  1. 8.  George Washington* Shelton, (son??) was born about 1780 in Virginia (or England?) (son of (..)* Shelton, (Scot descent) and Miss (..)* Wilson (?), (Welsh descent), son of Thomas Shelton, Jr. and Catherine Mundy); died after 1830 in of, Maury Co, Tennessee, or Texas.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Census: 1830, Maury Co, Tennessee

    Notes:

"Annie Payne Shelton settled in Murry Co, Tenn. Shelton is Scotch. Payne is Irish and Wilson Welch. I presume that is the Great Grand parents. Grandfather Shelton settled in Tenn. had born to them 8 children in all they were all reared in at state. Two of the daughters married and remained there. Aunt Kiziah and Aunt Polly. My Grandmother Susan came to Texas with the family also Uncle Washington. Father of Tom, Amos, George, and others. Uncle Amos your father. Aunt Maria Carraway, aunt Tibitha Jones mother of Barton, Lura, Annie and Irene. Aunt Martha who married a Wallis reared 3 sons. Dan, Frank, and Robert. Then a Mr. Hartwell reared 2 sons and one daughter. Will, Albert, Roxie.
"The Sheltons first settled in San Augustine lived there about 3 years moved to Nacogdoches. Was there at the time of the Battle of San Jacinto, remained there 3 or 4 years and moved to Chambers Co. All but my Granmother first married a John Kirk. He was killed at the Battle of San Jacinto. She was left with 2 babies one just an infant, died at 2 or 3 months of age. Kirk was Aunt Mary Sherman's father.
"Aunt Mariah Carraway and her husband settled at Neches. Reared 2 sons and one daughter. Jeff is the only name I know. He died and she married a Mr. Nelson, they reared 8 boys and 2 girls but I don't know but 2 names among them. Dwight wan Houston two years ago. Cousin Robert Willis told the other name. Clinton a Doctor. That was in 1910. Cousin Robert told me if I could get in touch with you I could add something to what he told me, and also referred me to Uncle Washington's older daughter Mrs. C.F. Jones who he said lived near Stephenville, Erath, Co. But he could not give her rural no. so I never did write to her. He said she was older than he so I don't suppose there is any use trying now. I have Cousin Roberts old letter here by me copying what I can from it. And I did the same for him. He has forgotten all he wrote to me. He also referred me to Irene Fulks, but she is another one I never did get in touch with as well as your own dear self. So now dear, I hope you get something out of this anyway. Now I am going to take a clear sheet of paper and write your Father's war record on a clean page.
    "So bye."

    hello out there.

Is anyone searching for JOHN SHELTON THE TAILOR, born in King William Co. Va., who lived in Richmond Va, and Knox Co TN for a while, finally setling down in Maury Co. TN.? He died in 1835. I know he had parents and siblings and cousins.
    Is anyone looking for him?

His wife was Elizabeth, (last name unknown.)

    Sincerely, Alex Ko

It's been quite a few years since I've posted a query for this line, so hopefully somebody is out there now who knows the previous generation for them. There seem to be a lot of GW Sheltons and even Shelton/Payne marriages. I'm looking for the ones who setted in Chambers Co, TX 1840-41. My line extends thru their dau Susan Shelton and her 1st husb, John Kirk.
    Thanks
    Sherry

I'm still looking for this family; however I have just made a connection with these Sheltons in Chambers county, TX with the Sheltons in Tennessee Colony, Anderson county, Texas, connected with the Faires/Farris family, though at present not all the questions are answered. if you're interested in this family, contact me. My email addresses associated with this thread are no longer active. I can be reached at lumoto@aol.com or lumoto1@gmail.com

    Birth:
although 1850 census shows his b.d. as 1805, that is not reasonable age considering his children. So, adjusting, considering the date of age range in the 1830 census record.

    Sherry,

Am pasting in some patches of Payne-Shelton connections from my file. The ones I know about seem to have mostly stayed put in Pittsylvania Co., VA, but bunches of their cousins headed west to NC & TN in the late 1700's &
early 1800's. As you can probably see, my family tree didn't branch much at that time. Sort of like your Sheltons & Shermans. I have seen a tendency of my Sheltons to pick another clan and just keep marrying them. Wonder if it's genetic? (My sister married my wife's brother, so we were just carrying on an old family tradition.) Wish I had more on the male Paynes
descendents of my ancestor Paynes; I would almost bet one of them was your Annie's father. The Pittsylvania Sheltons were a prolific bunch. The brothers born from 1707 to 1729 included John, Thomas, Ralph, Benjamin,
James, Crispen, & Daniel; I really don't have much on the descendents except from Ralph, Crispen, & Daniel, and not all of those.

    Some other comments:
    1) You list one son of George & Annie as 'Washington'; was he really George Washington Shelton Jr., & just called Washington to avoid confusion with the father? (I am Glenmore Lorraine III, and my grandfather was called
Glenmore, my father was called Lorraine (rough on a kid, huh?), and I was called Shell)
    2) I saw reference to another marriage in Maury Co., TN in 1817- between a William Shelton (there are thousands of those!!) and a Martha Pain. Wonder if she was really a Payne.
    3) Notes that Stephen Shelton is on 1820 Census for Giles Co, TN. A Stephen Shelton is on the 1805 Grainger Co, TN tax list, 1811 Maury Co, TN tax list, and 1819 Giles Co, TN tax list. He does not state that all these
are the same Stephen, simply that they may or may not be.
    4) County Records:
23 April 1813. Alfred Blach of Davidson Co TN conveys lot no. 27 in the town of
Columbia to JOHN SHELTON of Maury Co TN (215)
Surveyed for WILLIAM SHELTON, p 341.
    5) from EmmaLBob: John Shelton of Maury Co TN was b. ca 1768 in King
William Co VA - died 24 June
1835 in Columbia, Maury Co TN. His wf Elizabeth____ Shelton b. 16 Nov 1779,

John Shelton made his will 16 May 1835 and named his wf as executrix and
willed her the slave Maria and her child Sarah. His seven children were
named in the will. Maury Co TN Will Bill C:268-269.

The above fr: Shelton Roots Through TN by Frank Harvey Shelton, c.1979
There is addition info on son James R. Shelton who removed to TX 1837.
These two items (#4 & #5) seem to suggest a King William Co., VA origin for
at least one batch of Maury Co., TN Sheltons, but I don't see any of your
    names in this batch.
    6) There was a marriage bond in Pittsylvania Co., VA for John Shelton to
marry Anne Payne on 5/28/1804. Abal Wilson is listed as guardian, but I
don't know for which one. Wonder if this is a connection to your Wilsons
    line?
    7) From the ZF Shelton book: 4. John Payne Shelton, "Inherited Red House",
md Massie (Shelton) (d/o Major Thomas Shelton of Louisa Co., VA.), four
    children.
    8) more from ZF Shelton: 6. John Shelton, 3rd owner of "Red House", d.
    1828, md. Mary (Payne).
    9) In your 'family letter' reference is made to "Cousin Robert Willis". Is
that really Willis (not Wallis)? If so, perhaps there is another
Pittsylvania link- the Willis name appears at least twice in my files, once
as the middle name of John Shelton and again as the surname of my g-whatever
    aunt Mary Yeatts.
Children of John Shelton and Mary Payne are:
    i. Lettice Shelton, married (1) Abraham Shelton
    December 17, 1792198; married (2) Robert Haymes November 16, 1807.
    Notes for Abraham Shelton:
Hugh & Ida Taylor's book, 'Some Early
Settlers; Lincoln County, Tennessee', attributes a daughter Lettye Shelton
to this Abraham and Lettice. Lettye married an Archibald Cashion.
    More About Abraham Shelton:
Fact 1: November 16, 1807, may have married
    Robert Haymes (per Millie (GeneSeek@usa.net))
ii. Nancy Shelton, married William White January
    13, 1795199.
    iii. Charlotte Shelton, married John
Willis Shelton , Sr. Bef. 1785200.

Children of Stephen Yeatts and Lydia Parsons are:
    i. Mary Molly Yeatts, born in Pittsylvania Co., VA;
married Thomas Willis August 18, 1789 in Pittsylvania Co., VA141.

Hope some of this helps eventually.

    Hi Sherry,
Sorry about taking so long to get back with you. Could not find Annie Payne; am sending you what I have and hope something in it will help.
    Jan
    Ancestors of Thomas Payne
    Generation No. 1
    1. Thomas Payne, born 1755; died December 1819 in Pittsylvania Co., VA.
He married (1) Francis Shelton. She was the daughter of John Shelton II and Mary Payne. He married (2) Sally Shelton October 15, 1795 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. She was the daughter of Daniel Shelton and Lettice
    (Lettie) Young.

    Notes for Thomas Payne:
PAYNE Thomas SHELTON, Sally 15 Oct 1795

from book 'An Intimate History of The
American Revolution in Pittsylvania County' by Frances Hallam Hurt dated 1976. Paynes listed:Abraham, Alexander Spottswood, Dolley, Greenwood, John,
John Jr., John Sr., John Robert Dandridge, Josias, Luther, Millicent, Neil G., Philemon, Reuben, Robert, Thomas, Wiliam. A family of broad involvement during the Revolution and of broad involvement now is that of the Paynes.

John Payne, Sr., was elected to the Committee of Safety in 1775, having been in the county since 1767 when he, his son John,Jr., and Greenwood Payne were listed as first tithables. It was apparently his son John who was appointed ensign in the militia. His great-nephews (grandsons of his brother, Colonel John Payne) Alexander Spottswood Payne and John Robert Dandridge Payne, are the subjects of one of the Virginia Museum's most attractive early paintings-two young boys with their mammy.

John Payne, Sr., is of special interest as the father of the enchanting Dolley Payne who married President James Madison. She was the widow of John Todd. The Pittsylvania Payne was the son of Josias Payne of Licking Hole
Creek in Goochland County, which both Josias and his brother John represented in the House of Burgesses. Josias apparently came to Pittsylvania in his later years to live with his son John, for he died there. His will was recorded in 1785. John, the Safety Committee
member, married Mary Coles of Coles' Hill of Hanover County, and they were the parents of Dolley who apparently grew up in Hanover.

Another family of Paynes was equally prominent-that of Reuben, William, and Philemon. They owned large grants of land in Pittsylvania before it was Pittsylvania, moving here from Essex County. They were the sons of Thomas
    Payne.

Other early Paynes were Robert and Abraham. Reuben was named justice when the county assumed its present size in 1777 and a lieutenant in the county militia when it was gearing for war. He served as a vestryman of Camden
Parish until 1779 when he resigned, refusing to pay taxes through the Church of England. Philemon was appointed deputy surveyor in 1767, and William went to war.

The following story is told by Major (Ret.) Neil G. Payne-one of the few traditional family stories of the Revolution.

    The Grapevine
I am alive and well today due largely to a grapevine which was growing in New York State in 1775.

The vine probably was already growing when William Payne, together with his brothers Reuben and Philemon, moved into Pittsylvania County and settled on Cherrystone Creek, the headwaters of Banister River.

William, my great-great-great grandfather, married Miss Sarah Nance and had begun the satisfying life of managing his large plantation north of Chatham. But this idyllic life was not destined to continue after the rumblings of war drifted souh from Lexington and Concord.

Taking with him his trusted slave Tom, William Payne rode north at the head of a company of fellow Pittsylvanians to join General Washington's Army. He served as captain throughout the war without pay, furnishing his own clothing and much of hs food.

As often as possible, Tom was sent home bearing notes from area soldiers.Tradition has it that Tom was instrumental in writing some of the letters, since his mistress had taught him to read and write before he left
with Captain Payne. Many early settlers lacked schooling in these arts.

On the return trip Tom made his way north over miles of unmarked roads and trails, burdened with as many letters, clothes, and bits of food as he could shoulder.

Captain Payne normally would direct the fire and movement of his small company of volunteers during skirmishes with the British, but on one occasion he was so intent on heaping destruction upon the garishly dressed British soldiers that he did ot hear a general call for retreat.

Will Payne had wheeled about and was running to rejoin his countrymen when his foot caught under a grapevine and he sprawled headlong into the dust.

At exactly this moment an enemy soldier pulled the trigger of his musket and the ball, aimed dead center at the back of the retreating captain, buried itself in a tree. Will regained his feet and ran.

When the war was over Payne and his company returned to their homes. Many British soldiers chose to remain in America, too, so history states.

Years later one such soldier visited the home of Will Payne, and host and guest recounted their wartime experiences. To their amazement it was learned that the visiting ex-Britisher was the soldier who had missed his
target when the rebel captain fell over a grapevine.

Payne family historians write of the close friendship which developed between the two men who, earlier, had sought to destroy each other.

    Jan,
The John Shelton I have married to Mary Payne is John born c. 1745, the son of John born 1722. It was John the father who was married to an Elizabeth. These references I have attributed to April Miller's book, Shelton County, and
I have not yet found anything particularly convincing to say she was in error on this. April discussed the existence of Johns Sr. & Jr. and that they were
frequently confused with each other. (Hard to believe anyone could ever confuse these Johns, Abrahams, & Lettices, :>) I have also received some corroberating e-mails from Kitty Richards, and from this list (Knights5). I think it was a post of Anne McElroy that listed Mary (d/o George) Payne as wife of John Shelton.John (Jr.) had a son Abraham, who married Peggy Gibson, and a daughter Lettice, who married Abraham Shelton the son of Gabriel, in
1792,and a daughter Frances, who married Thomas Payne. Frances & Thomas then had a daughter Fannie who married Tunstal Shelton (son of Daniel the brother of John
the father). I descend from Tunstal & Fannie, and thus from two sons of Old Ralph (John Sr. & Daniel). I still cannot tell if Thomas Payne (son-in-law of John Jr.) and Mary Payne (wife of John Jr.) were related, but I bet they were, somehow.
I am not highly confident I have all this correct, but I think at least the dates and relationships are 'possible', i.e. parents not born after children etc., and generations seem of 'normal' length.
I'll look for more on this later, and send if I find anything.

Ralph (John Sr.

    ___
James Taylor White, who settled at Turtle Bayou near Anahuac in 1818, was the first significant cattleman along the upper Texas coast.15 An early, anonymous writer credited White?s herd as numbering 3,000 head in 1831,16 whereas another writer quoted the herd?s size at 10,000 head in 1840. This writer claimed that when White died in 1851, he had $150,000 banked in New Orleans, the proceeds of his cattle sales there.17

    Handbook of Texas
WHITE, JAMES TAYLOR (1789-1852). James Taylor White (known as Taylor White), cattleman and rancher, son of John and Sarah (Gambel) White, was born on July 28, 1789, in Louisiana. During the 1780s his family probably moved to Louisiana from the Carolinas, where his grandfather had received a land grant in 1757. Taylor White married Sarah Cade, daughter of James and Polly (Nichols) Cade, on January 26, 1813, at St. Martin of Tours Church in St. Martinville, Louisiana.

In 1828 White drove his small herd of Spanish, or longhorn, cattle along the old Opelousas Road to Texas; he settled near Turtle Bayou. His cattle grazed on land bordered on the west by Galveston Bay and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico. The Turtle Bayou Resolutions were signed near his home. By 1840 White had acquired 4,605 acres of land in Liberty (now Chambers) County and paid taxes on 1,775 head of cattle and forty-five horses.

During the late 1830s or early 1840s, White began driving cattle to New Orleans. He deposited money from the sales of these cattle at banks in New Orleans and eventually put much of it back into the business of raising cattle. He attributed his success to his hard work and single-mindedness. He was also known to be innovative in his techniques. For example, he burned the land periodically to make way for new grass for his animals, a practice unheard of in his time.

White came to be known as the Cattle King of Southeast Texas. Two cattle brands, the JTW and the Crossed W, have been associated with White's Texas ranching operation. The Crossed W was reportedly willed to White by his father, also a cattleman, who died in 1806. Some sources claim that as of the late 1930s, both were among the oldest continuously used cattle brands in the state.

James Taylor White and his wife had seven children. He died, probably of cholera, in March 1852 at his home. In a nearby family plot he is buried with his wife, who died nine days later.
