Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Oliver Perry Mahaney (Mahonay) was born on 5 May 1801 in Charleston, Charleston Co, South Carolina; died on 3 Sep 1846 in Gainesboro, Jackson Co, Tennessee.

    Notes:

Son of Benjamin Mahaney and Clarisa Lynch. Most records show the spelling of Mahanay as ey. And those who stayed in Tennessee spelled it ey. I feel it was changed to ay when the family had a split in Tennessee after the death of Oliver Perry Mahanay. Legal records show that O.P.'s family lost the land they had been leasing after his death. At that time Oliver Perry's widow, Elizabeth and her 10 children, some grown men with families went to Gasconade Co. Missouri. Stories state that Elizabeth's sister Sarah (Sally) who also married a Mahanay was already in Missouri, and encouraged her sister who was newly widowed to come to Missouri. The families later moved on to Johnson County Texas. There were latterly hundreds of the Mahanay lines in this county all spelled it MAHANAY.

A History of Putnam Co (McClain) p. 15...Job Morgan came from NC about 1801 and settled on Spring Creek, then in the newly formed county of Jackson. He was the grandfather of the late Gen. George H. Morgan, prominent in Putnam Co affairs.

In 1805, Sally and Job were members of the Baptist Church at Spring Creek.

Family records show that Job brought a book with him to TN, with his name and a date inscribed, Job Morgan, Aug 3rd, 1802. It is assumed that he came to TN but not before the 1802 date. They were for sure in Jackson Co as early as 1805, according to the minutes of the Roaring River Baptist Church under date of First Saturday in Jan 1806, we read, "Received by letter Job Morgan and his wife.." The family stopped first on the Duck River, secured land and established a home, but after a time they moved on to Spring Creek, a tributary of Roaring River.
