Hello Sherry!! I emailed you earlier tonight but not sure if you got it or not and then I found this message...

My husband's 3rd great grandmother was Susan Snider/Snyder... She was a sibling to John Warren Snider/Snyder... Their parents were Abraham Snyder/Snider and Elizabeth Craig... Still searching on a marriage date for them...

I just started searching this line and found two of the Snyder kids settled in Christian. John and Susan's sister (just one of their siblings) Nancy married Jacob Kline in Jersey County and they settled in Christian County also...

I am glad I found your post... I was looking for death dates of John and Louina Jane... I can't find John in the 1920 census so I thought maybe he died pre 1920-- Do you have him in the 1920 census somewhere?

Thanks for the info and let me know if you want any of the info on other siblings... I have quite a bit as far as kids and census records... Like I said I just started researching this side so haven't got much more than census and children right now...

    Hope to hear from you!!

    Juls

Hello... Just read your post on ancestry...

I have birth and death dates for John Warren Snyder's parents also and have pics of their stones... they are buried about a quarter of a mile from my house...

Here are the children of Abraham Snyder and Elizabeth Craig (who was born in North Carolina)...

    Susan-b. 1832 (my hubby's 3rd great grandmother)
    Nancy b. 1836 mrd. Jacob Kline 10 Feb 1859
    James b. 1838 md. Rebecca ??? (can't find a marriage for them)
Hannah b. 1840 md. George Marion Piggott
    John b. 1842 md. Louina Jane 9 Oct 1866
    George b. 1848
    Catharine b. 1850 (I think March of 1850)
    Joseph b. 1852 md. possibly Mary E. Buckley on 18 Jul 1872
Abner b. 1857 mrd. Mary Isabell East on 6 Nov 1881

All the marriages listed happened in Jersey County, IL...

I am having some trouble with finding George and Catharine but just started so many more rocks to be turned over... LOL

So far I have only found John being in Civil War...

Abner and his wife are buried at Hardin Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun, Illinois... Will be taking pics soon

I also believe James and Rebecca are buried there also... I am waiting on my friend to get home from her weekend away with her hubby to look in the cemetery book for Calhoun County...

I am wondering if Nancy and Jacob Kline are buried in Morrisonville Cemetery also like John and Jane are???

Okay once I get everything into my program I will send you the program...

    Glad to meet you!!

    Juls

From Susan to Hannah or John were born in Smith Co., TN... The rest in IL... I "thought" John was born in TN but according to the Illinois Civil War Detail Report says he was born in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co, IL...

    Funny thing about Hannah...

Susan married Dr. James A Piggott... Dr. James was married before and had 4 children... one being George Piggott... Hannah married George last 1860's.. So Susan was George's step son but also her brother-in-law...

Hannah and George (husband) and one of their adult children are also buried at the cemetery near here... George and Hannah had a set of twins that died as little ones who are also listed to be buried at the same cemetery... Need to stop by there this week and see if their stones are still there..

Mrs. Snyder being in poor health, was generally left to sleep as long as she wanted to, but she too, generally arose pretty early, hence when she failed to get up by breakfast time, Miss Snyder remarked to her father; "Wonder why mother does not get up?"
She went into her mother's room and found her dead. Dr. Gibson was immediately summoned and found she had been dead several hours, as the body had begun to stiffen, which would take some time as warm as the weather was.
Coroner Snyder of Taylorville was notified and came down at 3:37 p.m., and held an inquest. Death was attributed to heart trouble, from which the decedent had been suffering off and on for some years. The coroner's jury was composed of Dr. G. Gundry, Judge w.F. Notes:

census record shows his parents both born in PA.

    [A Snider-from Julie Goheen.FTW]
The first census I find Abraham and Elizabeth are in the 1840. They are living in Smith County, Illinois. I have found an Abraham in the 1830 census but not for sure... There is one Abraham in Greene County, TN but I have no proof that this is our Abraham.

In the 1850 census Abraham and family are living in Twp 7, Range 11 in Jersey County, Illinois.
Abraham Snyder, 35, M, farmer, born TN
    Elizabeth, 30, F, born NC
    Susanah, 16, F, born TN
    Nancy, 14, F, born TN
    James, 12, M, born TN
Hannah, 9, F, born in TN
    John, 7, M, TN
    George, 2, M, IL
    Catherine, 6/12, F, TN

In the 1860 census, Abraham are living in Jersey Landing Precinct in Jersey County.
Abram Snyder, 61, M, farmer, born TN**
    Elizabeth, 62, F, born SC**
Hannah, 20, F, born in IL
    John, 15, M, TN
    George, 14, M, TN
    Catherine, 10, F, TN
    Joseph, 8, M, IL
    Abner, 3, M, born IL

Lots of discrepancies between 1850 and 1860 census... First, look at Abe and Elizabeth's age. .. they jumped about 30 years in ten years. Second, Hannah is born in IL in the 1860 census and TN in the 1850 census... They were in Smith, TN in 1840 so not sure... Her death certificate says Smith, TN as birthplace. Third, George should be 12 based on the 1850 census, John should be 17 according to the 1850 census. Also the birthplace of Elizabeth went from NC in 1850 to SC in 1860.

In the 1870 census, Abraham and Elizabeth are in Twp 6, Range 11 in Jersey County.
    Snider, Abraham, 69, b. TN
    Snider, Elizabeth, 55, b. TN
Snider, Absalom A, 13, b. IL (this is Abner)
    Snider, George W, age 22, b. IL

    Yet again some discrepancies...

1880 census finds the Snider family in the Illinois Twp of Jersey County.
Abriham, 80, b.IL Father and mother listed as born in PA
    Elizabeth, 71, b. b. NC
    A. Pollis, 24, b. IL -- this is Abner but not sure where Pollis comes in at

I am still looking for the marriage of Abraham and Elizabeth. I am pretty sure it happened in TN, but have no proof or date as of yet.

Jersey county is 800 miles NW from Smith county.

    1820 census shows a Jacob in Jackson County;
    a couple 26-44 (1776-1794) and one 1 male over 45 (bef 1775).
Jacob could be either, prob younger, elder is one Abraham who is taxpayer in 1812.
    also 2 males under 10 (1810-1820), 1 f 10-15

Abraham could possibly be a male under 10 since he gave a wide range of ages in his census records.

    update 11/29/2014
found a family of Sniders in Greene Co TN that seemed suspicious and traced them - turned out they were from VA instead of PA.; so probably not; but going to leave them in the file after all that work. They'll probably connect to somebody eventually.

Then I found where one of John Warren's granddaughter's married a Snider (Snyder) - Eva Snider m Arthur P. Snyder who was born in PA. Families stick close for generations, even centuries; so figured he could be a cousin of sorts - tracked his family; but didn't see a connection.

In tracking his family I saw that his sister Mildred Parma Snyder also married a Snyder - Dudley Clarence - also from PA. So, I ran his line, too. Still zilch.

Not seeing a connection yet between all these, I tracked the Kline family - Germans who migrated thru PA - Jacob Kline m Nancy Elizabeth Snider, dau of Abraham & Eliz Craig. Only thing that I cocked my head at after doing that is saw that an Alfred Skinner was in the household of one of them as a servant in Christian Co in 1900. I can't figure out who he was; but makes me think these families were connected in PA.

Notes for Samuel Joseph Nichols: Based on Mrs. Edwin W. Turner genealogy report 28 July 1986:

Joseph and Sarah (Richardson) were both born in Alabama, they were married in Alabama, and their first two children were born in Alabama. Their third child was born in Mississippi, their fourth child through 11th child were all born in Arkansas. Their last child was born in Illinois. At about 1845, Joseph and Sarah moved from Mississippi (where Lavina Jane was born) to Mountain Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas.

On the 1850 Federal Census, which was made 1850 November 2, Joseph and Sarah Nichols lived in Mountain Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas and they had five children. Joseph Nichols was on the Personal Property Tax List through 1853 in Montgomery County. The area that was then Mountain Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas is in present day Garland County, Arkansas. The major portion of what was then Mountain Township is now inundated by 48,000 acre Lake Oachita, which was formed in 1955 by construction of Blakely Mountain Dam across the Oachita River. Lake Oachita stretches 52 miles, spanning sizeable portions of both Garland and Montgomery Counties in West Central Arkansas.

1857, July 2, Joseph Nichols was the ORIGINAL purchaser of 320 acres of land in Hempstead County, Arkansas. To wit: All land i Township 9 South, Range 25 West, S 1/2 of SE1/4 - Section 7 - 80 acres, 12 and 1/2 cents per acre, $10.00 paid. Residence was located on this parcel: NE1/4 - Section 18 - 160 acres, NW 1/4 of SE1/4 - Section 18 - 40 acres, SE1/4 of NW1/4 - Section 18 - 40 acres, total of 240 acres in Section 18, 12 1/2 cents per acre, $30.00 paid. All 320 acres of his land was purchased from the Federal land Office in Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas on Original Purchase Certificate number 12165. Joseph Nichols also had SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 - Section 7 - 40 acres, RR selection.

1858, June 28, Joseph Nichols, signed a Sworn Declaration and Corroborating Affidavit that he had been residing on the above land since 1857, January 1; and that he had erected thereon a dwelling house 18 feet square, a smoke house 12 feet square, and had 10 acres of land in cultivation. Also 1858, June 28, Henry Church and Joshua T. Yarbrough signed a Corroborating Affidavit stating they knew from personal observation that the above statements were true.

1858, November 12, Joseph and Sarah Nichols, sold to Daniel A. Reeder for $500.00 the following land: The NE1/4 of SW1/4, and SE1/4 of NW1/4, and all that part of the NE1/4 of Section 18, that lies South of the North Fork of Prairie Creek. All land in Township 9 South, Range 25 West, containing in all 185 acres more or less.

1859, August 19, Samuel Joseph and Sarah Nichols sold to James McCartney for $300.00 the following land: The S1/2 of SE1/4 of Section 7, Township 9 South, Range 25 West, and all of the NE 1/4 of Section 18, lying North of Prairie Creek in Township 9 South, Range 25 West, containing in all 160 acres more or less.

    1860, Joseph Nichols, paid taxes on the following land in Hempstead County, Arkansas: S1/2 of SE1/4 - Section 7 - 80 acres, SW1/4 of SW1/4 - Section 8 - 40 acres, NW1/4 of NW1/4 - Section 17 - 40 acres, N1/2 of NE1/4 - Section 18 - 80 acres. All land in Township 9 South, Range 25 West.

1860 - in the summer after the Census was made, Joseph Nichols and family moved to Washington Township, Lawrence County, Arkansas approximately 10 miles Southeast of Evening Shade, on Fool Creek. Their Post Office at that time was Evening Shade. They then moved to Jersey County, Ill. around the Fall of 1863 and did not return to Sharp County, Arkansas until November 1868.

(I believe they moved to Illinois to escape the perils of the Civil War. Story told was that John Taylor Nichols (their Confederate son) returned to Arkansas after the war to help rebuild their home that had been destroyed) (Glenda Nichols)

Son's William Martin Nichols and John Taylor Nichols, joined the Confederate Forces in the Civil War. Younger son, Samuel James Nichols joined the Union Forces and he settled in Illinois after the war. There is no record of William Martin Nichols after the war and it is believed that he died of wounds. John Taylor Nichols returned to the home in Arkansas and later married and moved to Missouri.

On the 1880 Federal Census, Joseph and Sarah Nichols, lived in Washington Township, Sharp County, Arkansas.

Joseph and Sarah Nichols owned 80 acres of land and residence in Big Creek Township, and 140 acres of land and residence in Washington Township, Sharp County, Arkansas. On the 1880 Census, Joseph Nichols' occupation was listed as Farmer/Minister. On some of the Tax Records for Sharp County, Joseph was listed as the Reverand Joseph Nichols. We have been told that Joseph Nichols was a minister of the Church of Christ.

Sarah is in Arkansas. Sarah would have been born bet John & Burrell. Since she was born in Alabama, John in TN & Burrell in KY, doubtful family would have been in AL for Sarah's birth. So, her father probably not this William. (

"Pioneers -- Thomas McCoy settled in the township (Wolf Creek) in 1796 or 1797, removing thither from Harper's Ferry, Va. He had six sons that settled in the neighborhood, viz.: John, Joseph, James, Thomas, Hugh and William. All grew to manhood, leaving sons and daughters. His neighbors at that time were William Breckenridge, the nearest one; Samuel Waldron, the McKees, William McMillan, Abraham Snyder, William Smith and others. These people had their peculiar sport. One of their tricks was to pull the hair of a comrad who could not say "thump, thunder and thatch." When a German was coaxed into the party and called out "tump, tunder, and tach," he was sure to have his head well plucked. In this game poor Snyder was the sufferer among the Wolf Creek boys."

Coulter, then states of the family, "About 1804 they removed to this county (Mercer), and settled in Wolf Creek Township, which is now the northern part of Liberty Township, purchasing a farm of Abraham Snyder, which is now owned by Edward Denniston and Joseph Moore."

(Note: Wm Breckenridge mentioned here does not seem to be at least closely related to our Breckenridges who settled in Virginia, unless their connection was in Scotland. This William Breckenridge (Brackenridge) came to America from Campbeltown, Argylshire, Scotland, about 1773, settled first in York Co, Pa; was married to Jane Anderson.

The question is - who was the father of Sam & Jim Nichols? They could have been the sons Samuel Frances Nichols 1807 and James Nichols 1811 who belonged to William & Dorcas Nichols, except we know that William & Dorcas were both still alive on the 1850 census of Montgomery County, Arkansas. The story says that the "father" of Sam & Jim died circa 1845 and was the first one buried there. Perhaps the 1845 date is incorrect? I was told that William and Dorca were buried in Shelbyville, Ill., but I find no proof of that either. That person who posted Illinois as their burial spot also indicates a death date of 1845 - again - we know they were both alive in 1850. It's also strange that they had two sons both named Samuel. The 1850 census shows them living near their son Samuel Joseph Nichols who is buried at Mt. Pisgah. Something to think about???
