Jacob Haven Sherman Sr, a stout man, was born on 5 Jun 1787 in Portsmouth, Rockingham Co, NH, and died after an adventurous life on 18 Nov 1850 in St Louis Co, Missouri. His burial place is unknown. Jacob was one of the eight children of Richard Shearman. His mother's name as well as his siblings' names is unknown. Jacob's father Richard was born in 1745 and died in 1809.
Richard enlisted in the Revolutionary War on 3 Jan 1777 in 3rd New Hampshire Regiment (Re-enactors webpage http://www.freewebs.com/3rdnewhampshire/)
under Colonial Alexander Schammell (Alex Scammell 2nd Lieut 8 Nov 1776 - 1 Jan 1780 - left wing). After receiving several wounds, Richard became ill and on 31 July 1780 was transferred to the Corps of Invalids from Capt McGregor's Co. He was discharged on 17 Dec 1780. Even though Richard was considered an invalid, his wounds were severe enough for a discharge, but he was fit enough for garrison duty. He was engaged by the Town of Portsmouth as one of their quota for the Continental Army and was stationed at Fort Washington. In the same year that Jacob was born, Richard applied for a pension. In order to receive it, Joseph Gilman, Josiah Gilman, and Dr. Tenney examined him. The three men were a committee that was appointed under the Act of Congress on 7 Jun 1785 for the purpose of granting or disallowing pensions. They certified that while in the service of the United States, Richard had received several wounds, particularly one through the chest of his body, and he was deserving of a pension. On 8 Oct 1807, he began receiving $30 per month. On 25 Apr 1808, his pension was increased to $60 per month, and was made retroactive to begin in 1800 rather than 1807. Richard died in 1809 at the age of 64.

3rd NH Regiment History: (Re-enactors webpage http://www.freewebs.com/3rdnewhampshire/)
In 1777 the 3rd NH Regiment, along with the other two NH regiments, were assigned once more to Fort Ticonderoga, again to repel an invasion from the north, this time led by British General John Burgoyne. But the NH regiments were still severely understrength, and were waiting for the newly recruited companies to arrive. The new companies were marching directly from their homes to Ticonderoga, and were still trickling in days before Burgoyne arrived. The new Colonel of the 3rd NH, Alexander Scammell, reported that they arrived May 20th. But by July 3rd Burgoyne had caught the fort in a great chess move and had cannons looking down upon the fort from Mount Defience. Ft Ticonderoga was evacuated, and Burgoyne desperately chased the Continentals to Hubbardton, Vermont where a short delaying battle was fought by the New England troops that were in the rear of the retreating Continental Army, some NH men being involved.

1780 brought a slowdown in the action for the 3rd NH and the entire northern theatre of the war, the emphasis of the war was shifted to the southern states. At this time the NH regiments were assigned to West Point in New York ironicly at the same time Benedict Arnold was going to betray West Point to the British. Some 3rd NH men were involved in the capture of Arnold's contact man, the British spy Major Andre. But most of the action for the NH troops this year was chasing after the "Cowboys", loyalists who raided cattle in the no-mans land of the NY Hudson Valley between the British and American armies.

On January 1st 1781, faced with reduced troops strengths, Washington was forced to reorganize his army again, and the 3rd NH Regiment was forced to disband and meld into the 1st NH Regt. Thus ended the existence of the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment, a powerful fighting force that had been there since Bunker Hill. But the men who remained, reassigned into the 1st NH, continued the fight. The former Colonel of the 3rd, Alexander Scammell, was wounded at Yorktown on Sept 30th, 1781 and he died of his wounds Oct 6th.

One more Sherman to show up in this family is Thomas "Shearman" who made inventory of Magdeline's 2nd husband Uriah Bonham in 1809, along with Edward Rittinghouse. Rittinghouse shows up in many marriages in both Bonham and Heath families. Ast bet Thomas is the father of Dinah and Rebecca.
Richard was born 1745, putting him in the same generation as Thomas. The common denominator in all this is Jacob Haven's William Smith Sherman (b 1812 NH) who married Eliza Clara Heath in 1836 Monroe Co, MO. I find that Richard Heath (b 18) died in Marion Co, MO, which is a neighboring county to Monroe, though not the right age to be Eliza's father; but if one Heath went to MO, probably at least another or others did, too. Richard was the son of Isaac Heath & Sarah Rogers and grandson of Andrew Shelton Heath, I, & Hannah Smalley, Andrew being a brother to John and Richard. Andrew & Hannah moved to Virginia aft 1780. (Where did the name Shelton come from??)

This is not our Richard. First, the Richard who m Hannah was born per census records between 1761-1770. Our Richard was born 1745.
The children born to this Richard did not indicate any naming pattern consistent with Jacob Haven's children or grandchildren. There are 9 children listed. Linda Clark's book said there were 8 children, one of them Jacob Haven. And none of these are a Jacob. So, to add Jacob would give her 10 children, which doesn't fit the profile that Linda found.
I have never been able to find where Linda found her info; but she related a lot of detail; so I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.
