Corporal. 3rd South Carolina Regiment. Revolutionary War. Patriot.
Henry was a lifelong resident of Orangeburg District SC. He was born in Orangeburg to Charles and Ann Tshudy Hutto 26 May 1753 and married Ann Zorn on approx. 5 Jan 1780. They had 10 children, Henry Jr, William, Nancy Ann, Jacob H, John, Issac, Charles, Nicholas, Mary "Polly" and Rebecca. Henry was a prosperous planter and slave owner. He died rather wealthy for the time with his estate being valued at around $9000 including 16 slaves. Upon Henry's death in 1817 his beloved wife Ann was named Executrix and his son William, Executor. Henry's oldest son Henry, Jr had preceded his father in death. With Ann's death in 1831, the estate was divided in 10 parts for his heirs.
Henry was an almost exact contemporary of a 1st cousin of the same name, hence there has been some doubt as to which individual was which in later life.(per Dr Agricola) As far as the war records of the 2 Henry's, I feel that they were combined. With no SSN to separate the two it is impossible to distinguish Henry Hutto from Henry Hutto. Henry, the son of Peter, brother to Charles was born in 1752 and Henry, the son of Charles in 1753. But we do know that the Henry of this memorial was married to Ann Zorn and died in 1817. We have documentation of his children's names and there is no Peter named after his father only Charles named after his father. And in tracing later generations of this line we find the name Charles repeated but never a Peter.
At the University of Alabama in the special collections library is a book by Edward K Austin named A grain of mustard seed...the tree of the Hutto family. In this book Mr. Austin mentions that in the yard of the old Winton Courthouse stands a monument erected to those from the county who fought in the Revolution and the War of 1812, Henry Hutto's name is on this list. In part it reads, "Henry Hutto, Corporal 3rd SC Regt 1752-1817". In 1786 Winton Co was formed out of Orangeburg District and Henry's farm was cut into this new county. Two years later Winton Co was renamed Barnwell Co. The section in which Henry lived is now called Bamberg Co.
One Henry Hutto was granted a Revolutionary Soldiers bounty of 200 acres of land in Barnwell Co in 1787, another Henry Hutto 160 acres in Orangeburgh District in 1787. Other records show a Henry Hutto was granted 500 acres on Willow Swamp in 1790 and 1000 acres on the Little Salkehatchie River in 1802 where many Zorns in laws were living.
