    Notes:

    Other-Begin:
A Gabriel Muffett of Prince William County was apprenticed to Lynaugh Helm, beginning on 5 September 1763. His father (deceased) was George Muffett. [Dettingen Parish Vestry Book, 1745-1785, pg. 38] He is believed to have been the Gabriel Mufett who was deeded 346 acres in the Parish of Dettingen by Maurice Lynaugh. [Shenandoah Families-Helm by Bessie Taul Conkwright]
(Perhaps this is Gabriel, son of Gabriel - not George. The elder Gabriel had willed in 1758 that his minor children be placed in the care of Lynaugh and Leonard Helm.

Gabriel married Anna Carrington on 18 Nov 1770 in Charlotte Co, Virginia. Anna was born on 27 Oct 1747; died on 11 Feb 1772. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    • Census: 1751, Michaelmass, Prince William Co, Virginia; rent role
    • Will: 1758, Dettingen Parish, Prince William Co, Virginia
    • Military: Between 1778 and 1785, French & Indian War

    Notes:

According to records from the old Threadneedle Street Walloon French Huguenot church in London England, my Moffett family records begin with Jean Baptiste Muffett, born 9 March 1679 in Bohain, Ainse, a town north and a short distance east of Paris, France near the Belgium border. On April 29, 1706 in London England, he married Francoise Duprez, born 1683 in Il Le Re, France. They had a son, Gabriel Moffett born 16 October 1709 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Gabriel enlisted as a soldier in the French and Indian
War, after leaving a Will of instructions upon his death, he
left the homestead to battle. He was killed and scalped by
the Indians near the Fort Duquesne, Pennsylvania. Gabriel,
Sr. died on March 20, 1758 and is buried in Frederick,
Dettingen Parish, Prince William County, VA . Mary had
previously died in Prince William County, VA., on May 26,
    1756.

"It was a time of War for Gabriel Moffett, Sr. He was
soon to leave and join the forces to fight the French and
Indians. His destination was near Fort Dushane in the
Pennsylvania Province of his Majesty's Territory. At this
time Gabriel, Sr. was the Sheriff of Prince William County
in Virginia. As he weighed the risks involved, Gabriel
protected his family the last way that he knew to do, by
providing his last will and testament before his departure.

It would be destiny that he did so, for he never
returned to his beloved family. He died in the French and
    Indian War."

(this was likely Gabriel's son rather than George. When Gabriel died, he left his minor children in the care of his brothers-in-laws, Lynaugh and Leonard)

Frederick Co. VA Deed Book #12, page 487, Aug 5, 1768 - John Madden grants power of attorney to John Moffatt of Fauquier Co to lease 123 acres in Prince William County, this land granted by Leonard Helm (patent Jan 15, 1726). (relationship of John Moffatt not known)

According to the 1723 Virginia Tobacco Lists, brothers Henry and Gabriel Moffett were living in the household of Lewis Reno in 1723 in Dettingen Parish. Frank Moffett wrote the following based on his research of these tobacco lists: "This was a census which was taken to allocate the number of tobacco plants which each male would be allowed to plant, as there was a tobacco glut, and the price was suffering. Sort of a colonial version of FDR's "Land Bank" program, wherein farmers were paid not to grow crops, etc. The brothers Henry (sometimes recorded as Heinrich) Moffett and Gabriel were listed in the household of Lewis Reno, a Huguenot, along with Reno sons, in Dettingen Parish, the location of which is now in Prince William County (then Stafford County).

    Hello,

I was just looking at your family group sheet for Jean Baptiste Moffett and Francoise Duprez, and thought you should know something. My sister and I have been researching her husband's ancestry, which goes back to Henry (Henrich) Moffett, who died ca. 1778 in Fauquier County, Virginia. (Thus, a supposed son of Jean Baptiste Moffett.)

We obtained all this information about the connection to Jean Baptiste and Francoise (Duprez) Moffett from the Clan Moffat Society several years ago. We recently hired a professional genealogist (with a Ph.D.) to actually search the French Huguenot records of London for verification of this information. (You notice than many precise dates of baptism, etc. are provided, and purportedly come from the church registers of the French Huguenot Church of Threadneedle Street in London.) The records of the French Church of Threadneedle Street, however, contain absolutely NO mention of this family. The index for the records was checked, and then the researcher checked the specific years, since precise dates were given. No mention of a Meuffette/Muffett/Muphet/Moffett family was made. The researcher then checked the other Huguenot church records available, but still no luck. As it turns out, this entire family was fabricated by someone (possibly a research firm in Utah).

If you check the records of the Clan Moffat Society online, you will see that they have removed Jean Baptiste Moffett from their records entirely, since he never existed.

    Sincerely,

    Timothy C. Parrott

Jean married Francoise Duprez, (proven false) on 29 Apr 1706 in London, England. Francoise was born in 1683 in Il Le Re, France; died after 1720. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    1. Henry (Henrich) Moffett was born before 28 May 1707 in Scotland; was christened on 28 May 1707 in Threadneedle Street, Walloon French Huguenot Church, London, England; died about 1778 in of, Fauquier Co, Virginia.
    2. 4. 3. 10.  Thomas Helm, Sr (immigrant) was born before 8 Jun 1687 in Goosnargh, Lancashire, England; was christened on 8 Jun 1687 in Churchtown, Lancashire, England (son of Captain Leonard* Helm, (Immigrant) and Mrs. Jane (..) Helm); died about 1755 in Fauquier Co, Virginia.

    CARTMEL PRIORY 1660 - 1723
    =======================
Burial - 9 Aug 1695 - Isabel Helme (of Walton)
Burial 10 Jun 1687 - Jane wife of Leonard Helme
Baptism 8 Jun 1687 Thomas son of Leonard Helme (of Churchtown) (Betty
has the baptism of this child as 8 Jun 1689, if it is the same family.)

Now it looks as though Jane (wife of Leonard) died two days after her son Thomas was baptized - childbirth must have killed her. Did this same Leonard then remarry Eliz. Greenwood on 23 Nov 1687 - if he did. then, he didn't waste much time, though he obviously needed to find another wife to look after his baby.

    __________________________

NOW, from the above we know that Leonard's son, Thomas, was baptized up at Cartmel in the Lake District and it says that Leonard is from Churchtown. The only Churchtown on the UK atlas is the one in Lancashire and that is near Garstang (nearly at Goosnargh). Cartmel may have been Jane's home place. Thus, maybe this Leonard could be described as a Goosnargh Leonard Helme. If so,the link with Leonard of Virginia is in prospect.

    --------------

The will of Maurice Lynaugh, dated 28 September 1751; probated 12 August 1755, bequeathed a Negro man to his grandson, Lynaugh, after his wife Mary's death. His daughter Margaret received all the remainder of his estate, under the same condits, she being his sole heir. [Book O, pg. 306, Stafford County] The Lynaughs had deeded land to Gabriel MUFFETT, of Prince William County and later filed suit against Gabriel in Chancery Court, 1752. [Deed book L, pg 209] Gabriel is believed to have been the husband of MARY HELM, daughter of Leonard Helm, the immigrant. The Lynaughs were probably early settlers in the colony of Virginia. Arthur, Rose and Mary Lynaugh arrived in 1655 and John Lynar in 1653, brought over by Ed Komp, George Cartlough and JOHN MEREDITH. John Lynar may have been the father of Maurice Lynaugh of Lancaster County, Virginia. A Margaret Lynaugh, daughter of Rose, was born 23 July 1754.
Thomas is not mentioned in his father Leonard's will. but is doubtless the son of Leonard Helm, the immigrant.. Possibly he had already received his share of the estate in land. He owned large tracts of land in Prince William and Fauquier Cties, which included Stafford County. Lynaugh, his son, was called "first cousin" by Captain William Helm, the son of Meredith, justice of Frederick County. In a civil suit in Frederick County, 4 August 1748, Thomas made a claim on the estate of Leonard Helm, the immigrant, which was not denied by Meredith, his executor.
Recorded in The Virginia Genealogist, Thomas, of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, bought land from John Madden of Hamilton Parish, Prince William County.
Thomas' will mentions that he had eight children; only six are verified (first six listed). It divided his land equally between his children.

Thomas married Margaret Neill Lynaugh about 1725 in Virginia. Margaret (daughter of Maurice Lynaugh and Mrs. Mary (..) Linaugh) was born in 1698 in Stafford Co, Virginia; died in 1769 in Prince William Co, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Margaret Neill Lynaugh was born in 1698 in Stafford Co, Virginia (daughter of Maurice Lynaugh and Mrs. Mary (..) Linaugh); died in 1769 in Prince William Co, Virginia.
