The many friends of Mrs Bettie Chafin were grieved to hear of her death Tuesday at the home of her son, Palo, in Cookeville. She had been in feeble health for several months as a result of heart dropsy.
Elizabeth Gaines Young was born February 3, 1849 and died August 6, 1935. She was the oldest child of John and Helen Turner Young and was born and reared about 8 miles from Gainesboro.
She was married to James Chaffin December 23, 1871; to this union were born 2 daughters and 2 sons. The daughters (Mrs Helen Williams and Ella Ligon) passed on several years ago.
Her husband died more than 8 years ago.
Her two sons, John and Palo, are well known farmers living near Cookeville. She also leaves one brother, Turner Young, Scottsville, Ky; and 3 sisters, Mrs Ellen Jaquess, Harriman; Mrs Winnie Pippin, Jackson county; [last sister not listed].
She joined the Christian church as a young girl and lived faithful to the end. A noble trait of her character was her love for and kindness to all little children. She was never known to mistread one no matter how ugly it behaved.
She was laid to rest in the Young cemetery near old Shiloh in Jackson county, beside her husband and other relatives.
