taken in by Jamss McCall.
Jacob Garner took in Matilda, 10 yrs old (my ancestor).
Marie Johnson, living with John McCall, is James Hayes, Jr.'s mother. After J.H. Sr. died, she married Francis Gallier, Jr - who had also passed by this time.

Died:
For a long time, I believed that Garner died of pneumonia due to much exposure to the winds and rain (from intense hurricane on Oct 12, 1886) but Bill Quick has determined that Garner lived on for about four months months after the storm, and that his actual death date was February 27, 1887.

After returning home to his father's cabin on Cow Bayou, now in Orange County, Jacob Garner next appeared in recorded history as a freeholder, subject to jury duty, in Jefferson County in January, 1837.22 On November 29, 1838, Jacob H. Garner married Matilda Hayes (b. January 13, 1817-d. May 14, 1895) at Beaumont, the 25th marriage license issued in the county courthouse records.(23) She was the daughter of James Hayes, a native of Virginia, and Augusta Matilda Smith, who were married in the Catholic Church, Parish of St. Landry, Military Post of Opelousas, Louisiana, in June, 1815.(24)

Debbie has in her tree that he might be son of Burrell Johnson, 1755-Dec 1823 Edgefield, South Carolina and Marie Joesphe Lord, 1755 KY - 15 Jun 1785 St. Jacques, Quebec, Canada, and suggests he had a brother Francis 1777-1798.

"Jesse" came from a guess that the abstractor made of the name of Ann's father at the time of her marriage to Thomas Court in the St. Landry marriage license #51. The notation shows _ _ _ e & Nancy Roberts with "Jesse" filled in above the dashes.

Wit: Robert, Susanne (Benjamin & Elizabeth Cole) m 20 Sept 1796 Jacob Welsh. Also Wit John Moore, Andrew Walsh, Robins.

On August 7, 1803, they had all their children (first four born at this time) baptized at the same time.

According to the 1820, St.Landry, census, there were residents counted that do not show up later. They were two boys under 10 yrs old; three men age 26-45; one girl age 10 to 16; and two girls ages 16-26.

Found on GenWeb Pennsylvania that a John Roberts and John Lyons emigrated from Cork, Ireland on the brig "Freemason" entering America on 27 Dec. 1764. Possible connection??

Dianne Peoples: As far as your question about Moses and James L. being brothers. Iv'e never heard this info before. In Gen Erbon Wise's book, Wise Footsteps from England and Ireland, p.57, he thinks that Moses and Francis Johnson were the sons of Burrell Johnson. Burrell was b.c1755,
SC. I will warn you that some don't hold this book in high regard.

LV Hayes: Her opinion of Wise's book is certainly on the money. It contains errors and scrambled data on many families. I understand that a revision is to be published some time this year, but I haven't picked up word of Wise checking with anybody, so I don't know if it's going to be any better.

DP: Houston Tracy Jr. tells me that he thinks Moses traveled with Rev Joseph Willis from SC to Natchz District c1794.

LVH: Yeah, there's a tale going around that Willis led like Moses a whole caravan of families from SC (some versions have NC) to LA. I don't buy it. The Pevoto book mentions documents that may locate Moses in the Natchez area in 1794. There's much uncertain about this family, but the eldest daughter, Isabelle, was baptized at Opelousas in 1803, so Moses got to St Landry Parish by then. He's not on the 1810 census, however.

DP: The 1860 Rapides Parish Census states that Moses' son, John L. was born c1802 KY. He was, however, baptized in St. Landry Parish, LA in 1803. It seems that the more you know, the more confused you get.

LVH: John L. also appears to be on the 1826 Atascosita census where his birth place is also identified as KY.

I have researched the information that you supplied on your Johnson lineage.
Everything that I was able to come up with agreed with the data that you supplied, but I was unable to tie you in to the JEANSONNE branch. I did locate a Moise Johnson (born 1755). He was the son of Jean-Baptiste (Joseph) Johnson, Sr. and Marie-Josephe Laure. No record of place of
birth, but he was probably born in Canada. I don't know if this is the same Moses "Jesse" Johnson that you referred to.
You should probably check with a cousin of mine who has done a lot of research on the Johnson/Jeansonne family. In fact he has a book out titled GENEALOGY OF THE JOHNSON AND RELATED FAMILIES . His name is Floyd E. Johnson Sr. and his address is:

An interesting character. Born the son of a white plantation owner and an indian slave in Robeson Co, NC, he became the first protestant minister and founded the first protestant church west of the Mississippi or at least
that's how the tale goes. He did help found a number of churches in southwestern LA, including the Big Woods church near Edgerly, LA in 1827.
But he also owned slaves, married at least 4 wives, and sired 19 known children.

The documentation which indicates that Moses and Nancy Roberts both may have been in the Natchez area circa 1794, not yet married to one another. Of course, they could have made a trip up river to KY. As I said before,
the documentation is spotty and somewhat conflicting.

LV: Do you have access at your library to McBee's _Natchez Court Records, Vol.
II_? If so, check pages 245-6 from Book F. This source is identified in Laura Dingle Ewing's Peveto book, which would be another good source for you if you can also find it in the library. It's long out of print.

Laura quotes passages from McBee which reveal in effect that a Moses Johnson was living with a Mrs. John Green, whose husband had left the country for parts unknown. These records, which may date to 1794, relate to a squabble between Moses and a Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts, whose husband, Jonathan had enlisted in the military and not come back. Mrs. Green had invited Mrs. Roberts to stay with her while ole Moses was gone to New Orleans, and when he returned, Moses charged Elizabeth for bed and board
and confiscated her goodies until she payed. This led to the court action.
Also mentioned is that John Green had given Moses a note for a debt of $67 dated Jul 1791, so that would place Moses in the Natchez area at least as early as that date.

Laura was focussed on finding a Roberts, so she thought mistakenly that Elizabeth may have been Moses's Nancy Roberts, but in light of what you have learned of the Anna who married John Green, it was just the opposite.
More likely, he married the same Mrs. Green he was with circa 1794 or just lived with her because she would not have been able to get a divorce with her husband's status unknown due to his departure.

Some time before Roberts left her she was invited by Mrs. Green who lived with Moses Johnson to go and stay with her for awhile and she did, with Roberts consent. Johnson was then gone to Orleans with the volunteers [She detailed the work that she did and the supplies she furnished while at the house of Moses Johnson during two months and a few days she stayed as well as listing her belongings she had taken there from the Mather plantation.] When Moses Johnson returned he exacted a note for $40 from her for board for herself and two children and is claiming her possessions in payment [Affidavit of Moses Johnson who denies Mrs. Roberts story; she was not invited to his house, etc.}

Natchez court records show that Moses and Nancy were living in the same household in 1794, but she is still referred to as John Green's wife.

Birth:
daughter Marie is the only child who lived long enough to be entered in the 1880 census where birthplace of parents are recorded. She stated her mother born in Mississippi.

They were living in Rapides Parish in 1810 with 4 children. Bradley served in the War of 1812 in LA with Capt. Thomas Patterson.

In 1830 they were in Cow Bayou settlement, later Jefferson County Texas. This settlement had about 20 families scattered from the Sabine River to the Neches River in Texas. Today this Orange County Texas.

Two of their sons, Jacob Harmon Garner and David Hess Garner settled in Cow Bayou in 1824. In 1828 Sarah Rachel Harmon and Bradley Garner joined the family in Orange County, Texas. Rachel died in Orange County, Texas. Bradley died abt 1848 in Jefferson County, Texas.

Suggestion that he was b after children bt on 4 Jun 1797, Susanne, Amelia, Wm & Jacob. Jacob last of those 4 b 1794. However if b aft 1797 - we have Catherine b 1797 - would have to be after her making him too young to have his first child Amelia b 1813.

His wife Marie Johnson b 1796 (confirmed as bt at 7 y-o in 1803. making her 17 to have first child - marrying at age 16. I can't see him younger than that.

It's reasonable that a 12 y-o would not be bt with younger siblings. They were "grown up" quite young and he any number of reasons why not with the others. But granted, I need to study the 1810 census. If b 1785, in 1810 would be 25 and gone.

She was apparently widowed again by 1870 as she was living with her son James, JR, in Taylor Bayou and in 1880 at age 83 with her granddaughter Mary Hayes HEMMINGWAY. Also listed in 1880 was her g-dau, Missouri Hayes Hemmingway. Listed as Blind -- said father from S.C., mom from MS.

Francis is living with the Myers granddaughters, Eliza now married to Alvin Morgan and two young children, and Malissa is also there. Only speculation that Francis and Mary are both helping with family situations rather than than being separated. She is in census residence 361 and Francis is in 363, only one residence between them.
