  1. 10.  Edward Haven "Eddie" ShermanEdward Haven "Eddie" Sherman was born on 15 Jan 1863 in Wallisville, Chambers Co, Texas (son of Jacob Haven Sherman, Jr and Sarah Magdelena Summers); died on 25 Dec 1915 in Houston, Harris Co, Texas; was buried in Sherman Cem, Lake Charlotte, Chambers Co, Texas.

    Notes:

Edward had brown hair and blue eyes. On Nov 30, 1885, Edward purchased 113.3 acres of land on the N.D. Labadie survey at Lake Charlotte, where he built a home for Nellie, his bride to be. Two months later on 6 Jan 1886 he purchased lot 10 of block 3 in the town of Wallisville. Later that month on 25 Jan 1886 he purchased land located in Wallisville from his sister Emma Scales for $125. Edward sold the Wallisville land on 9 Jan 1889. 31 May 1886 he also purchassed 30 acres on the M.A. Carroll survey, located on Turtle Bay, from his Uncle John T. Sherman for $300. 12 Jul 1890; 40 acres of James McFaddin survey for $225, to pay in charcoal and cordwood and $175 note at 10% interest. 1 Oct 1903, 640 acres of the N.D. Labadie survey for $960. Total Lake Charlotte holdings, approx 825 acres. They did not keep all the land. Some was purchased by Volney McManus in 1891 and Nellie's sister Mary Ann bought some in Feb 1893. Other acreage was also sold after the timber had been cleared.
Edward was a coal burner by trade, needed a lot of land for the timber. To produce the coal, hardwood trees were cut into 6-foot lengths then split like cordwood. The bottom layer of the wood would be stacked in a crisscrossed pattern to alw for good airflow. The sides would be stacked like a teepee. A fire would be built inside the wood teepee on top of the crisscrossed floor. Dirt would be put on the fire to make sure it burned slowly. The fire would have to be watched continuously to keep it from becoming too hot and burning up the wood. After 72 hours of slow burning, the end product would be coke, or charcoal, which was then packed into burlap bags, shipped to Galveston, and sold for 30 cents a bag. It was used in stoves for heating. It was reported ear year there were over 22,000 bags of charcoal shipped out of Turtle Bayou on the charcoal boats.
