    Captain Richard Burton Goode, Son of Major Garland Goode.

    Captain Richard Burton Goode was born in Sparta, Alabama on Sept. 1, 1840, son of Major Garland and Annis Burton Goode. As a child he was educated by his nanny and tutors, as were most children of wealthy families during the 1800's. He attended college at Mobile where he became a Civil Engineer. He served as County Surveyor in Mobile County and in his eary days was Master of a number of Steamships..

    In 1865 Captain Burton married Miss Bettie Davis of Haldon County, Alabama. She was the neice of Jefferson Davis, who became the President of the Confederacy. The Captain purchased land in the Moss Point, Mississippi area, later know as "Creole". He built a plantation of considerable size located around a lake which is still known as Goode Lake. He also aquired cotton mills, sawmills, and many other interests..

    Richard Burton, with the rank of Captain, served with considerable distinction thoughout the Civil War with the Alabama Regiment, participating in a number of engagements in Virginia under General Stonewall Jackson and was three times desperately wounded..

    Captain Richard Burton Goode, after a long and painfull illness, died at his home in Creole on May 14, 1894 from cancer. He is buried in the Orange Grove Cemetery. His 14 children were all unmarried at the time..
