Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Cader Cherry was born about 1735 in Virginia (son of Lemuel Cherry and Gatsey Ann Llewellyn); died before 27 May 1782 in Edgecombe Co, North Carolina.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Possessions: 27 May 1782, Edgecombe Co, North Carolina; intestate

    Notes:

Cader Cherry [C1a8h], son of Lemuel Cherry and Gatsey Ann Llewellyn, was born in 1735 in Norfolk Co VA or in Bertie Co NC. He probably lived in or near Edgecombe Co in 1762 because he witnessed a sale of 497 acres from Ebenezer Folsom to William Matthews, both "of Edgecombe Co;" Cader "signed" his name with the letter "K." Cader died by
27 May 1782 in Edgecombe Co, where he was living in 1779. He lived in Edgecombe Co at the end of his life because he, Peter May, and Mark May were witnesses to the 3 February 1777 sale of 200 acres from James Smith of Pitt Co to William Mayo of Edgecombe Co. And on 11 February 1779 Thomas Rhodes of Bertie Co, planter, sold 640 acres to "Cader Cherry, planter of Edgecombe Co" for £150. The land was in Coneto Pocosin and was called Dark Island. It was next to the property of Robert Hardy (see Levi Cherry, Cader's son). Witnesses were Robert Hardy, William Skyles, and Elizabeth Rhodes. On 18 May 1779 Cader sold 94 acres to Robert Hardy, land next to Cader's land and along Coneto Pocosin in Edgecombe Co 9 (Deed book E, page 140). And he sold 220 acres, land along Coneto Pocosin and next to his own land, to Robert Hardy on 5 January 1780 (Deed book E, page 4) for £400. Witnesses of this last sale were "Robert 'X' Hardy Jr, Millisant 'X' Hardy, and Sarah 'X' Knox." It is assumed here that Robert Hardy Jr was a son of the buyer, and Millicent was probably Robert Jr's wife. Who Sarah Knox was is not known. Neither Hardy man could sign his name, but made an "X" instead. Cader's wife was named in the sale as "Juda Cherry." All parties were "of Edgecombe County."

Cader married Judah (Judith) Burnett about 1755. Judah (daughter of Matthew* (Matthis/Matthus) Burnett, Sr. and Mrs. Sarah* (..) Burnett (Everitt?), (prob related?)) was born about 1742; died after 1805 in of, Martin Co, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Judith's and Cader's probable children
    were-
    1. Levi Cherry, b abt 1755
    2. William Cherry (Willie Cherry in 1800), b 1756-1774, lived in Edgecombe Co and was married by 1790. They had a daughter by 1790; in 1800 he had a son and daughter born
    1791-1800.
    3. William Cherry, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790 (there were two William Cherry families there in 1790). This William was married and had a daughter.
    4. Willis Cherry, b 1756-1774. He had a young wife and three daughters born 1791-1800.
In 1790 he lived alone, and was shown as Wiley Cherry.
    5. James Cherry, b 1774 or before, had a wife, two daughters, and two sons born 1775-1790, and lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790. He was not found in Edgecombe Co
    after 1790.
    6. Robert Cherry, b 1755 or before, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790, unmarried. In 1800 he had a wife Mary Worsley, born 1758 and 2 sons and 2 daughter born 1791-1800.
One son was Theopilus Cherry, b 1800. One dau was Peggy Cherry, b 1798.
    7. Wright Cherry, was recently married by 1790 and lived in Edgecombe Co. They had no children in their home then.
    8. Aaron Cherry, b 1756-1774, lived in Edgecombe Co in 1800 and 1810; he had a wife the same age, and had two sons born 1791-1800. His sons in the 1810 census were born 1801-1810. Aaron's wife was born 1766-1784. Aaron died Edgecombe Co in
    1830s. They had a daughter born 1801-1810.
    9. Lemuel Cemetery, b 1774 or before, had a wife, two daughters, a son born by 1774, and two sons born 1775-1790. They lived in Edgecombe Co in 1790.
Children#2 to #9 are assumed (by Source JY) to be Cader's children from their close proximity to each other in the 1790 census, or were gransons of Cader. Many of them were
buyers at Wright's estate sale in 1804, and Cader was the only very early Cherry male in the area who could have been the father or grandfater, and who was born early enough.
Evidence is flimsy, but for now this is all we have. Cader is just the best bet.
