    Notes:

    John "Perry" Landrum

Some people who remembered Perry Landrum said he was a tough guy with an overbearing personality and a dead shot with his six-shooter. His family added that he was just tougher than the other guys and that most men were afraid of Perry. One relative said "he wasn't mean, he just didn't take any bull". At any rate, these personality traits put him in his grave.

Perry lived outside of Beaumont, Texas in Fannett and was Deputy Constable there and at the little town of Odelia. Odelia was a sawmill town located in the woods between Fannett and Hampshire. Perry lived on the old Landrum homestead site with his wife and children. There was a family in the area by the name of Hargraves. Mayo Hargraves, a young boy of about fourteen, got out-of-line with one of Perry's daughters. Perry rode out to the Hargraves place and made the boy's father whip the shirt off his back for the offense -typical justice in those days. As a result, Mayo tried to kill Perry but failed in his attempt to shoot him off his horse. Afterwards, Mayo fled the county in haste.

It was a young man named Tom Jackson who succeeded in killing Perry on May 16, 1897. Perry was appointed postmaster at Odelia in addition to his job as constable. This meant he made daily trips into Odelia. One day he caught Jackson jumping off the train from Winnie and Perry arrested him for train riding without a ticket. Perry was acquainted with the young man having had trouble with him in the past. After Jackson was released he (Jackson) borrowed a shotgun and went out on the road to Odelia to wait for Perry. Jackson was afraid of Perry so he hid from view and as Perry approached the spot where Jackson was hiding he was ambushed and killed instantly by a shotbun blast to the chest.

Tom Jackson was indicted on a charge of murder on May 22, 1907. He entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter on October 29th and was sentenced to two years in the state penitentiary, the LOWEST PENATLY.

Jackson was released from prison just six months later.

Reed operated a blacksmith shop in the Pine Island community. The county?s other four blacksmiths were employed by the Texas and New Orleans Railroad at Beaumont.83 Closely allied to blacksmithing was the wagon-making trade, an occupation in which two early Beaumonters, Joseph E.
