Freeda had entered the beauty pageant at the behest of a girlfriend who wanted to enter and didn't want to do it by herself. So, Freeda agreed. She was 15 and already married. Don't know if there was an age limit, but she did have to lie about being married. It was stricky a bathing beauty contest, no talent competition.
Amazingly, she won Miss Beaumont and earned the right to go on to Miss America in New Jersey. My aunt Tack (Runie Esther) went with her as sort of a chaperone; and they went by boat from Galveston to Atlantic City. Ralph (Freeda's son) told that two of the judges were Norman Rockwell and Jack Dempsey.
Freeda and Tack wanted to see NY, while they were there, and after it was pretty clear that Miss Philadelphia was going to win, they kind of snuck off and went to see the Ziegfeld Follies. She told that they were in the balcony and that she felt a tap on her shoulder and a voice said, "What are you doing here?" When she turned to look, it was Norman Rockwell. She replied, "And what are YOU doing here?" And he laughed and said something like, well, there was just so much that he could handle.
She did not win, or place in that Miss America competition. That was the 4th Miss America Pageant.

    1924
The Newspaper Publishers Association issued a bulletin advising its members to disassociate themselves with the pageant as it has supplied Atlantic City with "the most flagrant use of free publicity." Not one paper backed out. In fact, even more newspapers sent representatives and the new Pageant Director General Armand T. Nichols and his Board of Directors, extended the event to five days. Informal judge's interviews continued as a part of judging in those early years to asses personality and intelligence. Judge's Chairman and famed artist Howard Chandler Christy returned for his fourth straight year to serve in this capacity. Other notable 1924 judges included Norman Rockwell and Earl Carroll. Miss Boston was revealed to be married and placed in the professional division. She sued, but the pageant finally remembered to include a rule barring married women from competing for the Miss America crown. Ruth Malcomson, Miss Philadelphia (PA), would win the honor in a close race with Mary Katherine Campbell, while Miss San Diego, Fay Lanphier, finished third.

This residence, 2050 Magnolia was a boarding house that Mary and George Rowley owned. Her brothers Kyle and Clyde were renting a room from her in 1918 as shown on Kyle's draft registration card in Sept of 1918 and the Clyde's entry in the city directory of that year. This address was also given on Amanda's (their mother) death cert, but gave her residence in Port Neches. Amanda died from influenza on Dec 3rd, and apparently had gone to her daugher's for care during her sickness.
Mary's husband, George Rowley, as well, died from influenza in this house on Dec 9, 1918.
Freeda would have been 9 years old.

Rowley, b Jul 1850 in England, parents born in England. He lives alone and declares himself single. Occupation is carpenter. Immigrated in 1861, 39 years ago, and was naturalized. Had been unemployed 3 months and rented his home.

We are going where they have fine schools. Mr. Norton wants me to try again to get Andrew to come live with us. I know we can do more for him than Pa will ever be able to do he has let Sister and George have a brother, and now when I ask him for one he will not let me have one. I guess he thinks I do not deserve one. I wonder if he remembers who took care of his four little motherless boys for him. I wish you would ask Pa to let me have Andrew."

    Note:
1The Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 killed 21 million people world-wide--more than died in World War I. It is a fascinating study of a modern Black Plague, and I am including an excerpt from the Port Arthur News dated 13 June, 1976:

"How it travelled such great distances in that autumn still baffles science. Remote Eskimo villages were discovered completely wiped out by the disease while doctors in China cried it rolled over that country like a tidal wave.
"In Boston, trading on the stock exchange went to half-days; theatres were closed; athletic contests cancelled--even a churchless Sunday was declared Sept. 22, 1918, to keep people and the disease off the streets.
"At the same time, Chicago's newly formed influenza commission called for the arrest of open-faced sneezers. But still doctors reports sadly tell of hundreds showing up at over-crowded, understaffed hospitals with coloring "blue as huckleberr." Few lived through the night.
"Continuing onto the West Coast, Seattle policemen were required to wear masks, but the sickness prevailed.
"Here in Texas, one-half of the city of San Antonio came down with the flu.
"Assuredly, each early Port Arthurian in 1918 lost at least an acquaintance, if not a friend.
"Roy McCollum, then 27-years-old, recalls being the only one in his family stricken. He said he remembers being in bed, ("The only place I felt like being,") and watching an undertaker walk past his window.
"'I remember thinking how much business this flu had brought him and the next day I heard he came down with it and died that night,' McCollum stated."
