Less detail
Generation: 1

  1. 1.  George Huff was born in 1842 in Tennessee (son of Nathan H. "Tosh" Huff, Sr. and Mary Ann "Polly" Jones); died after 1870 in of, Jackson Co, Tennessee.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Nathan H. "Tosh" Huff, Sr. was born about 1822 in Jackson Co, Tennessee; died about 1898 in Jackson Co, Tennessee.

Nathan married Mary Ann "Polly" Jones about 1865 in Jackson Co, Tennessee, and was divorced before 1873 in Jackson Co, Tennessee. Mary (daughter of Elias Jones and Parthena "Polly" Ellis) was born on 28 Feb 1834 in Jackson Co, Tennessee; died on 28 Dec 1909 in Flynns Lick, Jackson Co, Tennessee; was buried in New Salem Cem, Jackson Co, Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mary Ann "Polly" Jones was born on 28 Feb 1834 in Jackson Co, Tennessee (daughter of Elias Jones and Parthena "Polly" Ellis); died on 28 Dec 1909 in Flynns Lick, Jackson Co, Tennessee; was buried in New Salem Cem, Jackson Co, Tennessee.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Residence: Bef 1873, Crittenden Co, Kentucky

    Notes:

NOTES: She was 17 in 1850 married in the census year to Labon Loftis.

NOTES: I could not find her and Labon in 1860 Jackson County, Tennessee. I also could not find her or any of her children in 1860.

NOTES: What is Polly's story, when did Labon die or leave? In about 1864 or 1865 she up and marry's Nathan H. Huff. Who according to his own descendants was the meanest man in Tennessee. She had at least 4 children with him and when her baby daughter Elvira Huff was tiny she left Nathan and took Elvira and her 2 Loftis daughters Susan & Mary and went to Kentucky in about 1872. When did she go back to Tennessee? Did she stay in Kentucky until after Nathan Huff died in 1898? She was buried at New Salem Cemetery in 1909 in Jackson county, Tennessee. Polly was the mother of at least 9 children.

NOTES: Received an email 6 January 2002, from Jodie Bowman Chinoy and she has found a divorce decree between Nathan Huff and Mary Huff his wife which was first filed on 3 June 1867 and was mentioned again as Nathan not having paid for the court cost for this divorce on 11 January 1869. If the divorce really happened in 1867 and the court is still trying to get payment for court cost in 1869, why is Mary (Polly) still with Nathan in 1870? Also Mary (Polly ) has 3 more children with Nathan, Nathan Jr. in 1867, Samuel H. in June of 1869 and her last child Elvira Elizabeth in February of 1871 and sometime shortly after that and before February 1873 she has left Tennessee and had gone to Crittenden County,Kentucky.

    Buried:
I found out she died in Jackson County, Tennessee and was buried at the New Salem Cemetery. Go north towards Gainesboro you will come to Flynn's Lick just as you pass the little store there is a road to your right that is the New Salem Road go down that road about 4 miles are so you will go past the sign that says Jones/Huff Cemetery go about 1 more mile and on your right setting on a hill is the New Salem Cemetery. She is buried in the middle of the cemetery towards the back, next to the trees by her daughter-in-law Filena Loftis and some of her Loftis grandchildren. There are a whole bunch of Jone's buried there also, her brothers and their families. Her marker says Polley Ann Loftis mother of J. M. Loftis. A tender mother and a faithful friend. With her birth and death dates also. I took a picture of the marker on Sunday 17 October 1999 at about 9:30 am. Also pictures of quite a few other markers. It was really great to be able to find her and so many others of my family.

    Notes:

HISTORY: from ELLIS FAMILY HISTORY compiled by Dorman Hayes - 58045 Benham Avenue, Elkhart, IN 46517 -- dormh@michiana.org Some time about 1815 he moved the family to Jackson County, Tennessee the part that is now Putnam County and settled on Cane Creek near Cookeville. Leslie Phy Ellis (a family Historian stated in his notes that Elijah was listed in the 1790 Census. The only county with an Elijah was Johnson County. It seems he and a John Ellis left Johnson to live in Orange County, North Carolina near Joseph (known to have come from Maryland) or Nimrod (thought to have come from Maryland). It seems probable that Elijah and John could have been sons of Nimrod. Nimrod died about 1810 leaving no will. A list of his children is not available, but census records indicate he fathered at least 4 sons, one probably was the Stephen who administered his Estate. Also John a purchaser at the Estate sale. Elijah is not found in the available estate papers, but these are believed to be incomplete. The 1800 census for Orange County shows Elijah with 2 females under 10 indicating there were two daughters that we know nothing about. Edgar Ellis found in the Johnson County Marriage records that an Elijah Ellis married a Patience Collins on 20 July 1792. This might be our Elijah and would account for the 2 daughters.
