    Notes:

Irena was full blooded Choctaw Inidan from the tribes of Alabama. Written history first places the Choctaws in what is now Mississippi and Alabama. Irena was from Alabama. The Choctaw were described as being humble, friendly, and tranquil. They wove baskets and using natural dyes, colored their work. They made rafts from logs and tired the logs together with vines. They farmed plots of land for a portion of their food. Corn, boiled with turkey or other pieces of fat meat was said to be a favorite dish, as was 'sagamite', a dish resembling hominey. Children born to Choctaw parents were often named after animals with their name sometimes changed later in life. With the purchase of Louisisana in 1803 and Florida in 1819, the whites continued to move into the area often marrying the Choctaw women and introducing European customs to their wives and the Choctaw families. By the year 1833 the Choctaw were already adopting the styles of the European settlers. TradeCloth was brought into the Alabama Choctaw villages by both the French and British. The Choctaw women's garb was the frontier style "grannie dress". Red was the favorite color.

James Nichols, Irena's husband was also born in Alabama. It was his grandfather, William Nichols who brought the Nichols family to Alabama from North Carolina.

Irena and James were married in Alabama in 1835. They had the first two children while living in Alabama. Between the years of 1843 and 1846 they moved to Polk Country, Cove Twp, Arkansas. Their last two children, Irena Arkansas and Samuel were born there. Irena died sometime after the birth of her son Samuel.
