    Notes:

(obvious error on his birthdate or his sister Missouri's -but she does not appear to be his sister.)

James enlisted at Sabine Pass 24 May 1845 for the Mexican War; served in Civil War as Pvt 2nd Reg, 4th Co Inf and was discharged at Camayo Mex 24 September 1846. He applied for pension at age 61. The last entry is dated 21 May 1894. He was in the same company as his cousin Theophilus Hayes and Warren Johnson, possibly in Civil War.

1860 after wife, Emily Burrell Hayes died the children disbursed for time.
Alzena was living with John McCall, husband of her 1st cousin Martha Hayes, & Mary Gallier, her grandmother.

Matilda Hayes (later Gentz) 1860 Census: Listed age 10, living with Jacob Garner & Matilda Hayes, her aunt, sister to her father.

In the next residence in the census is Nancy was Living with James McCall and Anna Garner (8 years old). Nancy's father James was brother to Anna's mother, Matilda. i.e. 1st cousin.

Mary was living with John McCall, husband of her 1st cousin Martha Hayes, and her grandmother Marie Gallier.

At some point after Selina Maas (2nd wife) died, he and his children Mary (Emily's child), age 16, and Missoura (Selina's child) age 6, moved in with his mother MARIE JOHNSON HAYES, as he was counted there in the 1870 census. Daughter Mary married Lovis Obey the following year in 1871.
By the 1880 census, James had moved in with Matilda, another daughter by Emily BURRELL, and her husband CHARLES GENTZ and their family. Missouri Hayes, now age 15 had moved in with her sister Mary and Mary's 2nd husband Franklin Hemmingway. nklin claimed her as a sister-in-law, even though it was five years later in 1885 that Missouri married his brother Eustace Hemmingway.

note: burial - no record in Magnolia for him or Emily. Possibly buried in Gentz cem.

    Notes:

    Birth:
Suggestion that he was b after children bt on 4 Jun 1797, Susanne, Amelia, Wm & Jacob. Jacob last of those 4 b 1794. However if b aft 1797 - we have Catherine b 1797 - would have to be after her making him too young to have his first child Amelia b 1813.

His wife Marie Johnson b 1796 (confirmed as bt at 7 y-o in 1803. making her 17 to have first child - marrying at age 16. I can't see him younger than that.

It's reasonable that a 12 y-o would not be bt with younger siblings. They were "grown up" quite young and he any number of reasons why not with the others. But granted, I need to study the 1810 census. If b 1785, in 1810 would be 25 and gone.

    followup - his age group:
    1810 b.d. 1795-1800 10 to 15
    1820 b.d. 1776-1794 26-44
    1830 b.d. 1781-1790 40-49

we had recaluclated him to be 1795 to accomodate 1810.
1820 fits, almost - by one year - or a few months
her b.d. is definite, and she was not categorized correctly
1830, by then maybe he guessed and could easily be off 5 yrs. Conclusion: 1795 is reasonable.

She was apparently widowed again by 1870 as she was living with her son James, JR, in Taylor Bayou and in 1880 at age 83 with her granddaughter Mary Hayes HEMMINGWAY. Also listed in 1880 was her g-dau, Missouri Hayes Hemmingway. Listed as Blind -- said father from S.C., mom from MS.

1850 census: living with Marie & Francis Gallier were their granddaughters Eliza and Melissa Ann Myers. Melissa Ann Myers m James Chambers.

1860 census: age 64, midwife, LA, living with John McCall, husband of her granddaughter Martha Hayes; however Martha is not listed. Francis is living with the Myers granddaughters, Eliza now married to Alvin Morgan and two young children, and Malissa is also there. Only speculation that Francis and Mary are both helping with family situations rather than than being separated. She is in census residence 361 and Francis is in 363, only one residence between them.

The name was spelled like it sounded when they came to united states, it sounds like mass or maas, maaz but in germany the name was spelled maab the b is a sharfis ss which is spelled "ss" in place of the b is the proper spelling.
So it should be Maass. I looked up usedom in prussia that is east of Anklam and I believe this area is part of Vorpommern have to check further if it is part of the west or east section and might now be in poland. I will check further if you don't have this information. I also have information on the Maass that lived in Thurkow near Teterow in Mecklenburg-Schwerin,Prussia. May family came from Schossow,Demmin,VorPommern,Prussia.
Also the for that area you Have the city of Usedom,?then you the township or land kreiswhich could be anklam or Ueckermunde, then Vor Pommern is the State, and Prussia is the country. hope i helped.

From "Pioneer Reminiscenses by T.J. Russell"

This is an excerpt from the Feb.23,1906 Beaumont Journal.
The article was about Sabine Pass.

William Maass settled there in 1849, out at the west end of Broadway, and raised a large family, all of whom have moved away. His wife was Miss Charlotte Gentz. Both are dead. This family moved to this state from Germany in 1845.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Our lines cross through Charlotte Gentz who married William Maass. My information on Charlotte was that she was born in Philamine, Germany. Does that match your information? Don't know what you have on other lines but will share. Do you know where the Gentz line came from in Germany?
