Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Martha Stone was born in 1707 in Charles Co, Maryland (daughter of Capt Thomas* Stone, (of Poynton Manor) and Martha Jane* Hoskins); died after 1730.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Capt Thomas* Stone, (of Poynton Manor) was born in 1677 in Charles Co, Maryland (son of John* Stone, Gent and Elizabeth* Warren); died before 7 Nov 1727 in Nanjemoy, Charles Co, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Will: 25 May 1727, Charles Co, Maryland

    Notes:

Thomas Stone, son of John and Elizabeth Stone, was born in Charles Countyduring 1677, according to a deposition made in 1721. He married first Martha, the daughter of Colonel Philip Hoskins. The latter died in 1714,and besides appointing Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, he named as heirs his grandson Thomas Stone and daughter Martha Stone.Oswald Hoskins, son of Colonel Philip Hoskins, died in 1721 and named bywill his brother-in-law Thomas Stone as the overseer of his estate, andat the same time mentioned his sister Martha Stone. The fact that he named only two children in his will and referred to other children makes it difficult to establish an absolute list.

    ----------------------------
In 1715 he, as Captain Thomas Stone being a member of the Assembly, signed a petition to His Excellency on the death of the Queen and also the petition upon the ascendancy of His Majesty, George I, to the throne.

Some researchers give Martha Hoskins as the wife of Thomas Stone, but Martha was still unmarried and single 4 Sep 1730 when she received her share of the estate of her sister Mary Hoskins. Jane and Benedicta Hoskins were the only unmarried daughters old enough to be the mother of Thomas Stone's and Robert Hanson's children. Because of the names of the descendants, I have arbitrarily given Jane to Thomas Stone and Benedicta to Robert Hanson.

Thomas* married Martha Jane* Hoskins about 1703 in Charles Co, Maryland. Martha (daughter of Col Philip* Hoskins, Sr. (immigrant) and Elizabeth (Waughop) Wahob) was born on 1 Mar 1681/82 in Port Tobacco, Charles Co, Maryland; died before 1715. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Martha Jane* Hoskins was born on 1 Mar 1681/82 in Port Tobacco, Charles Co, Maryland (daughter of Col Philip* Hoskins, Sr. (immigrant) and Elizabeth (Waughop) Wahob); died before 1715.

Hoskins Jane d/o Philip & Elizabeth Hoskins of Portobacco b 1 Mar 1681

Jane was named after her grandmother, Jane (Lee) Wahob.

NJL note: I am of the opinion that Thomas Stone married Jane Hoskins. I have several pieces of circumstantial evidence to support my opinion:
    1) Jane Hoskins was the only daughter of Philip Hoskins who was old enough. Both Jane and Benedicta were named in the will of their grandfather, Alexander Wahob, written 1 Dec 1683. This would have been an older Benedicta, as the land records give her birth as 16 Dec 1685.
    2) Her daughter, Mary Stone named a daughter Jenny Stone Hanson.
    3) Her daughter, Ann Stone named a daughter Jane Fowke.
    4) Martha Hoskins acknowledged receiving her share of her 2 brothers', mother's and father's estates in a deed signed Jul 8, 1729, and signed as Martha Hoskins, meaning she would have post-deceased Thomas Stone. Thomas' wife at his death and per his will was Catherine Boughton.

Oswald Hoskins, b. c. 1699, unm. d. Chas Co, MD. before 28 Oct 1721. Will dated 14 Jan 1720, Chas Co. probated 6 Sep 1731; personal estate to be divided equally among brothers Bennett and Baylord and sisters Mary Ann and Martha; brother Bennett executor of this as well as their mother's Will; overseers brother-in-law Thomas Stone and William Chandler; witnesses: Ignatius Doyce (Doyne?), William Matthews Thompson and Thomas Jameson.
Martha Hoskins, b. c. 1707, m. Thomas Stone of Chas Co., MD before 26 May 1729.

It is believed that Philip Hoskins was some close relation to Sir Bennett Hoskins, Bart (Baronet) (1609-1679) of Morehampton and Harewood, Herefordshire, England. Philip Hoskins was first mentioned 2 Sept 1671, when Bennett Hoskins of England gave him a power of attorney to secure Bennett's patent for the 2000 acre "Manor of Friendship". At that date he is referred to as of or near Wicomico River (present St Mary's or Chas. Co.). The second reference is when by deed dated 7 Sept 1671 he, a planter of Chas. Co. and James Hayes, a planter, purchased the 200 acre Owen's Purchase in Port Tobacco Hundred from John Owen.
Philip Hoskins was a Chas. Co. militia officer in Major Wheeler's Militia 1689-1703 and was referred to as a Colonel in 1707; Chas Co member of the Maryland House of Assembly in 1692, vestryman of Port Tobacco Church, Justice of the Provincial Court, trustee of Cool Springs, and Emissary to the Indians. He directed in his Will that he be buried in Port Tobacco Church. On 12-10-1717 he was appointed residual legatee by the will of Osmond Waple, Gent. of Chas. Co., for the use of Philip's children by wife Ann. By her father's will dated 1683, Eliza Wahob, 1st wife of Philip Hoskins, inherited a 200 acre plantation in Nanjemy Hundred, Chas. Co., MD., and bequests were made to her daughters Benedicta and Jane Hoskins. (Most of this was prepared by: George Ely Russell, Bowie, MD, May 1963. See National Genealogical Society Quarterly, March 1963, pg. 26-31, and Hoskins Families of Seventeenth Century America, by Geroge Ely Russell - Private Pub.)

Norma Fiske Lundgren wrote: I am of the opinion that Thomas Stone married Jane Hoskins, the oldest child of Philip Hoskins and Elizabeth Waughop. I have three pieces of circumstantial evidence for it.
    1) She is the only one of Philip Hoskins' daughters (of which I am aware) that was old enough. The land records have her born 1 Mar 1681/82. She was mentioned in the will of her grandfather, Alexander Wahob, written 1st Dec, 1683. She and her sister are the only two Hoskins grand-children mentioned, which supports the data with her as the oldest.
    2) William Hanson and Mary Stone, the daughter of Thomas Stone, named a daughter "Jenny Hoskins Hanson". William Hanson was the son of Robert Hanson and Benedicta Hoskins, the sister of Jane. Benedicta was mentioned in her grandfather's will, too, but that was probably an older sister who did not survive, as the land records give Benedicta's birth as 16 Dec 1685.
    3) Roger Fowke and Anne Stone, the daughter of Thomas Stone, named a daughter "Jane Fowke". Roger Fowke was the son of Gerard Fowke, and Sarah Burdett.

  1. 4.  John* Stone, Gent was born in 1647 in Hungars Parish, Accomack Co, Virginia (son of Gov William* Stone and Verlinda* Graves); died before 10 Aug 1698 in Poynton Manor, Charles Co, Maryland.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Will: 10 Aug 1698, Charles Co, Maryland

    Notes:

John Stone, son of William and Verlinda (Cotton or Graves) Stone, was born in Accomac County, Virginia, and was brought to Maryland by his parents in 1648. Circumstances point to the fact that he had three wives, the first one being Elizabeth (???), who is sometime believed to be the daughter of Thomas Warren who died in 1684. John Stone with his wife Elizabeth was present at the negotiation of his brother's will in 1676.

To this union was born two sons, inasmuch as a subsequent deed states that Thomas was the only brother of John of the "whole blood". Matthew was therefore of another marriage. The children of the third union are proved by the fact that his widow was made the guardian of "her" children as well as the executrix of their estates.

John Stone was deeded by his brother, Richard, in 1664 for natural love and affections 500 acres of land on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay on the south side of the Sassafras River. The deed was witnessed by Thomas MANNING, Thomas Sprigg, and Humphrey Warren.

On June 11, 1667, John Stone, Gent., appeared at the Perogative Court and took the oath before Charles Calvert as administrator of the estate of his deceased brother, Richard Stone, Gent.

On March 2, 1668, a warrant was issued to John Stone and his brother Thomas to appraise the estate of Thomas Burdit, deceased, late of Charles County. VERLINDA Burdit, the relict, was granted letters of administration, and her oath was duly recorded before Joseph Harrison, Gent. A return of the inventory was made on May 14, 1668, at which time it showed that Josias Lambert was an appraiser instead of Thomas Stone.

As early as 1670 John Stone was Gentleman Justice of the Quorum in Charles County; in 1682 he signed a petition as one of His Majesty's Protestant subjects. During 1687 he was again a commissioner of the peace, and from 1678 to 1688 he represented his county in the General Assembly.1 He was a member of the commission for the advancement of trade in the Province, and in 1689 he was on the committee to regulate civil affairs in Charles County. Another public office, though minor, was coroner of Charles County in 1678.

    This shows his approximate age.

    Will:
The will of John Stone was dated September 17, 1697, and was proved in Charles County on August 10, 1698, by the testimony of Joseph MANNING, Philip Briscoe, and Notley Warren. His widow, Eleanor, and his son, Thomas, were named as executors. The latter was to administer upon his own estate and that of his two brothers, Matthew and John, while his widow was to administer upon her own estate and that of her children.

Thomas and Walter received equally the dwelling-plantation, a 500-acre portion of "Poynton Manor", and 80 acres of "St. John's" adjoining. Walter was to have the portion of "Poynton Manor" whereon stood the homestead after the decease of his mother.

Matthew and John were devised "Mangawoman" of 500 acres. Eleanor and Elizabeth were devised 400 acres of "Durwin". His widow received one-third of the personal estate. The overseers were Captain John Bayne, Major William Dent, Gerard Fowke, and William Stone.

At a subsequent account by his widow and executrix mention is made of "seven" children. His widow married subsequently Hugh Tears. The latter in his will of 1699 named his wife, Eleanor, as well as Eleanor and Elizabeth Stone. The widow married thirdly on June 22, 1700, John Beall or Beale.

Nov. 1700 - Hoskins et ux vs. Thomas Mudd [Jr.] Thomas Mudd [Sr.] died seized of 5 tracts of land in Charles Co.: "Bryer Wood" (150 acres), "Boremans Reserve" (488 acres), "Carnavan" (600 acres), "St. Katherine's" (188 acres) and "Jarvis" (120 acres.) Philip Hoskins, Esq. m. Ann, the widow of Thomas Mudd [Sr.] Thomas Mudd [Jr.], the son and heir of Thomas Mudd [Sr.] would not set off the widow's 1/3 to Ann so Hoskins brought suit to compel him to do so. In Oct. 1700, the Provincial Court directed Gerrard Fowlke, the Sheriff of Charles Co., to cause 12 good and lawful men of his bailywick to admeasure all the tracts and set a 1/3 part of them off as Ann's dowry. In Nov. 1700, the 12 men, including John Barron, admeasured the widow's third of "Bryer Wood" and this Fowlke reported back to the Provincial Court, together with his statement that "I am not informed of any other lands in these writs mentioned within my bailywick to be admeasured."

BENNETT HOSKINS. ESQ. received a warrant for 2000 acres of land in Charles County on 8/19/3671 called "Manor of Friendship" (Patent 16:546). His manor was on the west side of the Port Tobacco Creek. He assigned 500 acres of the Manor to PHILIP HOSKINS, with no relationship shown, who was transported into the Province in 1671/2. According to the Charles County Rent Rolls, BENNETT HOSKINS owned 1467 acres. According to a later deed pertaining to "Friendship" he died in the Kingdom of Great Brittain (Deed L#2:231).
PHILIP HOSKINS was transported into the Province of Maryland in 1671/2 (Patent 17:372). On 9/7/1672 with James Hayes, he purchased 200 acres of "Owens Purchase" from John Owen, planter of Charles County (Deed E:46,75.5) He married first Elizabeth Wahob, the daughter of Archibald Wahob and Jane Leah. When Alexander Simpson wrote his will in 1670 he left his Goddaughters Margaret Wahob, and Elizabeth Wahob, the daughters of Archibald Wahob each 120 acres of land. If they died then it was to go to their mother Jane Wahob. To Jacob Leah, the brother of Jane Wahob he left 300 acres of "Simpson's Delight" (Will 1:379). When Archibald Wahob wrote his will in 1683 he named his daughter Elizabeth Hoskins, the wife of PHILIP HOSKINS and his grandchildren BENEDICTA and JANE HOSKINS (Will 4:23).
In the births, marriages and deaths of Charles County six of their children are given. On 4/26/1694 PHILIP HOSKINS, Gent, received 100 acres, "cattle, horses, chattel and other possessions" from Thomas Love, the son of William Love, for five shillings provided he would care for Thomas Love for the rest of his natural life (Deed S:275). PHILIP HOSKINS served as a justice of Charles County and of the Provincial Court, and he was a Colonel in the Maryland Militia.
On 6/8/1683 20 acres of "Addition" was patented for PHILIP HOSKINS (Patent 24:523). On 12/14/1687 187 acres of "Hoskins' Lot" was patented for him (Patent 25:322). In 4/1705 PHILIP HOSKINS purchased "Allenson's Supply," "Mackey's Park" and "Friendship" (Deeds Z:176, 178).
Elizabeth died after 6/2/1698 when she was a witness to the will of Richard Jones of Charles County. By 12/15/1698 PHILIP HOSKINS had married secondly Ann Mathews Mudd, the daughter of Dr. Thomas Mathews and Jane Cockshot, and the widow of Thomas Mudd, with four children (Acc't 18:126). With Richard Wade, PHILIP HOSKINS was named to receive half of the estate of Lewis Jones in his will written on 2/18/1703 and probated on 3/16/1709 (Will 2, part 2:37).
COL. PHILIP HOSKINS wrote his will on 6/20/1714 and it was probated in Charles County on 4/3/1718 (Will 14:475). He left personalty to each of his grandchildren, unnamed. To his son WILLIAM he left the 100 acres he had bought from Thomas Love and personalty. His son PHILIP received 50 acres of "Friendship" and personalty. His son OSWALD received 178 acres of the dwelling plantation and personalty. His son BENNETT received 200 acres he had bought from Garrett Sinett and 187 acres of "Hoskin's Lot" and personalty. His son BAYLARD received 190J/3 acres bought of James Mackey and 200 acres of "St. John's," and a share of his personal estate. His daughters MARY ANNE and MARTHA received personalty. His wife Ann was to have the residue of his estate and then it was to be divided among his children he had by her. He desired to be buried at Port Tobacco Church (St. Ignatius Catholic Church). The accounts of the estate of COL. PHILIP HOSKINS were given on 5/26/1719, valued at £1,121.00.09. OSWALD HOSKINS, the executor of Ann Hoskins, administered his estate. Distributions were made to the five children of his second marriage (Acc't 2:22).
Ann, the widow of PHILIP HOSKINS, wrote her will on 5/6/1718 and it was probated in Charles County on 5/9/1718 (Will 14:611). She named her sons OSWALD and BENNETT HOSKPNS as her executors. They were to divide the personalty left to her by her late husband, and to care for her three other children. OSWALD HOSKINS administered the estates of his father COL. PHILIP HOSKINS and his mother MRS. ANN HOSKINS on 5/26/1719 (Adm Acc't 2:22,24). Those receiving from the estate were the children of the second marriage. On the inventory of Madam Ann Hoskins her next of kin were given as William Mathews and John Craycroft (Inv 1:316B.
By 11/15/1729 OSWALD HOSKINS and BAYLARD HOSKINS were both deceased when BENNETT HOSKINS gave the final accounting of the estates of his father, mother and brother OSWALD. These estates were divided equally between MARY ANNE, MARTHA and himself (Acc't 10:5).

In the will of Col. Philip Hoskins he named his daughter Martha Stone, his
grandson THOMAS STONE, and named THOMAS STONE as the overseer of his estate.
Martha's brother Oswald Hoskins named his brother-in-law THOMAS STONE as the
overseer of his will in 1721, and mentioned his sister Martha Stone. No record
was found for Martha's death, which occurred shortly after 1721.

28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Depositions taken regarding a parcel of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 ac. in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq, deceased; and upon his death in possession of Oswald Hopkins, now deceased, brother of Bennett Hopkins, a minor.
    (1) William Thompson, age ca. 66, that John Cockshutt came into this county with his wife and 2 children and had rights for 2200 ac. Cockshutt died before he put up rights in execution. His widow later married Nicholas Causoon, reputed to be a French man, and said widow gave her husband Causoon rights to 1000 ac. of above mentioned land. The remainder she gave to her 2 daughters, Mary and Jane Corkshutt (also referred to as Ann and Jeane). Nicholas Causoon died and left his widow and one son named Ignatius Causoon. Afterwards, his widow married a surveyor, John (or Robert?) Clark and shortly after died. Her son took possession of his father's lands. This deponent was married to Bennett Hoskins mother's sister and has a tract of land lying contigous. (Liber CL, p. 706).

28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of John Sanders, age ca. 51, taken regarding a parcel of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he knew of an Ignatius Mathis (Matthews) who is said to be the son of Jane Corkshutt. John Causeen was reputed to be the heir of the above mentioned land. Ignatius Causeen married the daughter of this deponent. (Liber CL, p. 707).

28 Oct 1721. Charles Co. Deposition of William Mathis, (Matthews) age ca. 47, regarding a parcel of of land lying in Charles Co. containing 170 acres in possession of Philip Hoskins, Esq. Deponent stated he was the son of the daughter of the above mentioned John Cockshutt, and that he sold part of the tract he had by his mother to Col. Philemon Lloyd, which land is now in dispute. (Liber CL, p. 708).

Note: several spelling errors in the above accounts. Oswald Hopkins should be Oswald Hoskins son of Col. Philip Hoskins and his fathers 2nd wife Ann Mathews (Mudd). Ann Mathews (Mudd) was the daughter of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. William Thompson married Victoria Mathews daughter of Thomas Mathews and 2nd wife Jane Cockshutt. William Mathis, age ca. 47, should be William Mathews also a son of Thomas Mathews and 2nd wife Jane Cockshutt whose mother Jane Hicks married 1st to John Cockshoot, 2nd to Nicholas Causine, and third to Robert Clarke the Surveyor. Ignatius Mathis should be Ignatius Mathews son of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. Ignatius Causoon should read Ignatius Causine whose father Nicholas Causine married Jane Hicks, the widow of John Cockshutt. Bennett Hoskins mother was Ann Mathews who married 2nd to Philip Hoskins, his mother's sister was Victoria Mathews who married William Thompson. John Sanders married Sarah Mathews daughter of Thomas Mathews Jr, son of Thomas Mathews and 1st wife Hester. Thomas Mathews Jr. married Sarah Boarman daughter of William Boarman and 1st wife Sarah Linle. Thomas Mathews Jr. and wife Sarah Boarman had a daughter Sarah Mathews who married John Sanders. Thomas Mathews wife Sarah Boarman (Mathews) married 2nd to Thomas Mudd, and Thomas Mathews Jr.'s sister Ann Mathews also married the same Thomas Mudd who died ca. 1696. Ann Mathews(Mudd) then married Philip Hoskins.

Would these next 4 items imply that Bennett Hoskins [bef 1650-bef 1725] of England was the father of Col. Philip Hoskins' [1660-1718]? Perhaps only the last three items would be enough to infer that as fact? Especially if I could lay my hands on records of the court case to which the last item refers. [1672 would be too early for this Bennett Hoskins to be William Hoskins' half-brother.]

In 1648 Lord BALTIMORE commissioned him to become Governor of Maryland, the first Protestant governor of the state. When he move from Virginia to Maryland, he took with him about 500 non-conformists from Norfolk County, Virginia. He was the nephew of Thomas STONE, merchant haberdasher of London. When William STONE came to America he brought with him his brothers John, Mathew, Andrew and Robert to Accomack County, Virginia- none of whom left children.

Wm. Stone (b. in Northamptonshire. Eng., 1603, d. in Md. 1660) was the son of Capt. John Stone who had interests both in Mass. and on the Eastern Shore of Va. and who "was killed by the Pequods on the Connecticut River while returning to his home in Va." William Stone came to the Eastern Shore about 1632, was a justice in 1633, member of the first recorded Vestry of Hungar's Parish in 1635, and in 1648 was commissioned Governor of Maryland, to which colony he then removed. Proprietary Governor of Maryland appointed by Lord Baltimore

Gov. William Stone (c. 1603-c. 1659/60) and Verlinda Stone

William Stone served as Marylands first Protestant Governor, and he and his wife Verlinda both took action to preserve freedom of religion inMaryland.

William Stone was born in England around 1603 and came from a well-known merchant family in London. However, William chose to come to America, and migrated to Virginia in 1628. He was successful there, working as amerchant and planter. He was respected by his neighbors and was appointedjustice of the peace and then sheriff in Accomack County, Virginia.

He also served as a burgess in the Virginia Assembly. However, when civil war broke out in England, many Protestants who supported the Parliamentwere no longer welcome in Virginia, which supported the King. At thistime, Lord Baltimore, the proprietor of Maryland, began trying to attractmore settlers to Maryland, and many Protestants left Virginia.

William Stone and his wife Verlinda came to Maryland in 1648. That same year Stone was given a great opportunity. With civil war still going onin England and with many new Protestant settlers in Maryland, Lord Baltimore wanted to appoint a Protestant Governor. He chose William Stone, probably partly to reward Stone for promising to bring hundreds ofsettlers to Maryland. Stone served as Governor for six years until someof the more radical Protestants, called Puritans, gained control of the government and began to pass laws which restricted religious freedom.

Stone decided he needed to fight back, so he organized about 100 supporters and marched against the rebels in the Battle of Severn. He was greatly outnumbered, and after losing nearly half his men and beingwounded in the shoulder, Stone surrendered. He was made a prisoner andheld for over a month.

While he was in captivity, his wife Verlinda tried to help him by writing to Lord Baltimore. She made sure the proprietor knew exactly whathappened so he could protect both her husband and the colony. Stone waseventually released from prison and resumed his position as Governor. Hedied in 1660, leaving 14,950 pounds of tobacco for his wife and seven children.

Verlinda soon started acquiring more land for her family. In 1664 she patented 300 acres of land in Charles County which she called Virlinda and two years later bought 500 more acres in what is now Prince Georges County. She lived in the colony which she and her husband had fought to preserve up until her death in 1675.

Stone, Verlinda, Chas. Co, 3rd Mar 1674-5; 13th July, 1675.
To Benony Thomas and hrs, 400 A, "St Verlindas."
    " dau. --- Doyen, personalty,
" son John, ex, residue of estate, real and personal, at 21 yrs. of age.
Test: Margaret Baghay, Barbarie Kendall, Ann Roughey. 2. 364.

Verlenda Stone, Charles County, written 3 March, 1674/75, proved 13 July, 1675.
To Benoni Thomas 400 A, "St Verlindas." and (?) silver spoons.
To daughter (?) Doyen, her silver salt cellars,
Son John appointed executor and to receive the residue both real and personal, he to retain possession of "St Verlinda's" until Benoni Thomas reaches 21 years of age.
Witnesses: Margaret Bayley? or Baglay?, Barbarie Kendall, Ann Roughey

The bit "to take the oath of John Stone, Gent., the executor." in the following, further re-inforces the version that shows John of age. I would think he would have to be 21 to be called "Gent" and to take the oath of administration.
The Stones of Poynton Manor By HARRY WRIGHT NEWMAN Published by the Author Washington, DC. 1937.
The will of Verlinda Stone was proved in Charles County on July 15, 1675, by Margaret Baghay, Barbara Kendall, and Anne Roughey. She devised Benoni Thomas and his heirs the tract "St Verlinda" of 400 acres, but it was to be held by her son John Stone until Benoni arrived at the age of 21 years.(*) Certain articles of personalty were left to her daughter Mrs. Doyne. The residue of the estate was bequeathed to her son John.
The court subsequently ordered Robert Doyne and Matthew Stone to appraise the estate, and Benjamin Rozer, Gent., to take the oath of John Stone, Gent., the executor.
(*)Note: It is also said that Benoni Thomas was a grandson of Verlinda Stone, being the son of Mrs. Doyne by a former marriage.

The will of Verlinda, widow of William Stone, dated Charles county, MD, 3d day of March, 1674/5; proved 13th day of July, 1675 makes but three bequests; 1st, Benony Thomas and heirs to whom she leaves 400 acres of land; 2nd, a daughter Doyen (Doyne), personalty; and 3d, son John whom she makes her Executor, and beneficiary of the residue of her estate both real and personal, at twenty-one years of age. Omitting mention of all but two of William Stone's children suggests that she may not have been the mother of the other children.

  4. 13.  Mrs (..)(..) Hoskins was born about 1620; died after 1660 in of Charles Co, Maryland.
    Children:
    1. 6. Col Philip* Hoskins, Sr. (immigrant) was born in 1650 in England; died on 22 Apr 1718 in Charles Co, Maryland; was buried in Portobacco Church, Charles Co, Maryland.

  5. 14.  Archibald (Wahop) Waughop was born about 1627; died before 1 Dec 1683 in Portobacco, Charles Co, Maryland.

    Notes:

RDS: The first record I can find of John is early 1654; the first record I can find of Archibald is late 1656. Archives of Maryland, Vol. 41, p. 130, shows that in Sep. 1658 John of Piney-Point enters his cattle mark and Archibald enters cattle mark for his god-daughter (John's dau.) Elizabeth Waghop. So it looks like when Archibald comes to Maryland he probably stays with or near John in St. Mary's Co. As you say, John and Archibald are close in age, so not father/son, and probably brothers or cousins. Archibald is not found in Charles Co. court records until 1659.
