The earliest ancestor that I have for the Barnhills of Henry/Shelby/Daviess counties, KY is Robert Gabriel Barnhill (b. ca 1626) in Scotland. His son, John Barnhill, came to America from Ireland, and supposedly was the first Barnhill immigrant to come to this country. Apparently, he had to leave Ireland after publishing some articles on his printing press that were not favorably received by the King. This John Barnhill settled in PA, and some of his descendants (your ancestors), found their way to Orange County, NC. Indeed, some of the Boones also moved from PA to Orange/Guilford county, NC before relocating to KY. Most likely, the families were acquainted before moving to KY.

The John (Johne) Barnhill mentioned here is my ancestor. Johne came to america about 1695. He landed at Baltimore, lived in Delaware for a while, then moved to Virginia. From there in migrated to Pitt Co. NC. About 1800 part of the family moved to New Hanover Co. NC. The part of New Hanover Co. they lived in is now Pender County.
The Barnhills of Pa. were his Nephews.
At least that's what the info I have claims.
You can find Johne and his sons listed in the Pitt county tax rolls of 1762.
Johne's son David married a Margaret Fleming. David and Margaret had a son named John who had a son named Alexander. Alexander was born about 1794. This is my line.

Robert Gabriell Barnhill was Christioned January 4th, 1627 at Glascow, Scotland. It is presently assumed he was about a week to 10 days old at the time of his Christioning. Regarding two of Robert Gabriell's sons: David Lee Barnhill, genealosist, writes his belief to me, "That John Barnhill and his brother, Samuel, had gone to Ireland with William of Orange in the battle against the English Catholic King James I. That they had remained in Ireland, with their families remaining in Scotland because they lacked the funds to return home. " He goes on to state, "That after the defeat of King James I and William began his reign with his wife, as William and Mary, who oddly enough was the daughter of King James II , they designated large portions of land taken from the Catholics to Scottish Protestants, whereby John and Samuel brought their families to what is now Northern Ireland". NOTE: in researching Robert Gabriell, you may also find him referred to as "Gabriel". The logical conclusion to this is that those who knew him called him Gabriel. There is no documentation confirming the parentage of Robert. My assumption is that this is the only family that continued to partake of the ordinances of the Catholic Church of Glascow. - Researched 1998 by Stan Barnhill - Midland, Texas
