Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Tilman Helms was born in 1716 in Glocester Co, New Jersey (son of John Isaac Helms and Anne Tillman (Tilghman)); died in 1800 in Mecklenburg Co, North Carolina.

    Notes:

He worked as a Planter, Chainer.

? Parents of Tilman, and how he came to NC is unknown. Tilman (Tilgman) Helms might have been born about 1725 in Chester Co., PA, later located by boundry change in Delaware. The Helms brothers first settled on land NE of the Great Pee Dee river, along Little River at Buffalo Creek. Deeds show Tilman living East of the Pee-Dee River as late as 1762. Tilman was a planter and a chainer, as witness his signature on several deeds as chainer. In April 1770, Tilman was granted a 300 acre plantation west of the Pee-Dee, on Jones Creek at the mouth of Rocky Fork. So I would say it was about that time that Tilman and George began to establish the community of Helmsville, which is today called Monroe. George and Tilman donated land for a church and cemetary, and helped to build the High Hill Primative Baptist Church. Tilman is said to have married Rachel Craig, but I haven't been able to prove or disprove it. (from the manuscript of Sara Myers).

? He owned property on 27 Nov 1762 in Anson County, North Carolina, United States. Tilman Helms granted 150 acres in Anson Co, E side of Little River, S side of Buffalo, adj George Helms. (Land Patent Book 15, p464)

? He appeared on the census in 1790 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. 1790 Census lists several Hellums in Mecklenburg County, District 16 (Charlotte area), including Tilmon (1male over 16, 2 males under 16, 2 females).

? Born 1716, d ca 1800, m Rachel Craig in 1744 possibly in Gloucester Co, NJ (citing Ernest Broome of Monroe NC, Sallie Pressley of Charlotte NC, Mrs L G Marsh of Monroe NC, Sara Myers of Cassapolis MI, and Conrad Raymond Helms records of 1962).

? Children names listed (citing Ernest Broome of Monroe NC, Sallie Pressley of Charlotte NC, Sara Myers of Cassapolis MI, Conrad Raymond Helms records of 1962, and Census records 1790-1840).

? Tilman Helms married Rachel Craige, supposedly the daughter of Moses Craige. Tilman and Rachel married in New Jersey about 1740. (Posted by Warren Guy Helms on Genforum on February 03, 1999)
